Muslim-Fearing GOP Rep To Go on Air
Two days after Rep. Virgil Goode's (R-VA) letter to constituents expressing his fear of "many more Muslims in the United States" came to light, he's finally going to talk to the press.
He's chosen the friendly environs of Fox News: at 4 P.M. today, he'll appear on Neil Cavuto's show to address the swelling controversy.
First reported in Charlottesville's local C-Ville Weekly, the story is now everywhere: The New York Times, CNN, and the AP all had stories out today. Goode has repeatedly refused to apologize for the letter and has said nothing more than that he stands by what he wrote. So it'll be interesting to see if he goes anywhere beyond that this afternoon. We'll be watching.

LMH wrote on December 21, 2006 12:36 PM:God speed Virgil. At least we have one Congressman that has the fortitude to speak about his concerns for America and it's future. We are a nation that will accept good people from all nations and from all religions and societies, but it will not accept those that will be divisive and be seditious and who pray and attempt to destroy the US of A from within. Fight on Virgil. Fight for America. You have our support.

This election is over Mr. Goode! Save the hate filled fear mongering for the next election.

He was always at the far right wing of the party, and resisted leaving the Democratic Party out of respect for his late father, a Roosevelt Democrat, but political opportunism finally overtook him. He was never dumb -- except dumb like a fox. He's really sunk to the depths as far as I'm concerned and seems to have abandoned whatever priniciples, education and sensitiity he once had. He used to be politically astute, and doesn't seem to realize he's going backward against the trend toward more tolerance in Virginia.

You say, "We are a nation that will accept good people from all nations and from all religions and societies, but it will not accept those that will be divisive and be seditious and who pray and attempt to destroy the US of A from within."
I agree with this, but I'm not sure how you think it backs up Goode's comments. He said: "[I]f American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran,"
He didn't warn us about "seditious" Muslims. He warned against Muslims generally.
Our discourse will never improve so long as there are people like you willing to obfuscate on every single issue to serve your own agenda.

They get sworn in by raising their hand. Mjany choose to have a picture taken/created with a Bible. Now, of course all the "real" Americans will have Bibles with them. Not just any Bible either. But the biggest damn Bible you ever did see. Just like the GOP showed who the real Americans were a few years ago. "Look, or lapel flag pins are bigger then theirs. We're the real Americans."

We accept all religions and societies, except the different ones? Kudos on your accidental, if correct, use of the word "pray."
Darren7160 wrote on December 21, 2006 2:07 PM:Rep. Goode is a bully. Period. He is proud of his trying to shame and humiliate a Muslim student who asked him a legitimate question concerning the 10 Commandments on his wall. Does Rep. Goode only represent Christians? Could he not have talked about the common theological heritage of the 3 great religions? No.
I have tried to follow Rep. Goode's logic, but even leaving breadcrumbs I was not able to find my way back.
The key word from the comments above was "Opportunist" which says it all. It is easy to run pandering to the fear and prejudices of the people. It takes a statesman to stand above it and to hold the truth to be higher.
That is why President Bush's attempt to compare himself to the great statesman, Churchill, was such a joke.
james risser wrote on December 21, 2006 2:17 PM:eric,
it seems that this story is being spun as 'should muslims be sworn in on a koran' again... but, it is just a red herring. it does not address the viscousness of the letter regarding the issue of immigration, and the desire of the religious extremists in this country to create a religious test for immigrants and potentially citizenship.
THAT is the the troubling issue; that is the permanent damage to the constitution that religious bigots such as this virgil desire.
nanuk wrote on December 21, 2006 2:48 PM:Rep. Goode,
Is yet another bigot who has found it acceptable in this climate to spew his ignorance. His letter has aboslutely no basis. He tries weave completely un-related issues into one. First his concern that Muslims will be elected and request to take their ceremonial oath on Quran and not a Bible due to immigration issues has not basis. Rep. Ellison the only elected Muslim to Congress in history has not an immigrant nor comes from an immigrant family. However, he would also probably have issue with Barak Obama running for Presidnetial office becuase his father was an immigrant. Secondly, there is absolutely no indication that Muslim immigrants to this country represent any nominal portion of the number of illegal immigrants in this country. In fact most if not all Muslim immigrants in this country are here legally. Whats sad is not that an elected official would make such repugnant and vile remarks but that his consiteuncy has not risen and asked for him to step down as their representitave.

"You are a bigot"
"No I'm not."

Your data is truly non grata.

