DHS Raids: Why Now?

For Washington insiders, one of the most troubling aspects of the Department of Homeland Security's six-state raids is their timing. An agency doesn't execute the largest immigration raid in U.S. history, complete with a press conference and a pretty color map for republishing, because it woke up one day and decided the weather was right.

In fact, it seems there's almost no political climate for the raid. The elections are over, Congress is in recess, it's two weeks to Christmas, the White House has no plans to talk about immigration until next year. I talked this morning with one of the top corporate lobbyists on immigration issues this morning, who echoed the sentiment.

Laura Reiff is with Washington powerhouse firm Greenberg Traurig (once home to Team Abramoff), from where she chairs the "Essential Workers Coalition" -- a bunch of corporations and trade groups which rely on low-wage labor.

Saying she was "very disappointed" with DHS for the raids, she lambasted their political sensibilities. "It makes no political sense whatsoever" to run these raids now, she told me. "I can understand doing this prior to the elections." Furthermore, everybody in power is already focused on immigration -- as an issue for next year. "I talked to the president and Karl Rove last week" about the importance of immigration reform, she said. It's a top priority for both Democratic and Republican leadership. . . You don't need to go in and do these high-profile raids."

A test run. Right now the fallout from errors won't be fatal like in election season.
And if you do one big raid now it sets a precedent that you can point to when people accuse you of doing these things as an political stunt close to the elections.

This is probably a stretch, but: we do know that the Bush Admin is generally more lenient on the immigration issue than most in the GOP, and more lenient than many Dems. An action which brings to light the human side of this right before the holidays might help people understand and sympathize more, helping to set up a more humane compromise next year . . . ? (Again: it's a bit of a stretch)

I live about 50 miles from the plant in question, and we have a similar plant, with a similar number of illegal aliens in my town of Ft. Morgan, CO.

The issue here is not about illegal immigration. These plants have been using illegal immigrants for decades. It is an open secret and everyone in the community knows it.

The truth is that the work in these plants probably ranks pretty high among dirty jobs, and most Americans don't want to do this type of work. The only Anglos in the plants tend to be Department of Agriculture inspectors, and they are paid very well.

The issue is identity theft. The illegals steal the social security numbers and other identity information from Americans with Latin surnames. They usually mess up the victim's credit and cause them all sorts of tax problems. The victim will find that more income has been reported to the I.R.S. than they actually earned, because the illegal's earnings are added to their own. When the illegals apply for credit or file bankruptcy, they use the victims social security number, and can mess up their credit for years.

When an illegal gets a counterfeit driver's license, it means that they have not taken the same driving test the rest of us take. They may or may not know how to operate a vehicle safely. The certainly do not know the rules of the road. And they typically do not maintain liability insurance.

Criminal impersonation is a crime in the state of Colorado. There is little difference between an illegal alien using a stolen social security number, and a scam artist in Romania phishing for personal information.

1. (a) Julie Myers' recess appointment to head ICE was returned, failed, by the Senate last week and she needed to show something on her resume prior to looking for private sector work.
(b) I think the head of DoJ's criminal division (a female political who I remember Barbara Comstock was making-very-nice-to last holiday season) was also a failed recess appointment.
2. Dobbs needed to beat the snot out of unions (particularly UFCW) for having the temerity to protest (on behalf of legal workers, non-racial classification by arresting officers and union members) for the benefit of the Repug base.

4. Swift didn't pony up enough last cycle, or their competitors ponied up especially well.

This was not an issue of identity theft. If it were, it would be much easier to isolate specific IDs via social security pay-ins. If one has a history of payment into social security from say NY, NY for 20 years, then suddenly payments also start coming in from a company in Salt Lake City, one could at least build an investigation on the matter. Considering of 1400 or so rounded up, only 67 were charged with identity theft, one cannot seriously claim that to be the 'point' of the raid, maybe the blunt instrument, but hardly the point.
My guess, a trial run to see how many can be rounded up in a short time, and how many of those rounded up will agree to military service in exchange for 'eventual citizinship'. I think this is part of the 'double-down theory'. If a third or more of those rounded up in this raid agree to military service, I believe we will be seeing more and more of these Identity Theft Actions.

These raids accomplish two things simultaneously. They help the Bush Administration appear to be serious about border enforcement while terrorizing more business people into swallowing a new version of the Senate's amnesty/guestworker program.

