Judge: Kwame Kilpatrick Violated Probation

Disgraced former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, now living in north Texas and working as a salesman for a tech company, may be headed for jail after a Michigan judge ruled today he violated his probation by not disclosing assets as required under a plea deal.

Kilpatrick has been slowly paying $1 million in restitution to Detroit as part of a 2008 settlement related to misdeeds, including lying about an affair with a staffer, according to the AP. But, the wire service reports, Kilpatrick hasn’t exactly been living on the cheap:

He’s had been making monthly payments of $3,000 … But prosecutors learned Kilpatrick and his wife have had other money, including $240,000 in loans, live in a rented mansion and drive fancy SUVs.

Kilpatrick’s sentencing is set for next month, but the judge could order him to jail before then.

If all this sounds familiar, that’s because in 2008, Kilpatrick was sent to jail for violating terms of bond by taking an unapproved trip to Canada.

In another development, the Detroit Free Press has a good piece today looking at the Kilpatrick Civic Fund, which previously drew criticism for funding trips for Kilpatrick’s family. Now, the Free Press reports that $222,154 vanished from the group’s tax filings between 2007 and 2008 without explanation.
