Best Friends Forever?

Just now on MSNBC, I saw Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) make his way over to introduce himself to Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA), whose back is to the camera. And that's Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) looking on as the Muslim-fearing Goode shakes hands with the House's first elected Muslim.

We'll probably be hearing more about how the introduction went later in the day.

Update: We'll have the video of this up soon.

Late Update: Here's the video:

What fun! Goode did *not* want to talk to Ellison. You can see the two white-haired dudes looking in the direction of the approaching Ellison and Kucinich. One of the white-haired dudes then positions himself to block. E & K then split up to counter the zone defense, and when they break through the other white-hair tries (or so it appears to my eye) to lead Goode away.

Now, are there any lipreaders who can figure out what was said?

Hilarious. Watch Moran sizing up the situation and realizing that Kucinich is leading Ellison in. He smirks briefly. Meanwhile, Kucinich moves to cover Goode's right flank in case he makes a break for it, while Moran sidles up to Goode and grabs his left arm as Ellison moves to the front of Goode. Goode has no choice but to stand and play kissy-face with Ellison, and then with Kucinich, who can't seem to control his urge to totally be in the moment. I think Ellison's picked up a lot of street cred over this whole thing.

Gotta love how quick Repubs are to spin Jefferson in his grave. There are a number of quotes from him indicating his specific belief that freedom of religion in this country extended to Islam. Upon encountering political disputes with Muslim nations, Jefferson responded by trying to learn more about their religion. By studying Islam as a religion and the history of Islamic nations' interaction with Christian European nations, American policy was shaped in dealing with these countries. We saw that there was a need to assure them that America's intentions were different from the European crusaders who had come before. That American was not founded as a Christian nation, but as one which respected all religions. Its impossible to fairly suggest that Jefferson saw Islam as a threat. Rather, he saw some Muslim nations as a geo-political threat, because they were.

No, unfortunately the Strib newspaper in Mpls. is a Democratic mouthpiece, and so white-washed Keith's multi-year association with the Nation of Islam (he "didn't know they were anti-Semitic, and quit when he found out" not the sharpest knife in the drawer there), his frequently delinquent taxes and traffic fines, his defense of known gang-bangers in Mpls., his defense of 70's terrorist Sara Olson, and defense of convicted cop killer Mumia. It’s also unfortunately true that self-loathing Jews who long for the destruction of Israel are not exactly unknown in the district Keith ran in. You could have run a convicted child rapist in this district, and if he hated Bush, supported abortion on demand, supported more taxes and bigger government,he would have still won. Easily.

Arnold says:

What you describe certainly exists, but it is a consequence of the the fact that neither party really has any interest in providing voters with the information they would need in order to make an educated assesment. Politics has descended into pure salesmanship (thanks for that, Ronald Reagan!) and represents a contest to decide who can concoct the grossest over-simplification of reality. Republicans have been particularly adept at this (though both parties are thoroughly guilty), but their recent, er, mishaps demonstrate that just because an argument is easily stated doesn't mean that it's right.

Elections are far more likely to hinge on slogans and emotional or religious appeal than on the actual content of a candidate's brain.

In 1786 Jefferson and Adams met with Ambassador Adja of Tripoli. Tripoli was part of the
Caliphate, the Ottoman Empire. Thus Adja's words represented the Caliphate, the unitary political, military, religious, and legal entity of Islam.

from Joshua Logan on Adja, Adams, Jefferson meeting

quote

These future United States presidents questioned the ambassador as to why his government was so hostile to the new American republic even though America had done nothing to provoke any such animosity. Ambassador Adja answered them, as they reported to the Continental Congress, “that it was founded on the Laws of their Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have acknowledged their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as Prisoners, and that every Musselman who should be slain in Battle was sure to go to Paradise.”

See Hugh Fitzgerald posts at Jihadwatch.org on John Quincy Adams, search John Quincy Adams site:jihadwatch.org

Verse of the Sword 9:5

slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush.

end quote

bin Laden's Fatwa 1998

quote

On that basis, and in compliance with God's order, we issue the following fatwa to all Muslims:

The ruling to kill the Americans and their allies -- civilians and military -- is an individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible to do it,

end quote

The Koran Verse of the Sword, Adja's statement and bin Laden's Fatwa 1998 all use parallel language. Adja, as the representative of the Caliph said clearly that it was written in the Koran that Islam was at war with the United States, because the US had not submitted to the authority of Islam.

Jefferson and Adams were good lawyers, writers of the Declaration of Independence, and skilled ambassadors. They got down every key element of Adja's statement.

The war we are in now, and the wars in every century of the existence of the United States are because we have not submitted to the authority of Islam as stated to our ambassadors by the ambassador and representative of the Caliph, the supreme authority of Islam, a single unitary religious, military, political and legal entity.

Based in this, Jefferson and Adams fought the war the Barbary Pirates and thus the Caliphate and thus Islam were waging on the United States as an entity. According to Adja that comes from our not submitting to Islam and that this is the Law of the Prophet and written in the Koran. That is according to the Jefferson Adams report, an official document of the United States government.

Based on Adja's statements, the reason for that state of war have never changed, because the US has never submitted to Islam. Therefore the statement of the Caliph's representative is still binding and places Islam in a state of declared war with the United States. This comes from the Koran according the representative of the Caliph, the supreme authority of Islam stated to the Ambassadors of the United States, Jefferson and Adams.

This was is therefore still in effect. Therefore no person should take an oath on the Koran in the United States for any purpose.

My security code is clean.

