The Lexington County Republican Party has called on state Sen. Jake Knotts (R) to resign over his comments about Republican gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, according to Politico.
Appearing on an internet radio show last week, Knotts referred to Haley as a “raghead,” and reportedly attacked her religion and family. Knotts later apologized.
According to Politico, the Lexington county party said Knott’s words brought “shame” and “disgrace” to the party and the state.
Joel Sawyer, executive director of the state GOP, tells TPM that while the state party has already condemned Knott’s statements, they have not ruled out stronger action. When the state party’s executive committee meets next on June 26, “there is going to be some interest in going further with an action against him,” Sawyer said.
