GOP Silence Update: in Which the Fruitcake Begins to Slip from My Grasp

It's coming up on 2 p.m. and I'm starting to get worried. Will I know it's Christmastime at all?

A barrage of calls from our D.C. bureau to GOP lawmakers' offices, asking for a comment on Rep. Virgil Goode's intemperate remarks about Muslims, have yielded no solid results. I just finished striking out -- for the moment, at least -- with the Virginia GOP delegation.

Sen. George Allen: Hill office closed; state office closed.
Sen. John Warner: see earlier post.
Rep. JoAnn Davis: Left a message.
Rep. Thelma Drake: Hill office closed; district office closed.
Rep. Randy Forbes: Hill office closed; district office closed.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte: Spoke with press aide who promised to look into the matter.
Rep. Eric Cantor: Hill office closed; district office closed.
Rep. Frank Wolf: Left a message.
Rep. Tom Davis: Hill office closed; district office closed.

Call Rep. Mark Kirk of IL. He always claims he's a moderate.

Try Norm Coleman (R Mn). I think he's already made a statement about Ellison's swearing in.

I fully agree with Virgil Goode and have asked him to join my campaign staff. He will be a welcome addition to the fine group I have assembled so far.

hey, if a comment from any Republican member of Congress will get Josh off you back, try Lincoln Chafee....he still counts for another week or two, right?

Congressman Calvert's "home" office is closed and I was directed to voicemail. I explained that I was "very concerned" about Goode's "controversial statements" and that I would like someone to contact me as soon as possible.

BTW, I wasn't aware that Darrell Issa is actually Ken Calvert. I was calling directory assistance's number for Issa when I reached Calvert's voicemail. :)

I agree with Goode, is that what you wanted? What did he say that was wrong?

You can try Kirk but you'll probably be disappointed. For the last two years, I've repeatedly called his office as a constituent asking for his position on *major* upcoming votes and I'm always told that the Congressman hasn't decided yet. The other big excuse is that the person answering the phone is new and doesn't know. It's consistent that Kirk never knows how he feels about anything (except tax cuts, which is enthusiastically for). As a constituent, the only feedback I get from my questions is weeks after my call, when Kirk sends me a paper letter explaining why he voted Republican this last time. So what have I learned.

- Kirk doesn't know how he's going to vote (or won't say)
- He either makes up his mind (or receives marching orders) at the last minute
- He then sends his position via snail mail to his constituents

So I'd be real surprised if he took a call from TPM and gave a position.

Also, don't forget that Kirk had his own Muslim-meltdown a year or two ago when he came out full-force in favor of profiling. So he's probably content to stay out of this one.

Did you try Denny Hastert? Surely he's on the ball here in the last days of his Speakership???