Now if only the next Democratic President in '08 would make his first official act handing over Bush, Cheney and Rummie to the Hague, by way of say 2 weeks of towel party treatment at Gitmo along the way to the Netherlands, maybe we'd get somewhere. Who wouldn't love seeing Cheney have to stand for 48 hours straight? I bet they'd all wet their pants at the idea of having to go before the World Court. Even more so if we flew them there in their proverbial One World Government black helicopters.

Heh. These people are morons. Let's really start having fun with them.

I am always disappointed when reading political discussion online as it so frequently evolves into name calling and just plain vulgar language. It is no wonder we can not resolve so many important issues in a civil compromising maner.

To better understand Ellison
Keith Ellison from 4 Jan Washington Post:

In America today, we are encouraged to believe in the myth of scarcity - that there just isn't enough - of anything. But in the story of the miracle of the loaves and fishes, Jesus, who the Muslims call Isa, found himself preaching to 5000 (not including the women by the way) at dinner time, and there didn’t appear to be enough food. The disciples said that there were only five barley loaves and two fish. We just have to send them away hungry. We simply don't have enough. But Jesus took the loaves and the fish and started sharing food. There was enough for everyone. There was more than enough. What was perceived as scarcity was illusory as long as there was sharing, and not hoarding.

Rampant ignorance here. The bigots are pretty desperate to see some sort of threat, either in Ellison's religious affiliation or in his swearing his oath on the Koran.

If the whole point of the Bible commonly used for swearing-in is a binding oath, why do we fear a religious candidate's using the text he most reveres? Do we believe that an oath taken on a bible would somehow be more binding on a Muslim?

No, the monkeys chatter in fear of The Other, frightened by the thought of a world in which their faith does not reign supreme everywhere.

Bigots. Ellison's use of Jefferson's Koran was a brilliant way to show how ridiculous that hate is.

A Muslim American wrote on January 5, 2007 9:51 AM:

In 1797, six years after the adoption of the Bill of Rights, the United States government signed a treaty with the Muslim nation of Tripoli that contained the following statement (numbered Article 11 in the treaty):

As the Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the law, religion or tranquility of Musselmen; and as the states never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mohometan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinion shall ever produce an interruption of harmony existing between the two countries.

The treaty was approved by President John Adams and his Secretary of State Timothy Pickering, and was then ratified by the Senate without objection.

Shahed wrote on January 5, 2007 11:10 AM:

Also....

The United States (represented by Thomas Jefferson) signed a treaty in 1786 with Islamic Morocco (the first country to recognize the United States upon independence, BTW) to protect shipping lines and assert the friendship between the US and Morocco.

It remains, to this day, the oldest unbroken treaty ever signed by the US.

On the one hand, there is this deception around the world that Islam is a religion of peace, but Islam calls itself the Religion of the Sword or in Arabic "Din e-seif". No Arabic speaking Moslem will deny this. Allah al-Ilahi is the moon god, the sword god and the war god. The god Allah is "greater" than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, who is considered a weak, sissy love and peace God. Their god, Allah, is the macho sword and war god. This is the true meaning of the Moslem call to prayer "Allahu Akbar" or Allah is greater, greater than the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Avi Lipkin, alias Victor Mordecai, has spoken to numerous churches, synagogues and civic groups (including radio and TV appearances). He offers compelling proof that the fanaticism of Islam is the number one threat to world peace today!

Another interpretation of video: a bunch of busy people saying hello. Probably the only other clear thing that can be known is that Kucinich's hand on Ellison's shoulder is a true gesture of warmth, the rest is pretty standard stuff. Kucinich is a true uniting voice in America, a good reason for the world to not hate all of us, and a good reason for Americans to have hope that we'll get out of Iraq with a meaningful peace.

It's funny to see the clown posting above trying to equate Conyers and Jefferson to the continuing crumbling gang of crooks on the right. No one who does wrong should be allowed to get away with it.
However, if you had to line-up names side by side, it's about 10-1, crooks on the right favored. There are still a large number of them under investigation, including the last speaker. He's mixed up in land deals, near highways.

The corruption of the Clinton and Bush admins is not all in yet. When more of it comes out, we may find that for each it exceeds what is known so far for both combined. Moreover, it may turn out that some of the Bush team knew about things during the Clinton term.

It may come out that all 3 branches and both administrations and both parties knew in the 1990's and know now more than they let on, and that foreign countries like Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and others were aware of info on this from early in the Clinton admin to now. This is just speculation. You can see a discussion of a hypothesis about this at the link at the Old Atlantic name.

Ah, yes, let's bring it back to Clinton. Totally sat on his ass, while the Republican administrations governing for the previous twelve years showed a demonstrably robust & offensive (in the "action" sense of the word) response to radical Islam & terrorist activities activities against the U.S.

Where do folks get this stuff?

P.S. I'd be interested in asking 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers what they thought about Reagan's manly actions in the wake of a certain terrible day in Beruit. But what, the hey, we can't because they're all dead...

Why is it that Right wing conservatives are unable to hold a decent intellectual discussion? Why do they resort to name calling and insults every time? It seems like when they are clearly not making sense, they come up with these out of the blue references to Islam (which are false) to somehow prove their point. I'm sorry but you guys (i.e. conservative republicans) seem pretty dumb to me. You remind me of people who have no intellectual thought process, you don't even represent the true Christian beliefs as I've met sensible Christians as well.

I wandered by because I heard that there was an interesting video posted, and I posted a pro-kucinich note above. You can meet others who share your view at kucinich.us There's also plenty of space there for folks to post hate messages, just as we see here, but they quickly get bored and leave because we're working together for positive change.
