Female-Only Swim Hour For Muslim Students Sparks Debate At GW

Female-Only Swim Hour For Muslim Students Sparks Debate At GW

Get out of the pool! It’s filled with Sharia!

At George Washington University, the Muslims Students Association this year successfully lobbied to create a weekly women-only swim hour at the pool. Once a week, a dark tarp is hung over the glass door, a female lifeguard watches the pool and only female swimmers are allowed in.

The program, called “Sisters Splash,” went unnoticed by the larger GWU community — until the school paper wrote about it.

By all accounts, the GWU community has been, for the most part, supportive of the swim hour.

But there has been some blowback since TBD.com and the Washington Post picked it up, including questions over the program’s legality and vicious Internet comments that veer into the Islamophobic.

A couple of comments, as noted by Inside Higher Ed:

“Should a minuscule minority force the overwhelming majority [to] abide by their rules or should it be the other way around?”

“Western society should not accommodate to Islam on this point; it is Islam that should change.”

And then there are the usual suspects, like the blog Creeping Sharia, which wrote, “The Muslim Students Association is shaking down universities while their fellow Muslim Brotherhood-linked legal jihadists, CAIR, are shaking down private pools. You can take a Muslim out of sharia, but apparently you can’t take the sharia out of some Muslims.”

But stealth jihad alarmists will always be stealth jihad alarmists and, as we noted above, it seems that most students and faculty have been supportive of the program.
