Well, it looks like we were right.
The Chamber of Commerce hoax was perpetrated by the Yes Men, in tandem with a group of activists known as the Avaaz Action Factory.
Yes Man Andy Bichlbaum showed up at the 11am press conference that had earlier been announced by a "Chamber of Commerce" press release, and, impersonating a Chamber executive, declared:
We at the Chamber have tried to keep climate science from interfering with business. But without a stable climate, there will be no business.
At some point, reports Mother Jones, an actual Chamber spokesman showed up and yelled: "This is fraudulent!"
The Avaaz Action Factory (AAF) is affiliated with Avaaz, an international progressive activist organization. David Sievers, an organizer with the group, told TPMmuckraker that the thinking behind this morning's stunt developed out of "ideas being thrown around" in discussions between AAF, the Yes Men, and BeyondTalks.net, another activist group calling for action on global warming.
"The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a parody of itself in running circles around its own position on climate," said Sievers. "So Yes Men took the opportunity to parody them."
Did Sievers think the action -- which duped Reuters, the New York Times, and the Washington Post, among others -- was a success?
"It's clear that the Chamber is having a crisis with its climate position," said Sievers, referring to the recent exodus of several companies citing the Chamber's opposition to efforts to address global warming. He said that in so far as his group is able to draw attention to their difficulties with maintaining an anti-climate stance privately, while pretending to support action, he views it as a success.

Everytime the Yes Men make a corporation stand up and loudly proclaim they stand in opposition of what the Yes Men have just announced, I believe it is a major shock to the system. Good on them!

15 minute interview with the Yes Men to listen to:
Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, discuss their work as political activists and their documentary "The Yes Men Fix the World," which follows them as they pull pranks on the world of big business. "The Yes Men Fix the World" is playing in New York at Film Forum through October 20.

I don't think this is funny.
There can be no argument that the environment is a danger to business in the U.S. You might say the environment is socialist since it is the same for everyone. In other words, the environment is anti-American.
There. I said it. I feel better now.

Remember that for at least a year after September 11, the Bush administration FBI still listed "left Wing Environmental" activist groups as the biggest terrorist threat to the United States. Today, the Yes Men proved exactly how dangerous they really are.

I don't know if "MNPundit" was serious, but if anyone has an answer to give, I'll ask it serious-fashion: is this legal?
Never mind the civil side of things, but I was curious if this wouldn't trip some obscure anti-impersonation law. I'm not saying they SHOULD get indicted for... whatever... but I am curious if they COULD. (For serious.) I'm guessing if anyone has researched the legality of this ahead of time, it's the guys who did it, but that doesn't tell us whether they thought it was clear sailing, or if they were just willing to take a risk.
Any appropriately serious internet lawyers have an opinion?

If not, I'd say it fits quite nicely into the non-violent civil disobedience column. Which redeems it quite graciously.
Plus, it made me LOL.
The Chamber of Commerce should dump the hypocrisy and take the name "Chamber of Corporate Control."

Great job as always guys. And GREAT timing. The Chamber is hitting an all time low with their climate blindess, and that's saying something for them. No environment....no business. What exactly keeps them from understanding this?

Hmmmmmmmm... this article listed in the same headline column as "New York Times to cut 10% of Newsroom staff". After this debacle, they probably figure they don't need that additional 'news' staff since they're not fact-checking anyway.

The Yes Men are not so much punking troglodytes like U.S. Chamber of Commerce, their principal goal is to punk the stenographic news media who will print as news anything on a properly formatted press release from a 'prestigious' or 'name' entity without fact-checking or even making a cursory phone call to confirm its veracity. They are great hoaxers in the H.G. Wells "War of the Worlds" tradition because in order for bait to be taken, it has to be right up to the gullibility line of the marks, in this case our brain-dead, clock-watching national news 'organs.'
Bravo, Yes Men.

Shame and mockery seems to be the only weapon left. Truth and justice is something for the movies - it only exists in movies.
I'm still shocked and amazed that so much of the working class thinks corporate interests are working for them. For that reason alone I hope the recession is just getting started - the truly ignorant aren't going to get it until they are back living in their mom's basement (if it doesn't get foreclosed).

These guys (Yes Men not the US Chamber of Conference) were planning an event near my hometown and sent me an email asking if I could lodge participants. Sadly I had already left for Korea, so I couldn't help.

Not to rain on the parade, and much as I despise the Chamber (insert disquisition on obfuscate naming of an organization), how is this not like the BONNER 'letters on stolen letterhead' case, which we all want to see prosecuted? (Other than taking WAAAY more cojones...)

how is this not like the BONNER 'letters on stolen letterhead' case,
Um, because to be effective, the Bonner fraud depends on not being exposed, but the Yes Men stunt's effectiveness depends on being "exposed"? And because the Bonner people hope nobody will notice what they are doing whereas the Yes Men hope everyone will?
Are you being deliberately obtuse?

The MSM will frame this as fraud. The public will never know what is going on in the mind of the pranksters. It is a publicity victory for the Chamber of Commerce, the poor victim of dirty tricks.

I would agree if this was in the context of a one-off event. Unfortunately for the US Chamber of Commerce, lingering scrutiny of its stance on climate disruption is not a publicity victory. For Finland, which has a very pro-US business community complete with Chamber of Commerce, the views expressed by Mr. Donohue are seen as driven by his alliance with railroads who haul coal, i.e. very petty. A more effective line of argument for the USCoC might be that dealing with climate change inevitably produces winners and losers, but from an ethical standpoint, US businesses, both small and large, support the transition to a low-carbon economy. As one bank economist friend observed, "Really, we all know there are resource wars, but nobody is invading anybody else's country to steal their coal."

The entire episode is hilarious. The MSM got punked. Now it falls farther into the theatre of the absurd as the CofC is calling for an investigation.
That sounds about right...if any big organization (especially when it is so busy trying to block legislation) is displayed in an unflattering light, their first move is to threaten litigation based on....?????? Sabre-rattling is always the weapon of choice, ooh, is everyone scared? Thought Not!
