The Federal Election Commission has rejected a leading wireless trade association’s request for permission to enable political campaigns to solicit donations via text message, ABC News reports.
An advisory report from the FEC said the program would not adequately “separate corporate funds from political contributions,” ABC reported. The report also said it proposal would allow people to exceed the $50 limit set for anonymous donations to political campaigns.
But the report, left open the possibility for a new proposal for donations via text message if it meets certain conditions, ABC reported.
The Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) and its members “must now assess whether implementing those requirements is economically viable,” lawyer Caleb Burns, told ABC.
