Sen. Frank Lautenberg is calling for a federal investigation into whether former U.S. attorney Chris Christie used his office for political gain, reports the AP.

The New York Times reported this morning that a close Christie aide and friend in the office took several steps that benefited Christie's campaign for governor, after receiving a $46,000 loan from him. We took a broader look at the case that Christie may have improperly politicized the U.S. attorney's office here.

According to the AP, Lautenberg, a New Jersey Democrat, "called it 'shocking' that Christie appears to have conducted a political campaign from the U.S. Attorney's Office."

Of course, Lautenberg's call for a federal probe itself likely has a good degree of political calculation to it. Christie is locked in a tight race with incumbent Democrat Jon Corzine.
But that doesn't make the evidence against Christie any less damning.

Late Update: Here's the full statement from Lautenberg, which specifically refers to Brown:

"It is shocking to learn that a former deputy to Chris Christie was conducting a political campaign within the U.S. Attorney's Office. It was particularly distressing that this raw political agenda came into an office with a historic reputation for fair and unbiased dispensation of justice, and Ms. Brown went so far as to try to bring political campaign objectives into the planning of law enforcement actions. The Department of Justice must initiate an investigation into this matter. Nonetheless, I am confident that with its new leader in place, the U.S. Attorney's office will meet its obligation to enforce the law with integrity and fairness - free from political interference.

I believe it's called Karma...

It's exactly what Christie did to Menendez in '06.

Bravo.

Of course Lautenberg's probe at least has merit given the Drip..Drip...Drip.... about Christie's record.

One thing I learned from all those Gonzo-era hearings, is that the DOJ is not supposed to publicly launch investigations against a candidate so close to an election.

Of course, that doesn't mean I don't applaud Launtenberg asking for one anyway. Gotta love NJ Democrats balls, if only Obama could borrow a pair.

I'm shocked, shocked, I tell you.

Imagine, a Bush appointed US Attorney, vetted by Monica Goodling, uses that US Attorney office for partisan political purposes?

The question remains: "Why is Obama keeping all these Bush US Attorney appointees?"

Why would anyone be surprised? This is New Jersey! Even the rabbis are corrupt, human transplant salespeople.
