Blog: Prosecutor Called Firing "Political Fragging"

As both The New York Times and The Washington Post have reported, a number of the federal prosecutors who were fired in December had initially decided to go quietly... until, that is, the Justice Department declared publicly that they had been fired for performance issues. They didn't like that one bit.

One of those angry prosecutors, apparently, is David Iglesias, the U.S. Attorney for New Mexico. According to Joe Monohan, a political consultant and blogger, Iglesias wrote in an email to a friend that his firing was a "political fragging." From the email, excerpted on Monohan's blog:

This is a political fragging, pure and simple. I'm OK with being asked to move on for political reasons, I'm NOT OK with the Department of Justice wrongfully testifying under oath to the Senate Judiciary Committee that I had performance issues...

Iglesias, who was nominated by Bush in 2001, elaborated on his office's accomplishments in the email, according to Monohan, citing "reams of performance stats." And, well, apparently the Justice Department agreed with Iglesias, because he was one of the ousted prosecutors who received a favorable evaluation.

Norm Cairns, a spokesman for the New Mexico U.S. Attorney's Office, had no comment on the email.

But maybe we'll hear this straight from the horse's mouth tomorrow morning. Iglesias has scheduled a press conference, his last day on the job. The purpose: to "discuss his resignation and plans for the future," according to a press advisory.

So, when will the Democratic House or Senate get off their duffs and hire these former prosecutors to continue their investigations?

Dennis wrote on February 27, 2007 3:33 PM:

Whether it's the current crisis in Iraq or lies leading up to that invasion, investigations of corruption leading to the White House, or federal attorneys fired for whatever reasons, the democrats have forgotton how to play the game.

It's obvious they don't have their act together. And that's a little scary considering that they stand a good chance of winning the White House.

You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

mbbsdphil wrote on February 27, 2007 3:46 PM:

Falsely testifying under oath, to a Congressional committee or anyone else, is a serious felony that Senator Feinstein should look into.

The fired US Attorneys, let's remember, were all Bush appointees. Mr. Bush had to have blatantly pissed on them to draw this public ire.

Allegations of wrongful dismissal, by the way, especially in such a highly public position, could taint otherwise stellar careers for life. I guess outing Valerie Plame was just the warm-up for this White House.

JohnW wrote on February 27, 2007 4:05 PM:

Its not good to get this made public right now, it will give the Bush gang time to get to Iglesias before his press conference. Let see if he says his comment was taken out of context tomorrow

mbbsdphil wrote on February 27, 2007 4:08 PM:

Johann, excellent point. Senate and House committees and the GAO should immediately hire these former prosecutors. They have the skills, management talent, and process knowledge to lead the necessary investigations. I bet even Ms. Lam could be pried loose from her corporate perch for that.

Hizzoner wrote on February 27, 2007 4:33 PM:

A "political fragging." Now that's what I call a good metaphor.

Is is feasible, likely, that the Senate or GAO will hire these guys? It could sure make for some savory revenge, a dish best enjoyed cold as they say.

And they're all Bushevik appointees are they?

Let's hope what goes 'round comes 'round on this one.

Legalize wrote on February 27, 2007 5:08 PM:

If he is telling the truth, whomever testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee is guilty of a crime. He can not be gagged if his testimony falls within the perview of "whistle-blowing." I would think that testimony about DOJ officials proffering potentially perjurous testimony before the Senate would fall into that category.

powkat wrote on February 27, 2007 6:21 PM:

And once again the Bush gang throws their own people overboard. How many times can they do this before even the 30% stop believing? I hope these attorneys go public and rip this so-called Justice Department wide open. Gonzales twisting in the wind would be a sight to gladden the heart of any patriot.

Stephen wrote on February 27, 2007 6:48 PM:

Curiously, Iglesias was also involved in a high-profile corruption case, but one involving the Democrat state treasurer. Despite a videotape showing the alleged bagman (who copped a plea and testified against the treasurer) handing over $10,000 in cash, and despite the former treasurer also copping a plea, Iglesias was only able to convict the treasure on one count of trying to use his influence to get a wife's friend a job.

mbbsdphil wrote on February 27, 2007 8:39 PM:

By the way, "fragging" is intentionally killing a soldier, often an officer, on your own side. See, Platoon, last scene but one. "Fragging" comes from a common method for making the kill, using a fragmentation grenade. That made it hard to prove it was "friendly" fire.

An officer would be fragged not just for being incompetent - an allegation made against the stupid and the green - but for repeatedly and unnecessarily killing a lot of his men for no proportionate gain. Like making repetitive frontal assaults against a fortified position in daylight, quickly filling body bags, when making a detour, a flanking or night attack or other deception, or calling in a few rounds of artillery, might have quickly achieved the objective for few or no losses.

That sort of fragging required a considerable build up and rationalization that it was justifiable homicide.