The 2006 Senate immigration reform bill contained an amnesty for employers of illegal aliens as well as for the illegal aliens themselves for a reason.

The federal government has spend years actively discouraging employers from asking too many question about the immigration status of prospective employees. Now these same corporate officers could face fines and/or jail time for immigration law violations they were forbidden to prevent in the first place.

I worked for the government for 26 years and retired 11 years ago. Thankfully I have not had to work for this misadministration.

The men and women that work for the government outside of Washington go about their jobs largely unaffected by politics. Cases like this are developed by people doing the job that their agency is mandated to do, by laws passed by Congress. A case of this scope has to have been developed over a period time. Information that led up to it was developed by old fashioned case work based on noticing a common thread in interviews.

To conduct these raids required coordination at a level above the local office that originally developed the information. It also would have required detailing large numbers of agents. That would have had to involve Washington, if only because of the funding issued. Cases can and do get killed at that level, based on politics. So could politics be involved? Possibly. Is the timing based on politics? Maybe, maybe not. But anyone who has worked in or around law enforcement, knows that cases develop, regardless of the calendar.

To say these raids were based on politics, is a bit of a stretch in my opinion.

I really don't understand the timing either... But watch out for this "ICE" agency. They seem alot more like the KGB than a regular law-enforcement agency. Falling under the DHS, they seem to think they can justify anything... like these secret detention centers, etc. I wonder if, because they are part of DHS, maybe they think some rules involving privacy and 4th ammendment rights of citizens don't apply to them, like they do to other, more established agencies.

Just a week or two ago, she was bragging about their efforts to capture viewers of online child pornography. They seemed to be able to round up an awful lot of them with little effort. Which made me wonder if they are surveilling the internet in some way that has yet to be admitted to. Of course, kiddie porn is a problem and maybe the FBI or some other agency should be investigating. These people are supposed to be doing immigrations and customs law enforcement.

Folks -- this one is easy. Big employers of undocumented labor are using the DHS and the ICE to scare the heck out of workers who might even be thinking of unionizing. First thing that happens when workers start talking with each other, the employer starts saying workers will have to provide new ID showing their legal status.

In Emeryville, CA, Woodfin Hotel workers thought they should be paid the legal minimum wage -- next thing anyone knew, the hotel was waving ICE "no match" letters and nattering about "security." Of course if the workers were compliant, the hotel didn't give a damn whether they had papers. more here.

A big publicized brutal raid scares a lot of potential union members off.

It's as hard to believe that the raids were motivated by bigotry as it is to believe that it was a mere coincidence that the day of the raids was also the day of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, one of the most important holidays on the Mexican calendar.

According to today's Rocky Mountain News, (Denver),"Staged on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and barely two weeks before Christmas, these raids have disrupted hundreds of families in the immigrant community and frightened many thousands more."

Just after making my comment above, I was off reading reading some story about McCain wanting to shut down blogs and other places on the internet that allow discussion because that must be how cild pornography is spreading, you know... and it occurred to me that the timing of this may just be for Republican PR research purposes (polls, focus groups, etc.) Right now is a good time to be testing out issues for the upcoming political agenda.

A couple weeks ago, they had ICE testing out the "kiddie porn" issue with raids. Now, after checking the public response to the issue, they are using kiddie porn as justification to limit free speech on the internet. Now, it would make sense if they are testing public opinion from this multi-state raid about two hot-button issues (illegal aliens and identity theft) to justify another campaign against some other liberty they'd like to campaign for infringing. In a couple weeks, they'll do some other type of large-scale raid and the cycle continues. Sooner or later, we'll get so used to these law enforcement raids that we won't notice when they come for our neighbors - and then for us.

Creepy, eh? Or maybe I've just been reading a bit too much of this stuff.

Ok this is what I see but take it as you wish. I have a few points probably not really related to the Why Now them but think that it a good enteries.

I have been doing a lot of research over the past few years on immigration, terror ID theft and other stuff I have fixed my wife’s papers and here sisters papers as well as others. Now my first point is for the immigrants whom has found they way in to this great county of mine and my ancestors it is very easy to get your paper legally, all u need to do is go to the INS office get the I-9 form and the new Homeland Security forms as of 2 year ago, file them out and send them in, you will receive a letter back from the INS office saying that that have received these document and in 6 to 18 months you will get an acceptance letter to file for residency. With this letter and some time the recite letter you can go to the SS office and get a None work auth SSN card and apply for legal work permit so any 1 here after 2 years if they DO NOT HAVE a criminal back ground that they are hiding or just don’t want to get Legalized for what every reason should have a legal form of work promotion.

