Dems to AG: How Many Prosecutors Have You Pushed Out?

At an oversight hearing this morning, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) grilled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales over the sudden departure of several U.S. Attorneys at the administration's request.

"How many U.S. Attorneys have been asked to resign in the past year?" Feinstein asked Gonzales.

"You're asking me to get into a public discussion" of personnel issues, Gonzales replied.

"I'm asking you to give me a number."

"I don't know the answer to that question," said Gonzales.

"You didn't know the answer when we spoke on Tuesday, but you said you would find out," Feinstein pressed.

Gonzales referred to a letter his office had sent Feinstein earlier in the week on the issue.

"I read the letter," Feinstein shot back. Gonzales denied the administration had any tricks up its sleeve and was only trying to do what was best.

"Do you deny that your office has asked U.S. Attorneys to resign in the past year?" Feinstein asked.

"I don't deny that," Gonzales said. "But that happens in every administration, during different periods for different reasons. . . Some people should view that as a sign of good management."

Questions from the panel moved on to other subjects, and perhaps Gonzales thought he was off the hook. Then Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) spoke up.

"If we take a break for lunch," Leahy asked him, "would it be possible to get the number Sen. Feinstein asked for?"

Gonzales fished around for an answer, and finally answered, "I think so." But then he said he couldn't get into a public discussion of personnel matters.

"I don't care about the people," Leahy shot back. "Just get us the numbers."

Gonzales should actually be easy to impeach compared to Bush and Cheney. He is the chief law enforcement officer and there are numerous examples, habeus corpus, warrantless wiretapping, this potential abuse of power cover up to nail him specifically.

Actually, he should be impeached for his actions. He is a criminal. I know this language is impolite, but does anybody really dispute it in the reality based world?

Presidential pardons don't override EVERYTHING. For example, they don't override INTERNATIONAL WAR CRIMES TRIALS, like the ones that have already been suggested in Spain.

I just tuned back in and heard some Senator, whom I didn't recognize, asking Gonzales about who could compel answers from him and whether the chairman could, or words to that effect. What was that all about? It sounded a bit tense, as if this Senator was getting pissed about Gonzales and his refusal to answer the tough questions.

The hearing ended very abruptly about a half hour after the lunch break. I thought there was either a bomb threat or the Senators were going to be arrested by bush. People on the Democratic Underground thread following the hearings were at a loss as to why the hearings ended so quickly. I don't think Gonzo was even asked for the number. No one is commenting on the very strange and abrupt end of this hearing.

CSPAN did not cover it LIVE as they are required to do under their charter to provide gavel to gavel coverage and one poster thought this was deliberate. Any further info on why Leahy adjourned so quickly would be appreciated. Has anyone seen our Congresspersons since the 2:38 pm adjournment of this hearing?

Unfortunately, I doubt we can count on Congress -- Dem or Repub -- to impeach anybody, especially the Bush or Cheney, until they hear the call loud enough from the American people like during Nixon. People were in the streets almost nonstop.

Thinks have changed but it still wouldn't take much. An ongoing coordinated effort of a couple-dozen protestors at every district office of every member of Congress, ten hours per day for a few weeks would probably be enough to get the wheels solidly in motion.

Saul Alinsky reminds that one must pick one's target carfully -- not too big so as to be too difficult to topple, and not to small so as to appear as an insignificant victory. Ashcroft and Gonzalez seem appropriate.

Once the can is open and the worms start slithering, the rats will start to squeel and entire Bush/Cheney team wont have anywhere to hide.
