Federal prosecutors want former congressman William Jefferson to serve up to 33 years in prison.

Court documents filed by the Feds today, and reported by Roll Call, state: "The Probation Office has calculated the Sentencing Guidelines for Congressman Jefferson ... in a guideline range of 324 to 405 months or approximately 27 to 33 years of imprisonment."

The documents continue:

Because Congressman Jefferson's crimes against the people of the United States were exceptional in their sheer number, length, and breadth, the United States respectfully requests that this Court sentence the defendant within the applicable guideline range. While the guidelines sentence calculated by the Probation Office is lengthy, it is appropriate, in that Congressman Jefferson's criminal activities have surely caused or substantially added to the loss of public confidence and trust in our nation's highest levels of government.

In August, the former Louisiana Democratic lawmaker was convicted on 11 counts relating to a web of schemes in which he used political contacts to help American companies win contracts in West African countries. In return, payments or other financial benefits were given to Jefferson family members' companies.

Jefferson's sentencing is scheduled for Friday in U.S. District Court.

This should be a lesson to Democratic lawmakers: If you're going to run a crime factory make sure you're a Republican and considered a member in good standing of the GOP. It'll shave years off your sentence.

That's forsure. It didn't take them very long to throw this guy in jail while Delay, Ensign and all the other crooks are just living the good life. It doesn't pay to be black in this country, not even with a black president.

Justice is not blind if you are a Republican crook stealing from a minority group.

"Abramoff and his partner Adam Kidan were sentenced March 29, 2006, by Judge Paul Huck of the Federal District Court in Miami, Florida, to 70 months in federal prison, placed on three years' probation, and "ordered to pay a total of $21.7 million in restitution" for their role in a fraud scheme involving the "$147.5 million purchase of the shipping line, SunCruz Casinos, in 2000."

Not bad. $128.5 million in return for less that six years in prison. That is over $20 Million a year. How can I get into a program like this and volunteer to spend a year in a Federal minimum secutity prison in return for $20 Million?

On the other hand, a black Democrat gets 33 years for having $90,000 in "cold" cash?

It is way past time for Obama to clean out the Republican radicals controlling the Department of Justice. They have become Obama's radical Republicans.

33 years is a long long time. A lot of Republicans and military officers are heading for long long sentences in state and federal penetenteries. All federal judges were appointed by the president and local judges were mostly elected. You must wonder and wish hwo and why state circuit, appellate and supreme courte judges were put in office. Was it an election or...?

Gee, that formula would put Dick Cheney in the slammer for over 1,000 years, just for the $30 million he was paid as a "bonus" by Halliburton. And he sure did deliver on that assignment!

Really...? Wasn't "Duke" Cunningham sentenced to a mere eight and a half years...? There must be some sort of important difference between the two crooks....

Yes, two differences.

One is white and a Republican and the other is black and a Democrat.

"criminal activities have surely caused or substantially added to the loss of public confidence and trust in our nation's highest levels of government."

So - that means that Jack Abramoff - will be in Jail for 33 years - woohoo!! Oh Wait - Abramoff only got 4 years??

Boy that "loss of public confidence" - is sure different for different politicos.

Jefferson did minor damage - compared to those like Abramoff - lt us please have some reality in the DOJ - regarding this sentencing.

Don't forget that Abramoff's sentence was reduced because he is cooperating with investigators to nail other Republican crooks.

Also, don't hold your breath waiting for any convictions to result from that "cooperation".
