Right-wing bloggers and Fox News have managed to squeeze in one more liberal conspiracy theory before the end of 2011.
The controversy is over a section in the Girl Scouts’ media guide that advises readers to use sites like snopes.com and MediaMatters to fact-check what they read on the Internet. Because, as Steve Doocy put it on Fox & Friends on Thursday, MediaMatters is “clearly a lefty blog,” and the Girl Scouts telling members to turn to them means they must secretly be in the tank for the left.
Glenn Beck’s site The Blaze first wrote about the guide on Tuesday, and said that it was pointed out to them by a parent of Sydney Volankski, a fifteen-year old former Girl Scout who left the organization in 2010 when she says she realized the organization has a “clear liberal ideology.”
In response, she started a blog called “Speak Now: Girl Scouts,” and on Thursday she popped up on Fox News.
Doocy asked Volanski how she “started noticing, kind of, what you would feel is a liberal agenda” in the Girl Scouts.
“My sister and I started a website to help inform families of the more leftward leanings of Girl Scouts because they promise to be neutral politically and about certain social issues,” Volanski explained, “but when you examine the women that they promote and the websites and books that they refer girls to, there is a clear liberal ideology, like with the MediaMatters site.”
“For eight years we were in Girl Scouts and we didn’t realize that Girl Scouts was promoting such a liberal ideology,” she added.
Watch the segment here, complete with a “Liberals, Socialists, Democrats” title card:
The story was picked up by a number of right-wing bloggers, including one at Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government who quipped: “Think twice before buying Girl Scout cookies next year.”

The biggest thing you face everyday..other people's ignorance. Case in point.
Girl Scouts are evil, the Muppets are evil, Time magazine supports home grown terrorists. If you were an individual saying these things you would be standing before a judge trying to explain why you shouldn't be committed to mental health institution.
Once again the right objects to anything that teaches kids to think for themselves or look for facts vs lies. An ignorant electorate is easy to instill fear into through lies and false claims.
There is a reason I love Girl Scout Cookies.
Yes.
Proof of the leftwing cabal having taken over the Girl Scouts is their recent rejection of an "intersexed" child.
Everybody knows that the LEFT WING RADICALS pushed the Girl Scouts in this direction because the LEFT WING RADICALS believe ONLY in gay rights, and not in the rights of ALL people!!!!
Speaking of gay, what is the deal with Fox personalities Greg Gutfeld and Andy Levy. If their not gay, I don't know who is. kinkster
Would the word "all" include gays? kinkster
Well, this just shows the intelligence of Faux Noise.....They have to beat up on a Organization that has been around for ages.....Something that is positive, oh boy, can't have that!.....It might just promote independence in girls......Funny, you never hear anything about the Boy Scouts......So this just proves that Faux and the rest of the Mental Minions of the Reichties are chauvinist pigs........
What is sad is that there are people whom believe this BS.......
The really sad thing is that this is clearly an instance where parents are using their kids for their own message and gain. She seems like an intelligent young woman, but I don't care how intelligent you are -- what kid knows about Media Matters and Planned Parenthood, truly knows what they are and what they do? If this girl was in girl scouts so long with them pushing their liberal agenda day after day, why did she just now notice it with this? And why did they create a spinoff website ripping their connections with Planned Parenthood? This is ridiculous and sad. These girls are a front for someone else's agenda.
So,like Fox doesn't much promote an extreme right-wing nut-job ideology.
So, is fox going to start a replacement for the GSA? Perhaps Grissly Mommas in training, run by Sarah? Bristol could teach them absinance.
And people wonder why fox news lost 10% of their viewers last year.
el-kabong we wonder why they didnt lose more but i guess folks still tune in for the laugh of the day at the idiots at faux.
That's why I watch. To see how paranoid they are and roll my eyesRobert Nordgren el-kabong
Ah, Fox. The 24/7 conspiracy channel. If there ain't nothin we want to report, we'll make something up!
Using young people in this manner is deplorable! The right-wing will stop at nothing to promote their agenda.
What sort of women do they think should be promoted as role models? Michelle Duggar?
SCREW THE INSANE RADICAL EXTREMIST RIGHT WINGERS, IM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THEM TRYING TO MICROMANAGE EVERY STUPID THING IN AMERICA, THEY ARE A BUNCH OF IDIOTS AND REALLY SHOULD BE REJECTED! NOBODY WANTS THEM TO STICK THEIR SNOTTY NOSES INTO ONE MORE THING EVER!!!
Faux promotes the barefoot and pregnant wife in the kitchen plan for young women. Rupert Murdoch is a yellow journalist who used all the sexist tricks to climb from the sewer. Clearly he brought plenty of that filth with him.I'll be ordering way more cookies, even on my diet, I'll give them to skinny girls to let them know they shouldn't let fascist bastards mold them into anything other than what they desire to be. Scouting Rocks!
