Remember how the House sergeant at arms hadn't heard of the call Wednesday by four GOP lawmakers for a probe of alleged infiltration of the Hill by Muslim intern subversives?
It turns out that's because Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC), the de facto leader of the group, who also wrote the foreword for the book on which the charges are based, hasn't yet submitted a request for an investigation, Myrick's office tells TPMmuckraker.
Myrick "will be submitting formal requests to the Department of Justice, the Sergeant at Arms and the Internal Revenue Service in the next few days," spokesperson Taylor Stanford told us.
The office of the sergeant at arms, for its part, seems to be treading lightly on this one. It hasn't returned multiple calls for comment. We're going to keep trying until we get a response.
The DOJ told TPMmuckraker yesterday that it was aware of the request for an investigation, but couldn't comment on whether one had been launched.
Meanwhile, another Democrat is out with a strong statement denouncing the charges of Muslim intern spying as a "slander against democracy and religious freedom."
From Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus:
"At the heart of this issue is whether or not diverse populations are given a fair shot at representing their legitimate political interests in Congress, either as interns, as staff or as Members. The climate in Congress is clearly not as conducive as it should be in encouraging democratic representation, as exemplified by recent fear-rousing antics. As a result of the innumerous obstacles facing Muslim-Americans in this post-9/11 environment, their political participation is stifled and often stymied. More channels for Muslim participation are sorely needed, as well as a friendlier climate that embraces, not discourages, diversity. These fallacious allegations implicate the existence of a society still struggling with anti-Muslim sentiment. My Muslim colleagues in the House of Representatives, along with the highly qualified, patriotic and committed Muslim staffers and interns that have worked with my office and with CAPAC, contribute mightily to our democratic process. Any slander against these fellow patriots is slander against democracy and religious freedom.
Late Update:: Here is Myrick on CNN today asserting that her campaign "has nothing to do with Muslims." It's worth noting that the co-author of the book for which Myrick wrote the foreword has a history of making inflammatory statements about Muslims.

I hope Ms. Myricks isn't a Jew...I'm scared of Jews...and they are trying to "indoctrinate" and infiltrate our government....I hope she is not one of those crazy damned Evangelicals either...they are dangerous, spying on our military..trying to start "holy" wars all over the world...not one of those damned Catholic either, like those corporate lick spittles sitting on the Supreme Court..Scalia, Alito...not a damned Mormon either..they are trying to stop the equality and civil rights of a group who don't live up to their versions of correct and acceptable marriage.....we have entirely to many regressive "do as I say groups" (quite often posing as religious experts) trying to run our "of the people" Government..and I don't agree with any of them....I would have thought we would be further advanced, beyond religious persecution, intolerance and segregation...but "wedge" issues keeps the Corporations in control with their brainwashing propaganda and the unregulated right to rob us at every turn....

As I outlined in a brief comment in another TPM MR post, this anti-CAIR operation appears to be orchestrated by David Yerushalmi, operating through SANE (Society of Americans For National Existence).
Yerushalmi is legal counsel for Frank Gaffney's Center For Security Policy among other things. He is the attorney for the plaintiffs in a racketeering lawsuit filed against CAIR which appears to be supported in part by documents stolen by Chris Gaubatz.
In fact, Gaubatz acted as a process server for Yerushalmi in the CAIR racketeering case, according to documents on the SANE website.
Given World Net Daily's avid interest in smearing CAIR and the apparently well-financed campaign being conducted by Yerushalmi, one wonders where the money is coming from to fund this operation.

Rep. Myrick has a little problem: lobbying while Muslim is not a crime. There is a little thing called the First Amendment which stands in the way of making it one: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

OMG, I just watched the video. "This has nothing to do with Muslims. I work with moderate Muslim groups every day."
I bet she lets Muslims use her bathroom, too.

She works with "moderate Muslim groups every day" the way Sarah Palin reads all the national newspapers and magazines.
First they came for Acorn, now it's CAIR. Move On no doubt is next.

That picture is terrifying. I can't believe that is real. It looks like ET and nancy reagan had a baby.
Also it's amazing how easily people wash over Muslim issues. I hate to think of the human rights violations that will be drummed up in years to come once we are hopefully able to put this era behind us.

Four points on her legislative agenda and Myrick repeated #1 as #2. Plus she can't spell "aide".
The three points she does manage to list are not legislative matters:
(1) Have the Pentagon do a background check on Muslim chaplains in the military who were approved for hire by Abdurahman Alamoudi years ago.
(2) Find out why the DOJ did not hire 90 Jews as Arabic translators in 2001.
(3) Investigate CAIR's tax-exempt status because the "ruler" of Dubai's foundation has pledged $50 million to CAIR.
Myrick's claim to be a terrorism expert is based on her reading twelve (!) books on terrorism, one by World Net Daily terrorism expert, Paul Sperry. Plus she has met 50 raving wingnuts who have a vested financial interest in ginning up the terrorism expert.
