Sheriff Joe Arpaio is up-in-arms about an unusual newspaper ad placed by the Mexican Tourist Board, which appears to reference Arizona’s controversial new immigration law.
The ad, which ran Friday in the Arizona Republic, declares: “In Sonora, we are looking for people from Arizona.” Below those words is a picture of a man in what looks like a military helmet, holding binoculars to his face.
Arpaio, the hard-line Maricopa County lawman, has urged people to call the Mexican tourist board and ask what the ad means. “Are you going to racial profile me in Mexico, am I going to jail for two years in Mexico for violating the immigration laws in Mexico, will I be safe in Mexico,” he asked.
The Mexican tourist board, Visit Mexico, did not immediately respond to TPMmuckraker’s request for comment on the ad. But it would appear to reference Arizona’s harsh new immigration law, which has been condemned both by President Obama and Mexican president Felipe Calderon. Arpaio is a supporter of the law.
