After a week delay, four Republican lawmakers have formally asked the House sergeant at arms to investigate whether a Muslim advocacy group placed interns in national security committees, a spokesperson for the sergeant at arms confirmed to TPMmuckraker this afternoon.

Spokesperson Kerri Hanley would only say that a letter requesting a probe of the Council on American Islamic Relations was received today and that it is under review.

The letter, which you can read in full here, claims that CAIR is tied to "HAMAS" and cites the new WND-published book Muslim Mafia, written by a man who has labeled President Obama "Muslim":

Muslim Mafia raises claims that CAIR, who the FBI says has a relationship with HAMAS, has made it a strategic goal to influence Members of Congress on the Judiciary, Intelligence and Homeland Security Committees.

Politico described the document that is the basis for that claim as "basically [laying] out a fairly straight forward public relations and lobbying strategy."

The letter, signed by Reps. Paul Broun (R-GA), John Shadegg (R-AZ), Sue Myrick (R-NC), and Trent Franks (R-AZ), continues:

The book states they have created an internal electronic mailing list, called "Policy-net" to influence policy. It also states that associates of CAIR lobbied Member of Congress in order to weaken the Patriot Act and other critical law-enforcement tools used to protect America's national security.

The lawmakers charged at a press conference last week that Muslim "intern spies" from CAIR may have infiltrated national security committees on the Hill.

"They did what they said they were going to do," CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper told TPMmuckraker, saying the group had no plans to reach out to the sergeant at arms. "I think the sergeant at arms will take it as seriously as other reasonable people do and file it under bizarre political stunts," he said.

The Republicans also sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, requesting that the DOJ brief each member of Congress on why CAIR was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation case. The group was in a controversial list of co-conspirators in case, which involved funding of Hamas.

The office of Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Several Democrats have denounced what one called a "slander against democracy and religious freedom."

Uh oh. They've got a list. You know how Republicans get when they get their hands on a list.

Well, gosh, so many questions, let me answer them in order.

1. There's a difference between having a public dispute with actual political enemies who've done nothing but try to kneecap you since before you were inauguarated and making up a secret list of enemies and illegally breaking into their offices and homes and the offices of their shinks (God knows Beck needs one), ordering the IRS to comb through their tax returns (illegal now thanks to the trickster), and ordering the FBI and the Justice Department to harass them.

2. He does. He keeps reaching out, and you and your friends keep spitting at him.

3. You're an idiot troll.

4. You're an idiot troll.

Any other questions?

And, actually, the list I was referring to was Joe McCarthy's famous fake list of "communists" he claimed were in the State Department you home schooled ignoramus.

In a related item, one of President Obama's Muslim appointees to his Council on Faith-Based Partnerships, Egyptian-born Dalia Mogahed, defended her recent statement supporting Sharia law for women...here's the link to the article, complete with a video of the program:

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/god-and-country/2009/10/22/exclusive-white-house-faith-adviser-defends-sharia-remarks.html#read_

You have to wonder where the feminists are on this issue...Sharia law is one of the most oppressive, sexist forms of legal governance in the entire world and yet this spiritual adviser gets a pass for making outrageous statements supporting it!! I'm not sure what is scarier...the possibility that she wasn't properly vetted by the White House or the possibility that she WAS!!

As always, republicans are about projection. They whine about Obama's nonexistent enemies list, simply because they've always had one of their own.

This is insane. I wonder what it's like living in fear of your own shadow. What sad pathetic people conservatives are. I'll say a prayer for them right now.

Did these four pick short straws? It appears that the not so GOP sacrifices a new or a few members per the latest bullshit attack. I'm sure they have some sort of think tank figuring out which ones will take the least hit in their districts before throwing them to the lions. I mean, I'm giving them the benefit of doubt, they've got to think things through a little, don't they?

If these people had any brains, they'd be dangerous. They should b asking why CAIR hasn't filed a 990 since 2006. My guess is that CAIR probably doesn't want to reveal its precarious financial condition.

To encourage donors, CAIR changed its tax status from 501(c)(4) to 501(c)(3)some time after 2006. Contributions to CAIR are now deductible but there are limits on how much lobbying CAIR can do.

That document is wishful thinking on CAIR's part. From everything I read, CAIR is disorganized. The 990s have a number of adjustments in the financials.

The CAIR annual dinner is Saturday night and Jesse Jackson is the featured speaker. The cost of the dinner is only $65 so I don't think this is exactly the event of the Muslim social season.

I'm sure Chris Gaubatz stole a lot of info about CAIR's finances but I think the people that Gaubatz works for chose not to reveal it because it is not in their best interest for CAIR to be portrayed as it really is.

Perhaps the failure to file a 990 since 2006 is because CAIR is trying to conceal a further decline in membership, such as the 90+% decline the group experienced from 2001 to 2006 according to IRS documents obtained by the Washington Times, which showed CAIR membership dropping from 29,000 to less than 1,700.

Why is no one addressing the response of moderate, freedom-loving Muslim organizations to the FBI's severing of official relations with CAIR after it was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-funding case?

Here is a statement released by the Center for Islamic Pluralism commending the FBI for its decision to sever official relations with CAIR:

The Center for Islamic Pluralism also notably supported the freedom movement during the bogus Iranian elections earlier this year, where anti-Ahmedinejad demonstrators were beaten and even killed:

Gee, could it be that Center For Islamic Pluralism appears to be a one-man show put on by Stephen Schwartz? In 2008, the center took in a grand total of $120k.

Your willingness to dismiss the contributions of Supna Zaidi, Zuhdi Jasser, Khalim Massoud, Kiran Sayyed, Ahmed Mansour and Nawab Mousvi in this statement only demonstrates how little you know about their independent Muslim organizations and the PLURALISM that their involvement assures!!

And while you scoff at the Canter's ability to function on a relatively small budget, rational thinkers will see that as FAR less of an indictment than having your membership ranks plummet 90+% in 5 years, like CAIR's has or CAIR's subsequent reliance on SAUDI-ARABIAN FUNDING, which now provides the BULK of their income!! And the last time I checked, the Center doesn't have the albatross necklace of being an unindicted co-conspirator in a terror-funding case, as CAIR was in the 2007 Holy Land Foundation terror-funding case, in which HLF was eventually proven guilty...
