Ex-Interior Official, Abramoff Investigation Target, Leaves Lobbying Firm

It looks like J. Steven Griles, formerly the #2 at the Interior Department is a full-time target now.

The Washington Post reported last week that Justice Department prosecutors had notified him that he was a target of the Jack Abramoff investigation -- usually a sign that an indictment is coming down the pike -- and now Legal Times reports that he left his lobbying gig the same day. His firm's website is also down (though maybe it's just a coincidence); Griles was one of three partners at the firm.

The Times adds: "A source with knowledge of the investigation says prosecutors are exploring whether to charge Griles with lying to Congress and honest-services fraud." It would seem to be just a matter of time.

Prominent Republicans Join The Lundquist Group
George Nethercuttt and Steve Griles join forces with Andrew Lundquist

(Washington, D.C.) January 31, 2005 – Former Congressman George R. Nethercuttt, Jr. and former U.S. Department of the Interior Deputy Secretary J. Steven Griles are joining The Lundquist Group, LLC headed by former White House national energy policy director Andrew D. Lundquist. The Lundquist Group, LLC will be renamed Lundquist, Nethercuttt & Griles LLC. The firm will continue to be located in Washington, D.C.

With extensive business, Congressional and Executive Branch experience, Lundquist, Nethercuttt & Griles LLC will provide strategic and government relations guidance to the private sector.

“As a Member of Congress, I worked to strengthen partnerships with the federal government for businesses, universities and non-profit organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest. In my role on the House Defense, Agriculture and Interior subcommittees, I worked on a host of national issues,” Nethercuttt said. “By joining with Steve and Andrew, I am able to combine my legislative expertise with their executive branch experience to continue to work on the national and Northwest issues I care about.”

“Our differing backgrounds complement each other, and working as a team we can cover a broad range of complex national and international issues, including agriculture, defense, energy, financial services, mining, natural resources, and telecommunications” said Steve Griles.

“I am honored and pleased that George Nethercuttt and Steve Griles have agreed to join forces with me. They have a great depth of experience and knowledge. Together we will make a great team,” said Andrew Lundquist.

He served for a decade on the Committee on Appropriations, and its subcommittees on Agriculture, Interior and Defense. He was also on the Science Committee’s subcommittee on Space & Aeronautics, as well as its subcommittee on Energy. As Vice Chairman of the Defense Subcommittee, Mr. Nethercuttt worked on preparing America's military for changing defense needs, homeland security, and the War on Terrorism.

J. Steven Griles, served as the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior since 2001. As the chief operating officer for Secretary Gale Norton, he managed the day-to-day activities of the department and shared the duties of setting and implementing policy. During the Reagan Administration he served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Lands and Minerals Management. Between his years of Federal service, he was in the private sector both as a consultant and as a Senior Vice President of a diversified company with interests in oil, natural gas, coal and other ventures.

Nethercuttt and Griles will join Lundquist and the others currently at The Lundquist Group including Vice President Howard Useem who manages the firm’s energy practice and Vice President Tim Kurth, who manages the firm’s telecommunications, technology and financial services practice.

Lundquist, Nethercuttt & Griles LLC will be located at 101 Constitution Avenue, NW, Suite 525 East Washington, DC 20001, the current location of The Lundquist Group, LLC (202) 589-0015.