Sometimes fragging was just murder, execution, payback, hidden in the fog of battle. That's the analogy the US Attorney is making. Killing one of your own for no reason other than you can, and can get away with it. Kaboom.

Al in Austex wrote on February 27, 2007 9:42 PM:

Ok ,the fraggings also would occur in Indo China because it could be a very good way to stop corruption and abuse from being discovered and punished.
So here's a question- Could these USA "political fraggings " be linked to criminal organized enterprises , that are in turned linked to corrupt Congressman such as the Dukester. There appearsto be a common thread here, the Foggo charges , the earmarks , the unaccounted for monies in Iraq potentially being used to fund illegal covert ops in Lebanon and elsewhere. This smells like the Contras all over again - anybody put Otto Reich under oath lately ?Maybe Legalise can tell us if this could all lead to one big RICO investigation ?
Maybe the Republicans ARE killing some of their own to protect Cheney's & Addington's walk on the Dark Side ,,,what do you think mmbbsdphil?

Richard L. Adlof wrote on February 27, 2007 10:28 PM:

If I'm reading this correctly . . . The Administration pissed off a bunch really good attorneys. If one was an attorney who was legally wronged . . .

Extradite Rumsfeld wrote on February 28, 2007 1:56 AM:

Al in Austex - please. What do you THINK this is all about?

The entire war from the getgo has been one giant war-profiteering venture. The money may be going to finance other illegal covert ops. Or it could be going into swiss bank accounts. Or it could be in reserve for future market manipulations. Or even manipulations of democratic elections. (given the skanky financing we've already seen out of DeLay - I'd say that's the most obvious likelihood).

And the Democrats are standing there, staring into the headlights, not even blinking.

Al in Austex wrote on February 28, 2007 5:43 AM:

Hello Extradite,,
Its all about the money to fund any number of illegal & undemocratic activities. But before I am ready to be overly critical of the Democratic Response to the NeoCon Thuggery & Buggery I am going to give some of the newbies re Senator Webb a chance to confront and challenge all these "perfect little neocon brown shirts " about "all this stuff " .Remember Sen Webb was SecDef for Reagan. Also Sen Warner is sounding the alarm about a broken military. Finally, see the TPM post about the deal Pelosi just struck with the Dukster's Prosecutors re Congressional evidence.(Pelosi is more Sparrow Point in her politics then Larkspur-she is a very savvy And tough operator).
Look we are , all of us , very concerned about the Bushies, so much so perhaps I predict we will see comity florish (see Howard Baker & President I-am not -a- crook ) and we all stand by each other to defend the Republic.
Meanwhile I haveonce again renewed my membership in Amnesty International & The NRA .
PS Don't despair Delay and company are destroyed poltically in Texas , and may very well wind up in Jail.
And the court action against Rummy proceeds apace in Germany - Gen Karpinski is busy in that court testimony ratting them all out for Abu Gharib ( including Feith , Addington ,Cambone ) .

Al in Austex wrote on February 28, 2007 5:57 AM:

Oops in my last post I made an error - Sen Jim Webb Va was the Navy Secretary for Reagan ,not his Secretary of Defense. But still he may very well wind up being our Howard Baker taking that long walk up the driveway at the White House- Even David Brooks (another despondent neo con pundit ) says somebody from the Republicans side has to make that walk.

Bush's Commissariat
(cognitorex blogspot )
Re: "Purge"
"Experts see a continuing pattern that began long ago: A Bush White House seizing greater executive power to the detriment of democratic principle."
Today's executive branch more closely resembles a Communist form of government than a form espousing democratic ideals.
The Bush style, motivation and form of government continues to appear modeled on establishing a Commissariat.
Place a commissar, (an official in any communist government whose duties include political indoctrination, detection of political deviation, etc.), at the head of as many agencies and functions as is possible.
The product of America's science agencies is vetted and amended by commissars. Now, after a massive firing of well qualified but politically suspect U.S. Attorney Generals, justice will be need be blessed by Bush's commissariat.
Under communism, reality is what the commissariat says is reality. In terms of business management, the marketing division takes control of the corporation. Sales may be plummeting, the engineering division in total disarray, financial resources hemorrhaging and investor confidence at an all time low but, but by controlling all public relations' releases, the CEO is free to promulgate a false reality.
I was once invited to participate in a boar hunt in Eastern Europe. I asked my prospective host; "if under communism all citizens are equal how does one rationalize that a peasant class would be beating the woods while we sat with shiny loaded weapons waiting for the boars to appear?"
He smiled and said, "ah, under communism some citizens are simply more equal than others."
The 'have' class allied to Bush feel entitled to lead America. If controlling the message that emanates from America's government branches and agencies includes elevating political imagery to primary goal status, uncircumscribed by truth, then establishing a network of inexperienced, hack commissar-like appointees is the way to go.
My gut screams that a massive exercise of the citizens right to assemble will be required, braving dogs and hoses if need be, before this commissariat executive power grab will be broken and a pluralistic democracy reinstated.
