Bush on Leaked Admin Memo: What Do I Know? I Just Work Here

Three weeks ago, on the eve of a White House summit involving the Iraqi prime minister, a classified memo by a senior Bush aide was leaked to the press. The memo, penned by national security adviser Stephen Hadley, questioned the willingness and ability of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to help U.S. interests.

But when a reporter today asked Bush -- who's made no secret of his intolerance for leaks -- whether he or his staff had called for an investigation into the leak, the president pleaded ignorance on the subject.

"You know, there may be an ongoing investigation of this, I just don't know. If there is, if I knew about it, it's not fresh in my mind. . .

"And we've had a lot of leaks, Mark," Bush continued, "as you know, some of them out of — I don't know where they're from, therefore I'm not gonna speculate."

The Bush administration has not been shy about going after leaks when it wants to: the New York Times is facing an investigation into who leaked its reporters details of the secret NSA domestic wiretapping program. At the time, Bush denied a personal role in ordering that probe.

Just keep playing the victim. Poor us, Bush can't remember, so nothing happens. It'll be forgotten, once again, and no one will have the guts to call this man Bush to account. Just more grist for the everyday story in the papers or on the tube. Bush has it down so he never gets openly blamed for anything and the journalists just wring their hands and lament. Makes me sick. What about you?

As important, Bush then elaborated to say that leaks have existed for years -- but catching someone in the act to hold up as an example might prove a point.

Keep in mind one major story making the rounds is Cheney's potential testimony in the Plame case.

A case involving a leaker. Of course, this was a leaker to HELP the White House.

Just a moment of poetic irony. Bush may get what he asks for...

Bush is finally getting some pointed questions from the press, and he's not handling them very well.

By the way, did anyone else notice the sloppy knot on Bush's tie? That might be OK if you're tying your tie while running to your first morning class at Andover, but this is the President of the United States. I wish he would show more respect for the office, if not for us.

Yeah, but this one didn't register as a "leak" because it was one of those deliberate, calculated, on-purpose ones. So you can't blame him for not remembering it like it was a problem or something.

It's harder to put a crisp knot in your tie when you're back to drinking.