The US Border Patrol has said that 1 out of every 3 or like 3 out of 10 border jumpers have a criminal recorder in there home country.

Now with this in mind most immigrant get in the US by over staying their Visa or by crossing the border illegally, if they use a smuggler to cross the border and are from Mexico they pay $1500 to $2500 dollars each, if they are not from Mexico they pay $5000 to $60,000 each. I saw a new article a week ago were a North African girl was stopped on the Texas / Mexico border with altered south African Passport and had $8,000 dollars cash on her. Why $8000 cash and Why on the border and Not on any airplane???
Also in the a different article Hugo Chaves is bringing Humas and Hesbala member to Venezuela teaching them Spanish and giving them Venezuelan papers. Why ???
Now if you read all these articles about the ICE Raid most of them do not say where the immigrants are from just Mexico or Latin descent, but 2 of them listed the country that they were from “ The arrested workers were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Peru, Laos, Sudan, Ethiopia and other countries, ICE said.” http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2006/1214/biz/stories/immraid.htm

And on top of all that you have Identity theft, Here is a easy way for a person how does not want to be found legally entering our country because of what reason we KNOW NOT and can get papers and work in a MEAT plant and blend in with the Latin community. Think about it, FOOD Terror. Also you have Drug gang on the border as well as other criminal activity.

I know of several immigrants that have fake papers get in trouble and buy New papers and go on till they Get caught and do it over aging. My wife says that 80% of the people she know not of US Citizen have FAKE or FUALS papers and those are the ones that say they do and some of those are Claming children that they have that is not living with them in other country on there IRS income tax they pay $1000 to the IRS and get $5000 back.

I see this as an attempt to check out a number of issues with the Border Immigration and who is here at a time where there is NO Political affects for reason mentioned in the Article.

I will post more lately but that is what I have for now.

I'm hoping that the ICE enforcement is a sign of things to come. We can't afford the costs of the mexican invasion. Who in their right mind thinks that we can allow these illegal aliens continued free access to our country? I hope that ICE is doing its job so what is the big deal? I could care less if the raid was on Christmas Eve, as long as they are doing their jobs. I do not hear any illegal alien or one of those bleeding heart liberals crying about how they messed up another person’s credit by STEALING their social security numbers and running up large debts against this person.

Let us say it is about time they conducted the raids because the illegal aliens will break the United States. What will it cost us in added federal, state and local debt? Nobody knows what it will cost because nobody knows how many illegals are here.

Who among those reading this had concerned when Pastor Rios Sanchez, 55 killed three young folks in North Carolina because he was drunk and had fraudulent papers? He had been picked up four previous times for vehicle violations but nobody did a thing to deport him. So what happened when ICE and the Border Patrol failed to do their jobs? He KILLED three Americans. This is what happens when our churches and liberal bleeding heart people turn their backs when they know an illegal alien is driving drunk!

I do not want to see anyone die for any reason but if it must occur then let him hit a carload of illegal aliens when he gets drunk or one of those liberals who say illegals are here to do jobs Americans will not do. I just read where there have been approximately 175 applications filed for the jobs vacated due to the ICE raids at a Swift Company now that illegals have been arrested.

We all know that the economical and social price of illegal aliens is very high. We also know that our prisons are bulging with illegals.

The American government is committing treason when it comes to the criminal neglect of one of it's primary functions: Protecting it's citizenry from hostile foreign invaders. Read it, it is in the Constitution. Could this be why the ICE raids on Swift and Company?

Every day, illegal aliens murder 12 American citizens! That's 4,380 per year, and a total of 21,900 since September 11th.

The "Vietnam quagmire" that some like to screech about over the term of the Iraq war rests (as of this week) at 2,863, with an additional 289 reported in from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

If only the government put as much attention to protecting us against these marauders as they do against the Islamic terrorists!

But the killing doesn't stop with outright homicide... Rep. Steve King of Iowa also estimates that about 13 Americans are killed every day by illegal alien drunk drivers. That's an additional 23,725 deaths.