He still keeps tying immigration to Islam. I don't get it.
Also, his reference to how any district can elect whomever they want is strange. As if Minnesota's 5th is somehow odd for electing a muslim. I live here and I can tell you that Ellison's religion had nothing to do with him getting elected. It has everything to do with the fact that he is a true progressive and every bit as liberal as the district is.

Nothing. It seems that Minnesota's 5th elected a liberal democrat and Virginia's 5th elected a bigot. Just like old times.

You are an incredible moron and a racist. You know how you equate "Traditions" with Christianity, and the Koran/Islam with "un-Traditional"? And you know how you balk at that which is un-Traditional? That's bigotry buddy. You just found a new way to declare to the world that you're a bigot. The rest of what you said just shows that you're a moron too. Your parents and teachers must be proud.

What goes unnoticed by the extreme right is that diversity in the US is beneficial. In WW II, Blacks were living under segregation and Japanese-Americans were interred. Despite this, The Tuskeegee airmen became legendary, never losing a bomber they were escorting and downing one of the first jet aircraft designed by the German Air Force. Black sailor Dorrie Miller took up a position at a weapon he hadn't been trained on to protect his ship and down enemy aircraft. Nissei soldiers were among the fiercest in combat.

Maximize our human resources, and win the war against Islamists. Islamists not Muslims are the enemy.

Priscilla, Queen of the Beach wrote on December 21, 2006 9:39 PM:Mr. Goode will be required to take an oath in January 2007 to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. His constituent letter seems to be calling for an overthrow of that very Constitution and its strong declaration that there will be NO religious test for those seeking election to office in the United States of America: Article VI, section 3, states that:
"...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." .
Note the word "NEVER". Is Mr. Goode planning and organizing a seditious overthrow with his Christianist compatriots and FOX news, like Mike and LMH above, all in the name of "tradition"?
What this new Right-wing hobgoblin story is saying is that we will be overrun with Muslims if we don't lock the borders to all but White, Christian capitalists, I suppose, and that seems to have the Republican radicals in an uproar.
What no one, including Goode, seems to appreciate is that there are actual AMERICAN born citizens who ALREADY claim Islam as their faith. The door can't be closed, Mr. Goode, et. al., unless you intend to not only overthrow the U.S. Constitution but close the libraries, shut down the Internet, brainwash the masses, and exterminate all who have knowledge of this non-Christian faith. Good luck with that.
The Christianists will not rest until we have civil war in this country. They are hellbound and determined to separate the chaff from the wheat and rid us of all nonbelievers. Unfortunately for them, they are a small minority and America has woken up and realized what a monster is in its midst. She will fight with all she had to prevent your hideous world-view from ever coming to fruition.

So if I understand you, God will cause an attack against America if we don't do anything about Muslims. What do you suggest for those Muslims already in the US? Incarceration? Interment? Deportation?
peace wrote on December 23, 2006 1:06 AM:I think 9/11 was caused by evil men who used their God given free will to commit an evil act. Post 9/11, a period was created were men and women of various faiths and ethnicities came together to aid a city in distress. The world was on our side. A glorious God created moment for goodwill for people of multiple countries to come together and fight an evil force was created. However, our President told US citizens to go shopping. The President told the world they were either with us or against us ,rather than thanking them for their support. Bush told the world "go screw yourself" if you don't like what I'm about to say. A God given opportunity was cast aside.
A second message was sent. A hurricane struck a city populated by a signifcant number of people who were barely surviving. Our President ignored those who were in need. People of faith, agonistics and atheists did more in the early days of Katrina than our President. This second God given message to our President was also missed. "How can you love me , who you cannot see, if you cannot love your brother who you can see?"
The people of NOLA were vilified as stupid and uneducated. Lights were brought into the city to provide a good videocast for a President who had turned a deaf ear to God's message twice.
The first message, your country is a beacon to the world, look at how the world is responding to your plight. Make the most of this moment. Be a uniter to fight future evil. The second message, don't forget those in need in your own country.
When you invoke God's name to suggest that bad things will happen because of a message from God, be sure you've paid full attention to past messages.
Oh, and if I were an Arab Christian, I wouldn't be too quick about wishing bad thinks on Arab Muslims in The US. Some of the bubbas in this society are not going to take the time to differentiate between a Danny Thomas-type (Lebanese) and an Osama-type.
Go in peace
Virgil Goode, Ignorant, red neck, and un-American. He is the type of person then is giving this country a bad name. I hope there are enough people in this country who are intelligent enough not to follow this racist guy. How he got to this position is statement of our political and social immaturity.
