Blog: NYT to Ignore White House, Run "Classified" Op-Ed

Over at the Washington Note, we see that the New York Times is set to reject a White House-led effort to block publication of an essay critical of its foreign policy.

Last week the paper was set to publish an op-ed piece by Flynt Leverett, a former Bush Administration official who worked at the Central Intelligence Agency, the Department of State, and on the National Security Council, which criticized the White House for its disastrous diplomatic approach towards Iran.

The CIA reviewed the article and cleared it for publication, but the White House put the brakes on it, saying it contained classified information that the CIA missed. Leverett cried foul: "All of my publications on Iran -- and, indeed, on any other policy matter on which I have written since leaving government -- were cleared beforehand by the CIA's Publication Review Board to confirm that I would not be disclosing classified information."

Now Steve Clemons, a friend of Leverett's, reports on his blog (ed.: see editorial note below) that tomorrow the Times will run the op-ed "with redacted lines 'blacked out.'" Clemons told me by phone that the Times will instruct readers where they can find the omitted information in other (unclassified) publications -- like, for instance, in Leverett's paper on the same topic called "Dealing with Tehran," published through the Century Foundation.

The information the White House had redacted, according to Leverett, "include Iran's dialogue and cooperation with the United States concerning Afghanistan in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and Iran's offer to negotiate a comprehensive "grand bargain" with the United States in the spring of 2003."

This is fascinating. Frankly, the best illustration of this administration's paranoia and boldfaced lying that I've seen in awhile.

Of course, expect to hear conservatives whine that the NY Times is making us all vulnerable to terrorists, and a bunch of arguments that sound high-minded, but which all end in the same place: if anyone publishes something a Republican White House doesn't want you to publish, Americans will die.

I swear, we're going to spend the next 40 years fixing this administration's mistakes AND fighting the legion of right-wing spinners who will spring up and say "but things are better now, so this means he was actually brilliant, and with hindsight we can see how he was the best president ever!"

as you may or may not recall, eliot abrams has been a member in good standing of the bush crime family since before his conviction as a felon during iran/contra.

it is truly astounding the level of reprehensibly, filthy, characters bush has around him, making decisions. abrams would be in a federal pen had not daddy bush pardoned him. now, he is something called the Deputy National Security Adviser for Global Democracy Strategy.

i would like to see what part of the article the crime family wants omitted... sometimes it is more interesting to see what worries them. one can then look at the full version and compare.

it is sort of like seeing the cheney hand-written underlinings and notes that he wrote on the joe wilson piece about the sixteen words...

If The New York Times were to publish the redacted segments, then Flynt Leverett would be the one who might take the heat for it, not The New York Times. That's my guess as to why they're not publishing it in full. Not an act of political cowardice on their part.

Yes it does. I'm not sure what you're asking me, though, because, maybe, you might not have noticed that the first paragraph of my comment was a quote from an earlier poster. I forgot to close the quote.

If you're asking if the NYT's is putting Leverett in a fix by posting where to find the redacted parts of what he and his wife have written, they aren't since it's on line for all to read who want to read it anyway.

And I forgot that it shows integrity to not leave contributing writers hung out to dry and to back them up -- witness AJR lending legal support to the freelance being sued by the Santa Barbara publisher. Although I am not sure what action this guy faces for a document cleared by CIA censors, referencing other material presumably cleared by CIA censors. By running the op-ed with the redacted material shown by black lines, the NYT is graphically shoving it in the face of every reader of the op-ed page that the administration is censoring info ONLY because it's embarrassing to the administration. This is so in character for this administration. It would be funny if it weren't so tragic. It could be a script right off Comedy Central. The problem, of course, is its real life with our nation being torn down from the inside. Far more tragically though, it exposes how thoroughly incompetent these fools are and invites just anybody to do pretty much as they please.

As an example, if you look at the U.S financial status in the global context you can see very readily that we are in deep trouble. While most other nations do everything possible to protect their currency and internal economies we just sell off everything that isn't nailed down and agree to trade terms that no normal thinking person would even consider. And its always because of an alternative and hidden justification that benefits politically friendly persons but pays zero consideration to what it actually does to the country and our economy. And forget about the notion that people need good jobs to get by in this economy. That isn't even a factor for the persons ripping us off. The things we are seeing right now will pale by comparison to what is coming in the global economic sense. It will be the f*** up of the century.

How is the NYT "ignoring" the White House with this piece? Yes, it is publishing the op-ed, but with the redactions in place. So it is not "ignoring", but rather "complying" with the White House.

The righteous move would have been to publish the piece without redactions, and then defend the piece in court, if need be. If what the NYT says is true, the court case would be a slam-dunk for them.

I read the Leverett/Mann Op-Ed in the NYT today, and I agree with the posters who think it should have been run redacted - with lineouts:

1. Leverett & Mann's piece, and its conclusions DO get published.

2. The inane "contoversy" over the censored bits gets more publicity for it (and the NYT).

3. The Administration look like idiots -admittedly a low bar to clear! - for trying to censor criticism of its Iran policy.

4. No rules are broken (and the Administration look like idiots).

If they had run it unredacted and if the White House takes them to court, then when the White House loses, then they could say it's simply a difference of opinion that the court case cleared up. By having redacted exactly what the White House asked them to redact and then pointing to other unclassified documents that relate those facts (with the pedigree of CIA vetting and declassification) then the NYT wins the case and sues for a frivolous lawsuit, thereby compounding the black eye for the administration, as well as reouping their expenses for the defense. Quite bright, I'd say.

I've read a lot about these camps, and they truly do exist. It makes me wonder what the gov't has in mind. Are these camps to imprison the Illegals? Maybe the Islamics? How about the liberals/political dissidents? Could be for anyone who doesn't agree with the administration. What exactly does the gov't have in mind? They can't be to imprison a chunk of the populace, as they aren't big enough and there aren't enough of them to be able to accomodate a large segment of the population. But, maybe, just maybe, they don't have to be. If enough folks see that the gov't is dragging citizens off in the middle of the night to these camps, everyone would start toeing the line, and that would be good enough, the camps will have served their purpose. This looks like a distinct possiblity to me. I am really curious about this subject and would be interested in hearing what other folks have to say about this subject. Whatever these camps are for, it can't be pretty...

Did the people who used the censor's pen have the authority to do so? Who else had a hand in this? Can we ask them why it was done when the material is clearly available publicly?

Those questions (and there are others, I'm sure) seem like the next logical step.

BushCo keeps following the same pattern.

Prior to their launching a preemptive attack on Iraq, they tried to downplay how members of BushCo during the 1980s Reagan administration had extensive contacts with Saddam Hussein's regime in Baghdad.

Now, they are trying to downplay the contacts BushCo had with Iran after the 9/11 attacks regarding Iranian cooperation with BushCo concerning Afghanistan.

Since the BushCo neo-con pattern never changes, this can only mean that BushCo is planning on preemptively attacking Iran shortly, plunging that area even deeper into the hellstrom of BushCo's making.

Hopefully, one of the first orders of business of the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress next week is the Democrats telling BushCo that only Congress has authority under the U.S. Constitution to declare and wage war, no matter what chimp-in-chief Bush thinks, or vice chump Cheney, or stark raving mad Gonzales.

First order of business. Congress reaffirming it's constitutional control over war declaring and war making. In this way, at least we'll know who the traitors are in Congress who support Bush, Cheney and Gonzales trashing our Constitution in pursuit of their warmongering, war-profiteering goals.
