House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) isn’t passing judgment on Rep. David M. Rivera, the Florida Republican caught up in an expanding probe into alleged financial improprieties by law enforcement agencies in his home state.
“We’re waiting to see how this plays out,” Boehner told reporters at a news conference on Wednesday. Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) didn’t have much to say about the issue earlier this month.
Rivera is under investigation by the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Public Corruption Bureau, but a spokeswoman wouldn’t say if they were investigating loans from a gambling-related marketing company run by his mother.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee slammed Boehner’s dismissal of the scandal.
“Apparently Speaker John Boehner thinks it’s ok for a Congressman to be under criminal investigation for ethics violations as long as the criminal activity happened before they were sworn in,” the DCCC’s Jesse Ferguson said in a statement to TPM. “It seems clear that Republican Leaders like John Boehner and Eric Cantor didn’t really mean zero tolerance for growing criminal investigations into their own members like Congressman David Rivera. Now they’ll tolerate it, but just this once… “
