Waters Pushes For Ethics Trial Before Elections

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) wants the House ethics committee to set a date for her trial — and to set one before November’s midterm elections.

In a letter sent yesterday, Waters demanded that the committee release their allegations against her and that the adjudicatory hearing, or trial, be held as soon as possible, and before Election Day.

“I am deeply concerned by the Committee’s failure to announce a date for a public hearing in its most recent press release,” she wrote. “I feel strongly that further delay in the scheduling of the hearing violates the fundamental principles of due process, denies my constituents the opportunity to evaluate this case, and harms my ability to defend my integrity.”

The committee announced earlier this week that it is charging Waters with ethics violations. It did not, however, name the charges or announce a date for the hearing.

But the charges will likely have to do with meetings Waters set up between then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and a bank that her husband owned $250,000 of stock in. The bank then received TARP money.

Waters contends that she was properly assisting a minority-owned bank.