Have you seen the way they objectify their female anchors? Gretchen's skirts are so short she has to pinch her legs together. I was watching the end of O'Reilly one morning and caught them prepping for the show when O'Reilly's credits were rolling. Gretchen was wearing a dress so low cut I had to retch when I saw her bend over. Hey Gretchen, you're getting too old to wear those kind of clothes. longhairedhippytype
Welcome to the fact-free universe of Hutu TV, little one. Just learn swallow the bait and learn how to hate. FAUX News may have a slot for you.
Doubling my cookie order this coming year.
LOL!! Checking facts is a liberal thing? Boy, I think that says all we need to know about Fox and those on the far right! LOL!!
Can someone please explain to me why the photo is of a group of Asian girls in school uniforms? Or is that image supposed to make a subliminal link: that the Girl Scouts are turning kids into a bunch of "godless Communist Chinese marching in lock-step?"
By the way, I'm a Girl Scout leader. I don't believe GS is promoting any "agenda" other than teaching girls to be leaders, to think for themselves, to research, and to take action on issues they believe are important. In which case, the girl with the issues is simply being a fantastic Girl Scout.
Hendy Lund Appleton I didn't notice that, Girl Scouts of China? Last thing those on the right want are intelligent, resourceful, thinking woman. Nope, send back to being barefoot and pregnant. (Even if the pregnancy is a result of a rape). Keep up the good work Hendy!
Ed Vigdor Hmmm... in defense of whoever selected the photo... the Girl Scouts main page that's supposed to have press photos is down. So no official photos of what US Girl Scouts look like. Still... no accident.
Well, that's probably what the whole problem is...teaching girls to be leaders who think for themselves. How will they ever be eligible to join "The Family" if they think for themselves? Don't be silly. And ditto on the other comments...double my Thin Mints order this year please! Hendy Lund Appleton
Hendy Lund Appleton Those are Girl Scouts. Going by the uniform color they are Cadets. If you look closely at the uniforms you will see different merit patches on them. They do look like they are in a different country though, but it could just be a troop in a heavy Asian area. Those are Girl Scout uniforms though.
Laurel SaylerHendy Lund Appleton No, this is the Cadet uniform: http://shop.gshom.org/browse.cfm/cadette-sr-amb-un... It's beige. Blue is for Daisies (kindergarden). The girl scout uniform uses either a sash or a vest over a normal shirt. Those girls in the photo are wearing a uniform that includes a special shirt and an ascot, neither of which are part of the Girl Scout uniform.
Laurel SaylerHendy Lund Appleton Looks to be Girl Guides in Singapore, based on a picture I found in the WAGGGS image library. Girl Scouts (only in the US - all others are Girl Guides) haven't had a uniform anything like this for more than 30 years.
If you right-click on the photo, and look at the 'Properties', you can read the picture's title, part of which is: "girl-scouts-parade-singapore." Many nations have Girl Scouts and many have Girl Guides.
My bad - girls in Singapore are Girl Guides, not Scouts.
Actually, they are NOT members of Girl Scouts of the USA, they are Girl Guides from one of the 141 countries that have similar organizations who are part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. Girl Scouts of the USA Cadettes where khaki. Please check the GSUSA website at www.girlscouts.org
@Hendy Lund Appleton that's what I thought girl scouts was all about. my daughter was in brownies and would have went on to be a girl scout but there was no leaders in our area at that time
So this just makes me want to double my order of Girl Scout cookies in 2012!
Fox & Friends declared war on my kids' school for an utterly innocuous dance assembly last week. They have hit new lows in bullying. Please sign this petition if you believe that their vast resources should be put to better use than bullying Girl Scouts and Quakers. http://www.change.org/petitions/fox-news-apologize...
Signed the petition and shared as well, screw Fox.
Ann Doyle Thurlow
Thanks, Luca! Luca Pignataro
@Ann Doyle Thurlow OMG! Everyone knows how subversive the Quakers are! (What the bleep are those Fox idiots thinking...?)
I would have signed the petition, but it said the time for doing so was ended...
So is the hyperbolic echo chamber going to get up in Arms about another mother using their child to promote their own political views for political gain, like the gay mother who asked her son to ask Michelle Bachman that question on the campaign trail?
joshquasimoto Of course, if the little kid had a questiion for the President - maybe why he's a Socialist Marxist Communist Muslim America hating Terrorist - and his mother had to encourage him to ask, because he's a child and, even though the question was his, he still got shy in front of the camera, well, that mother would be a patriot, right?
If she didn't notice this for eight years, why is she whining now?
And notice when the Boy Scouts prohibit atheists and agnostics from becoming members, or institute anti-gay policies, these folks are the first to say that they're a private organization and can do what they like.
walterledgett50 She's whining now because she finally got her brain washed. If there really were a "clearly liberal agenda," these girls had to be brain dead not to notice for 8 years. I'll be buying MORE Girl Scout cookies this year and donating them to the food bank.
Anne Nelsonwalterledgett50 As long as the Girl Scouts have the coconut cookies in their presenttion of cookies, I'll be buying them.
Fox and Friends is just scared that a bunch of Girl Scouts are going to come and kick the living shit out of them. And from what I can see, they could do it, too. Shit, a bunch or BROWNIES could stomp those pathetic weanies.
