The Obama Administration has released a lengthy response to the Washington Times story that reported Democrats are using the White House as a fundraising tool, saying that "contributing does not guarantee a ticket to the White House, nor does it prohibit the contributor from visiting."
"Given that nearly 4 million Americans donated to the campaign, it's no surprise that some who contributed have visited the White House," the statement says.
The Times reported that top donors were invited to bring their families to the executive bowling alley, and that high-value DNC contributors were promised access to administration officials.
As TPMDC reports, Michael Steele immediately called for an investigation into the matter, though he didn't seem to specify who should do that investigating.
Here's the White House's response, which does not address the question of access to officials:
President Obama has opened the doors of the White House to hundreds of thousands of Americans since the administration began, and for the first time in history, records detailing who visited the White House will be made public on a regular basis. Many of the people mentioned in this story have been friends and associates of the Obamas for decades - including college roommates and family friends whose relationships predate and are separate from the President's career in public service. Given that nearly 4 million Americans donated to the campaign, it's no surprise that some who contributed have visited the White House as have grassroots organizers who didn't contribute financial support and people who actively opposed the President's candidacy.
As part of an effort to open up events at the White House to thousands of Americans, we have at times provided tickets to events to the DNC, among many other organizations. Our understanding is that those tickets have in turn been distributed to grassroots supporters, contributors and elected officials. Contributing does not guarantee a ticket to the White House, nor does it prohibit the contributor from visiting.
This Administration has across the board set the toughest ethics standards in history. As a result, we have reduced special interest influence over the policymaking process to promote merits-based decision-making. We believe that is due in no small part to our insistence on strict adherence to the rules - an approach we intend to continue

I gave $400 to Obama during the 2008 campaign and more to the Democratic party. And I've visited the White House during the Obama administration. If the GOP and the Washington Times calls me a corrupt crook, should I take that as a compliment?

I would take it as a compliment. I am happy to say I gave $575 to Obama and about that much to other candidates and I feel the same way. I knew this story was bullshit when it appeared on TPM earlier where they linked to the Washington Times, As soon as I saw the source I knew it was just more b/s from the MSM. Of course, most of the posters bit on it right away

It has to be a lie that wealthy campaign donors can hang out in the White House: most of them are now ambassadors!

"A cynic studying the latest batch of nominees might conclude that the price of an ambassadorship has soared from roughly $200,000 under the Rovian regime to $500,000 under Rahm Emanuel."

I'm all for average Americans buying access to their government through donating to political candidates and parties... after all giant corporations have been doing it for decades.

Is Michael Steele trying to claim that donors to the Republican Party never visited the White House under Bush? I seem to remember differently.
F-ing hypocrites!
