Rep. Sue Myrick (R-NC) is today pressing on in the campaign against supposed infiltration of terrorist-linked Muslim interns in key national security committees on Capitol Hill.

As we told you yesterday, the charges are based on a book published by WorldNetDaily, which draws on the work of an actual intern spy, the son of the co-author who went undercover at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

An animated Myrick complained on Fox News this morning that "quite frankly, [CAIR makes] everybody else look like they're being paranoid by saying anything about them."

Here's the video of the Myrick segment:

Here's the "internal memo" the host referred to. Not mentioned on the Fox segment was how the memo was obtained: Chris Gaubatz, the son of book co-author Dave Gaubatz (more on him later), grew a beard and posed as a Muslim student college student to infiltrate CAIR as an intern.

CAIR argues the charges are ridiculous, saying it merely does ordinary advocacy work on the Hill, like any other interest group. And it has filed a police report for theft of proprietary documents, a spokesman told TPMmuckraker yesterday.

So who's going to investigate the activities of these alleged Manchurian interns? At a press conference yesterday, four Republican representatives called on, by our count, three separate authorities to take action.

The House sergeant at arms, whose spokesperson is out today, told The Hill Wednesday: "We have not received any request at this time."

The lawmakers want the sergeant at arms to investigate whether "CAIR was successful in placing interns" on any national security committees. It's not clear what action they want to be taken if that turns out to be accurate.

The lawmakers also called on the IRS to probe CAIR's non-profit status. We've put in a call to the IRS, but a spokesman seemed not to have heard of the matter, and said he would get back to us.

Finally, Reps. John Shadegg (R-AZ) and Paul Broun (R-GA) called on the Justice Department to look into CAIR's activities generally. And the whole group of lawmakers wants the DOJ to brief each member of Congress and his or her chief of staff on why CAIR was named in a lengthy, controversial list of unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation case, involving funding of Hamas.

The DOJ did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter.

Late Update: Dean Boyd, spokesman for the DOJ's national security division, sends this statement along:

We are aware of the requests that you reference from members of Congress. As a matter of policy however, the Justice Department generally does not comment on whether or not a particular person or entity is under investigation or may come under investigation.

Once again, right-wingers only ever appear to be aware of the concept of scrutinizing power bases so as to discern their central motives when it comes to isolated entities with which they have little economic relationship. Corrupt defense contractors? Meh. Lax tax enforcement on the rich and corporations? Bah. ACORN? Let's get 'em!

What is the difference between what CAIR is doing for Muslims and what AIPAC has been doing for Jews for years?

They're elbowing in on AIPACs territory.

The difference? AIPAC is an outfit that lobbies for the subordination of American interests to those of a foreign state. CAIR is lobbying for Islamic Americans.

The right wing are now entering an extraordinarily frightening time, and we as people who understand that one of the most important aspects of education, is that we learn from our mistakes, and respect that in the future if we recognize a similar pattern, that we change course.. value in education as a way to empower the public - especially in a Democracy, it is our responsibility to shout, whisper, use telepathy, hand sign, use smoke signals - whatever works - from the rooftops: THE WORLD HAS SEEN THIS BEFORE.

What the republicans and World Net Daily are doing is nothing more than racism & xenophobia.
In the minds of the vast majority of right wingers, thanks to propaganda efforts via Fox news and other places(originating at the Cheney White House), being Muslim means being a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer.
The right wing really do see ALL Muslims as the enemy.
And their belief in a Muslim conspiracy to take over the world - America being the 'prize', rings of a Muslim version of The Protocols of The Elders Of Zion.

This is where the republican party is at right now.
They continue to deny it, and they constantly call anyone who points out their racism and xenophobia 'the real racists' simply because we're pointing out theirs.

But it is this type of open and institutional racism that overwhelmingly proves the point that every rational human being knows: if you're not a white, right wing-orientated 'christian', then you may as well be a child molester in the eyes of the majority of the republican constituency.
That is how low they have sunk, and how gullible the majority of them are.

As much as I hate to use the Nazi theme as comparison: Germany's right wing did to Jews(and other groups they didn't like) in the early 1930s what American right wing are now doing to Muslims - and Latinos. And Gays. And black folk, and 'liberals', and intellectuals.
Certainly the main target - Protocols of Zion style - are Muslims.
They may not be anywhere close to how Nazi Germany ended up, but they are sure doing everything that the right wing did in early '30s Germany.

