Donna Brazile On Voter ID Laws: Republicans Willing To Violate Civil Rights To Win Elections

Donna Brazile

The Democratic Governors Association is raising money for a voter protection project intended to combat the Republican-backed voter ID laws that are sweeping through legislatures around the country.

“In Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Texas, extremist governors or legislatures are willing to violate people’s civil rights in order to win elections,” Donna Brazile wrote in an email to supporters trying to raise money for the DGA’s Voter Protection Project.

Brazile writes that her sister in Florida was a victim of voter suppression during the 2000 election. She was asked for multiple forms of ID and proof of residency, even though that was against the law.

“She knew her rights, and fought for them, but there are hundreds of thousands of voters who suffer the same indignity in silence,” Brazile wrote. “Her story is just one of too many, most of which never get heard.”

“Sometimes you don’t realize how important the right to vote is until you lose it. Let’s make sure no one in America ever has to experience that loss again,” Brazile wrote.
