Bob Ney: Victim of the Man?

Journalist Ellen Ratner, writing on Rep. Bob Ney's (R-OH) behalf to the judge who will sentence him, reports on her conversations with the "many" lawmakers who "would like to support former Congressman Ney, but because of the political climate in Washington, they dare not."

One jewel in particular (read the full letter here):

One of the members I spoke with told me how much then-Congressmen Ney had cared, and how other members of Congress had done far worse things. That member told me that those members are getting off with fines and so forth, but Congressman Ney did not act in lockstep. His voting in congress angered the powers that be in the majority, and he is paying for it unfairly. [Her emphasis]

Hard to know where to start here. But I'll settle with the image of Ney stuffing his pockets with gambling chips in a London casino, a bribe from a Syrian businessman known as "The Fat Man."

He's not THAT bad, your honor. HE only sold HALF of is soul.

Who are the "powers that be" that Ney supposedly took on, unlike his colleagues? Is there any basis to this claim? (Not that if the answer is yes that excuses him of anything. I'm just curious.)

A journalist? She should be fired immediately. What a disgrace to the profession.

And lets keep in mind his misdeeds were so egregious as to get him convicted in OHIO where republican cronyism is a fact of life.

You know, this seems to have been the standard right wing response to their leaders being caught since Nixon (or maybe even before- I don't know). When I was growing up (in a red state) I don't know how many times I was told by friend's parents (and my own) that the Democrats did everything Nixon did, but only Nixon got caught. (Wow- who knew Humphrey and McGovern had a burglary team and an enemies list?)

At the time, I bought it. Now, it seems like a weird psychological projection-thing that seems to pervade right-wing folks. When they can't defend their own, they reason around it by projecting even bigger misdeeds onto others.

Dude is she sleeping with Ney? I have no idea who this woman works for but they need to fire her now. Can a judge hold someone in comtempt for submitting a letter filled with bald faced lies.

Redshift wrote on January 18, 2007 4:37 PM:

It's even worse than that -- they'll say they had to use these underhanded or illegal tactics, because everyone knows the Democrats are doing it (even though they have no evidence), and if they didn't, then those bad guys would win. So they're the good guys, really!

Then he needs to offer them up and help right the wrongs he and his party have done to this country (and are still doing). Otherwise, the traitor needs to just STFU. He had his chance.

Ney's crimes indicate a pattern of corruption over time and I doubt that he was convicted of every crime he ever committed. Ney was in charge of spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars after 9/11 in connection with Capitol security. But how was Ney paid off?

I'd like to know more about the house in Thessaliniki (which is properly spelled Thessaloniki), Greece that Ney's wife supposedly inherited from her father. In 2005, Ney began reporting rental income between $15k and $50k from the house which Ney valued at between $100k and $250k.

Did the prosecutors verify that Ney's father-in-law actually owned a house in Thessaloniki in 1999? What was the appraised vlaue then? Has anyone seen photos of the house? Were any improvements made by the Neys in the last seven years?

Why did the Neys wait until 2005 to rent it? Who is the tenant? Is the rent at fair market value?
Do the Neys have bank accounts in Greece?

Ney maintained the he did not have to declare the value of the house before 2005 because the house did not generate income. Do the Neys own other property that fit this description in Greece or elsewhere?

The municipality of Thessalonikis maintains a website but I can't read Greek so I don't know if property records are available online. Can anyone give a hand here?

My guess is that Ney only declared the value of the house and the rental income because he was already under investigation when he submitted his 2005 personal financial disclosure report on May 15, 2006.

I nominate Mrs Pantstreppon to sit as chairman on any NEW committee that is charged with looking into Bush's lawlessness...especially, I'd like to see her? get a chance to chair another committee investigating the Bush foul-ups leading up to 9/11.

Don't know if she still does it, but she used to represent the "liberal" side on Fox in debates with Jim Pinkerton.

Wow, from now on I am going to be more careful about reading things on TPM right after dinner. That letter made me ill. To think that she would put that claptrap crap on paper to the same judge that has fully read the charges tha Ney plead guilty to, thinking that it would shed light on his real character. The saddest part is that she probably believes her own BS.

GoodJob wrote on January 19, 2007 12:21 AM:

Good journalist that she is, I am sure she will be exposing all this corruption with names and details. Looks like another round of head to roll?

I hear poor George Bush is experiencing some personal anguish over his unpopularity too. maybe ratner could organize a collective to cheer him up with a FTD florist bouquet and an "I Ran Through Hell" coffee mug.

Richard L. Adlof wrote on January 19, 2007 9:50 AM:

Ney and his ilk should all shut their collective faces and take whatever comes their way like the men they are . . . Oh that's correct, they are whiny white-collar crminals who are ticked off that they got caught AND that the government they worked so hard to destroy by selling off piece by piece is actually still able to do its job . . .

If it were up to me to set their terms in their new 'offices,' I start with 'a buck a day' and add a week each time they whine about it.

Betraying the United States and ones electoriate should hurt. Perhaps now that Ney is sober that point will not be lost on him like his ethics were so clearly were.

Mrs Panstreppon wrote on January 19, 2007 10:42 AM:

I am still working out how the Neys got the house in Thessaloniki. Ney married Elizabeth P. Mikropoulos in June 2001 and Ney praised Christine Irene Mikropoulos on the House floor in 2004.

There are about five people named Mikropoulos in Ohio and they all live in Warren. If these Mikropouloses are related to Ney's wife, why did she get the house and not the others?