That brings the annual death toll to 9,125, with a five-year total of 45,625.
King also reports eight American children are victims of sexual abuse by illegal aliens every day- a total of 2,920 annually.

Based on a one-year in-depth study, Deborah Schurman-Kauflin of the Violent Crimes Institute of Atlanta estimates there are about 240,000 illegal immigrant sex offenders in the United States who have had an average of four victims each. She analyzed 1,500 cases from January 1999 through April 2006 that included serial rapes, serial murders, sexual homicides and child molestation committed by illegal immigrants.

As the number of illegal aliens in the U.S. increases, so does the number of American victims.

According to Edwin Rubenstien, president of ESR Research Economic Consultants, in Indianapolis in 1980, federal and state correctional facilities held fewer than 9,000 criminal aliens. But at the end of 2003, approximately 267,000 illegal aliens were incarcerated in all U.S. jails and prisons.

While the federal government doesn't track illegal alien murders, illegal alien rapes or illegal alien drunk driving deaths, it has studied illegal aliens incarcerated in U.S. prisons.

In April 2005, the Government Accountability Office released a report on a study of 55,322 illegal aliens incarcerated in federal, state, and local facilities during 2003. It found the following:

The 55,322 illegal aliens studied represented a total of 459,614 arrests- some eight arrests per illegal alien;

Their arrests represented a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses- some 13 offenses per illegal alien;

36 percent had been arrested at least five times before.
So what is the real cost to Americans? So why should ICE conduct the raids? THIS IS WHAT CONGRESS PROVIDED THE MONEY FOR THEM TO DO!

Economy, Lids and protesters are saying that they are helping the Economy here, Ok I don’t know all the math but lets take a look at what I do know.

The average Undocumented worker makes about $25,000 a year but range from 10,000 to $50,000. Much of this is unreported and the average field worker in South CA make about $14 a hour. They say the Pay taxes OK if they maid $25000 they would pay about 1500 in taxes but after deductions and Dependents they get about $2k to $5k back so they are getting more back then they paid if they report that they make only 10,000 which I have never seen they don’t pay anything and if they have dependences they get money back. I they have children here because they don’t report all the money they make they file for Welfare and Medicaid. That is $200 + a month. So I see more money going out then coming in also because the do not have insurance they hit out state hospitals and we tax payers pay for that too. Almost all the towns with high undocumented workers have severe social problem in those Cities. It was estimated last year that California paid $3 billon on medical and $2 billion on schools to undocumented workers.

Now the big Buying power.

Most of these workers don’t buy much about 85% of there income goes back to the country of origin. Mexico receives $52 billon a year from workers in the US that send it to there homes. This is Mexico second larges source of income next to there oil. That why the Mexican government does not want the US to do any thing it will hurt there Economy not ours. I seen articles that have total out going US dollars close to $120 Billion a year. This is US money that could of went to buy stuff in US stores but is not being spent in the US but is being sent out of the country as money not products. So how is $120 Billon a year being sent out of the country helping the economy??? How is it helping our Federal Deficit when we pay more out in Social Services they are paying in taxes. And we have not even hit the prison cont yet the last poster said there are over 200,000 illegal aliens in our prisons. It cost the government about $30,000 a year each to house them and feed them $30k times 200k = ~$6,000,000,000 and that’s a low figure.

SO tell me how more money going out of US and more money spent on Social Services Is helping the economy???

I think they are sucking this country dry!!!

Almost all the protesters that were walking the streets were ether illegal or were family of illegal workers, very few of them were honest Citizens.

I know that feelings run hot on this issue, and even though I am a life-long Democrat, I believe that INS should add field personnel to their staff that conduct random audits of businesses in their assigned areas to apprehend and deport persons who have entered or remain in the country illegally, and impose fines on the companies who employ them.
Do you know that the penalty for employing an illegal is $10,000.00 a head? Just think about the dent we could make in the deficit with a program like this, at least initially.
One thing you should know is that not all illegals are paid cash....many are paid through their employers' payroll.
I have worked in a payroll role for some years with several manufacturing companies and this is NOT ISOLATED to any specific industry. It is done all over, and I have been frustrated in my efforts to do the right thing--basically, told by employers to take bad ID so that they could save a few bucks.
The IRS would be uniquely qualified to assist in zeroing in on offenders, as most illegals either mark themselves exempt from income tax or claim a high number of dependents to avoid paying.
There are ways for companies to check work authorization status to ensure compliance, if they want to do it.
I, for one, will take any dirty job, as long as I am compensated for it, and I think that campaign finance reform would go a long way in helping us solve this. If our politicians are not tempted to get in bed with corporate lobbyists, our country might be able to recover from the many problems we have invited by allowing this current administration to throw our laws out the window in their quest for personal enrichment.

