Another Rep Under Federal Investigation
From The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
Authorities are investigating whether Rep. Tim Murphy's (R-PA) legislative staff members performed campaign work while on government time, which would violate federal law, according to a broadcast report.Federal authorities have started interviewing Mr. Murphy's former staff members, according to KDKA-TV, which cited anonymous sources.
It's hard to keep track, but I believe this would be the 19th member of the 109th Congress under federal investigation. Time's running out. Who'll make it an even twenty?
Oh, and no mention of Murphy's alleged transgression should go unaccompanied by a link to this.

"He's (Senator Reid) selling off federal land that belongs to all of us and keeping the money in Nevada," said Janine Blaeloch, director of the Western Lands Project. Normally you would call that a very substantial EAR-MARK of the public's resources - but this time it's land not money!
However what does TPMmuckraker have to say about it: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING - because Reid's a Democrat.

It does not sound like Reid's provision stinks; Ensign co-sponsored it, and some pro-land preservation groups like it. Hastert's, on the other hand, is decried by leading senators from both parties, who plan to attempt to strip it in the 110th Congress. In short, it may be an old fashioned backroom Congressional horse trade, but there are no partisan ramifications.
Mike wrote on December 16, 2006 9:41 PM:Reid is not "in trouble" for anything. He didn't break any laws. Tim Murphy appears to have broken the law. That's news. Selling 70 sq miles of federal land and protecting 780 isn't a huge scandal.
Chris Baker wrote on December 16, 2006 10:14 PM:I notice Bloomberg News has picked up the Reid story with a news report titled "Reid hit over late move on bill - pushed through 2 state projects". NO ONE is surprised that Hastert is corrupt, however REID IS QUITE ANOTHER MATTER - that is to everyone except for TPMmuckraker.com.
Reading very quickly on the Western Land Projects web-site I believe there were two previous transfers of public land in Nevada - both which provided the funds received from the sale of public lands would be used to add environmentally sensitive land back to the public lands. However this new sale of something like 45,000 acres of public lands, added late Friday night when Congress adjourned Sat. morning, distributed the funds from the sale within the state of Nevada! The Western Lands Project is probably very concerned about the precedent that sets when the public lands are under assault by developers.
Also according to Bloomberg: "In a Nov. 13 speech on the Senate floor, Reid vowed that Democrats would 'stop dead-of-night legislating by opening meetings to the public'. Liberals of course will argue that 10:30 PM Friday night, when Reid's language was added, is not what Reid meant by "dead-of-night". Reid's office vigorously denies the application.
