BREAKING: Ney Sentenced to 30 Months

A judge has just sentenced Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) to 30 months. Prosecutors had recommended a 29 month sentence.

According to Fox News, the judge is sending him to a federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia.

More soon.

Update: From the AP:

When he is released, the judge said, Ney will serve another two years on probation and pay a $6,000 fine. She also ordered him into a prison alcohol rehabilitation program for treatment of a drinking problem he has acknowledged in recent months.

The sentence was harsher than recommended by prosecutors or Ney's lawyers, Huvelle said, because Ney had violated the trust place on him as a public official. "Both your constituents and the public trusted you to represent them honestly," she said.

A man who steals a sixpack of beer can get that much time. But I guess it's different if you're on the take big time and wear a white collar.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

That would be a black man..that gets the max for a six pack. White collar helps but white skin is a bigger plus.

Oh I think Mr. Ney won't see it as a light sentence.

My advice to Bob: BYOKY (bring your own KY).

Under day per grand stolen with time off for screwing the public trust into the dirt and maligning the good name of alcoholics everywhere . . . Such a deal!

The 'Bob-sters' planned stay on the government dole is only two hundred and fifty years short by my recogning . . .

As was pointed out in a comment I read earlier ... the magic elixir of crime prevention at this level of our culture is necessarily serious consequences at serious institutions. Sentences suited to the level of criminal behavior, at facilities intended to punish and rehabilitate.

So, when can we expect charges in the Pentagon "money-laundering" case?

Defense official says Pentagon hid unspent funds in accounts

By Matt Kelley, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has hidden at least $1.4 billion in other agencies' accounts instead of returning unspent money to the U.S. Treasury, the Defense Department's internal watchdog told Congress Wednesday.

Thomas Gimble, the Pentagon's acting inspector general, said Pentagon offices between 2002 and 2005 used the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Interior Department "to 'park' or 'bank' funds that were expiring."

GSA and Interior then spent the money on Pentagon contracts, circumventing the law, Gimble said.

And when Ney gets out, he's gets a full House retirement plan, plus 100 percent medical benefits until the day that scumbag dies.

Somewhat frustrating.

Nye should be made an example by throwing the book at him and then having him do hard time in the general lockup, just like some other unsuccessful criminal.

Putting Nye in the general lockup would be appropriate and would provide an immediate impact on congressional ethics reform.