The real puzzle is why.

Bush signed the SPP treaty with Mexico and Canada a couple of years ago. This is the Security and Prosperty Partnership treaty of North America. Reading on this illegal treaty (bypassed Congress)through Wikipedia and the Council on Foreign relations and surfing the net, you will find that the SPP cedes a lot of U.S. Sovereignty to trade laws established with this North American treaty. The SPP also is based on a "no borders" concept. No border between the U.S. and Mexico and no border between the U.S. and Canada. There is a lot to indicate that, like Bushes other ventures, there is probably a shadow Government created including all three countries. My guess is the trial and result of the two border guards that were sentenced to 10 and ll years was based on these trade laws. In my opinion, it is a very real possibility that all the talk of declaring martial law has a great deal to do with the SPP. I am writing about the dissolution of the USA in favor of a North American Trade government. A lot of gun toting U.S. citizens are not going to like this once they find out exactly whats going on. The Canadians probably won't like it either. From what I have read, a fleet of U.S. Black hawk helicopters now patrols the U.S. Canada border in what the administration says is a drug inforcement activity. There were many practice instances of using a martial law type situation in the U.S. It may well be that Bush did try to put martial law into effect and the U.S. military balked. (They also balked once before on orders to invade Iran, I believe.)

The SPP is the reason Bush refuses to "secure" the U.S. Mexico border. Other reasons, of course, include the drug running industry that the Bushes have been involved in for years, according to some and the Bush created "terror industry" juggernaut.

Bush has been described as an "internationalist" among many other things but his handlers are New World Order types that want to rule the world. George HW Bush has used this term in his speeches many times. Their mind set seems to be an "elite" class ruling the world of slave workers.

Continuous wars, which both Bush and Cheney have called for, break down of social order through massive illegal immigration, homeland security and TSA terror crap, a draining of the economic and financial strength of the U.S. and removal of any social safety net (Social security, pensions, unions, welfare) all serve to reduce the ability of Americans to have a viable life style free of "big brother."

Large scale reduction of population may have been in the plan. Bush/Cheney are Peak Oil believers. Meaning there is less oil in the ground and within 20 years the oil will run out...the economies of the World will go to hell and World War III will truly begin. The invasion of Iraq was to secure oil, and probably in the instance of Iraq, keep it in the ground. Many large U.S. bases have been built in and around Iraq to protect proposed oil pipelines. This pipeline business seems to have fallen through when some countries decided to side with Russia and sell their oil and gas to them instead of American interest. Plus, Enron's dissolution.

Theory would have it that the elite will fair very well on a greatly diminished energy supply and a greatly decreased World wide human population remaining to sustain them.

The current administration still is dangerous and will become more dangerous the more they sense a loss of power.

Something changed in this past election. Every indication from Bush/Rove was that the Republicans would remain in power as in another fixed election. It would appear to me that Bush has pushed the Globalist agenda to far too fast and these guys pulled the plug in fear of either an American revolution or a total collapse of the World financially and economically.

Free trade in time in conjunction with job outsourcing will cause the collapse of the U.S. economy. We cannot compete against children working 80 hours a week for 43 cents an hour. However, the elite can't be supported if there is no production of goods and services once the U.S. is bankrupt.

It remains to be seen how much of this will be flushed out IF the democrats actually begin investigations and use the threat of impeachment if the administration continues to stonewall. This administration has a lot of secrets most of which are probably criminal in nature. These are not the type of people that will just give up power without "staying the course." Look for Cheney to resign shortly with McCain being sworn in as vice-president and a resumption of New World Order agenda beginning again with the 2008 Presidential election.

For you folks that see this as crap from a conspiracy nutjob, Haliburton was facing a possible loss of as much as 15 billion dollars to clean asbestos from the World Trade Center. There is no liabilty now.