It is our responsibility - our duty - to point out that not only is the behavior 0f the right wing eerily similar to early '30s Germany, but so are the circumstances America finds herself in.
And unless the mainsrteam media begin exploring this issue, they will continue to get away with it - and we may well see a Muslim holocaust in our lifetime.
After all: the majority on the right actually do believe that ALL muslims - yes, all 1.5 billion - are the enemy.
I cannot think of anything more frightening than putting people like that in charge of our arsenal.

An advocacy group trying to get members into Congress as interns, with the hope that they might help influence legislation.

Wow, what a completely new concept that's never been done once before in the history of all time.

As a former intern coordinator on Capitol Hill I find this both hilarious and a little disturbing. Interns are not allowed to be anywhere near sensitive information in a Congressional office (such as pending legislation, reports from the respective research arms of Congress, and especially national intelligence). They do mundane tasks like answering the phone, running copies, and assisting the staff assistants and office managers in clerical work. So, to claim these interns may be "Manchurian" is humurous because even if terrorists were planted as interns they wouldn't have access to jack crap.

What is disturbing is that these members of Congress, or in the very least their staff, know this full and well and are shamelessly engaging in race-baiting. To pull in harmless college-age interns who are simply trying to learn and get some experience on the Hill - which is one of the most intense internships a college kid can have - is unconscionable. These kids are in many ways shining demonstrations of the faith young people have in democracy. They shouldn't be discouraging future interns from engaging in government to score political points, and they certainly be profiling because of one's affiliations. As punishment, these offices ought to be stripped of their right to have unpaid interns. Let them learn the hard way what it's like without having them around!

i wonder if they would be bothered if they went undercover at, say, one of these places: http://www.vancouver.wsu.edu/fac/kfountain/christian.html and found the same "Strategy" document, but the word "muslim" was replaced with "christian."

Well, at least we know why she went on Fox... as the propaganda arm of the GOP, she is using them to gin up viewers to "contact Congress"... how long before Steve King (R) Iowa, puts his foot in his mouth over this... Bachmann? A little surprised we haven't heard from her... Of course, it's early yet.

I'm really confused as to exactly what it is anyone is claiming CAIR has done wrong. Usually I can at least understand the latest right-wing outrage du-jour, but I'm just scratching my head on this one. Is there some law against Muslims being interns on Capitol Hill I am not aware of? Was this an obscure provision of the Patriot Act?

I think it goes like this:

Step 1: Some practicing Muslims work as interns in Congress.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: The destruction of Western Civilization, forever! (Oh, and there'll be gay marriages, you know they're going to figure out how to tie Islam to gay marriages somehow.)

Not gay marriages - Being allowed to have up to four (4) wives under muslim theology. That should get out at least the male votes.

Bizarre, isn't it.
Like the Palin campaign, they seem terrified that they'll loose their base - and instead of trying to gain supporters, they seem 100% focused on keeping the fringe/hard right on their side.

In other words; they continue to show their utter desperation.

I'm slow, so please bear with me while I try to figure this out:

- A right-wing organization planted a fake Muslim intern in an American-Muslim organization
- The American-Muslim organization provides interns to Capitol Hill
- Therefore, the American-Muslim organization is planting terrorists in the government

Am I missing something? Geometry was not my best subject.

Didn't Sue Myrrick state back in 1994 that as one of Newt Gingrich's contract on America zombies, she'd only run for two terms? She did. Which means she's a liar. Why believe her insane babbling now? What's amazing is that the city of Charlotte continues to vote for this moron.

Why target the Judicial, Intelligence, and Homeland Security Committees and not Agriculture, she asks? Well, if one of the objectives of your organization is to protect the civil liberties of the group you represent in the face of a National Security State, I should think that those three committees would have a whole lot more to do with your area of interest than the committee that handles farm policy.

501(c)(3) organizations are restricted as to the lobbying activities they may conduct, but that does not mean they are prohibited from any lobbying activity whatsoever. They may not campaign in support of or in opposition to particular political candidates, but they can engage in non-partisan voter education activities, as well as in voter registration and GOTV efforts. Similarly, they may not attempt to influence legislative bodies on particular legislation, confirmations, etc., but they may conduct educational meetings and activities on public policy issues.

You can advocate for your issue, you just have to be very careful how you do it.
