Ensign: Still Angry

In a press conference this afternoon, Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) continued to express exasperation at the Justice Department's firing of his nominee, U.S. Attorney for Nevada, Daniel Bogden.

He said that the attorney general "completely mishandled" the replacement of the prosecutors. But should he resign? Well...

QUESTION: Should the attorney general step down?

ENSIGN: Mistakes were made and changes need to be made in processes. Those changes are being made. And I believe that if we can come out of this with a better system that America will be better off for that.

And so the attorney general is taking steps. They have admitted the mistake to me that they made as far as the process was concerned. And as long as they are taking those steps and as long as folks follow through with what they said, I think that I will be satisfied.

QUESTION: It sounds as if you believe that the deputy attorney general (OFF-MIKE) in January either accidentally or intentionally mislead.

ENSIGN: The deputy attorney general -- the conversations that I had -- he was either ill-informed of the whole process or intentionally misled, one of the two....

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE) do you continue to have confidence in Attorney General Gonzales' ability to be in charge over this?

ENSIGN: I want to see how the attorney general leads the Justice Department in this time of crisis. He is presented with a very difficult challenge now.

I want to see if he's wiling to make the changes that are necessary at the Department of Justice because things have been handled poorly up to this point.

Ensign's the NRSC chair for the 08 cycle. I doubt he's going to call for Gonzales's resignation.

Interesting... (from Mr. Sampson's email dated Dec. 19th):

"The only thing really at risk here is a repeal of the AG's appointment authority. We inted to have DOJ leg affairs people on notice to work hard to preserve this (House members won't care about this; all we really need is for one Senator to object to language being added to legislative vehicles that are moving through). There is some risk that we'll lose the authority, but if we don't ever exercise it then what's the point of having it? (I'm not 100 percent sure that Tim was the guy on which to test drive this authority but know that getting him appointed was important to Harriet, Karl, etc.)"

So Kyl's the Senator, but what was the main goal of the policy? Were they really just after the power to appoint USAs at will, or was there something else behind it?

so feigned anger at replacing his man ut the politicizing of lthe DOJ is OK if a few changes are made. Sounds like a run of the mill bush ass licker to me. Seems as if none of these idiots realize that in 2008 there is a very good chance of a dem president with the ability to replace all the bush appointed frauds with some real prosecutors and then maybe we will see some cleansing actions taking place.

Digby had a post about a week ago about how, when Republicans are in power, the Fed becomes something of a science lab for all sorts of whacky policies. I tend to agree, although I suspect that more often than not baser motives are involved. I think Ensign is playing his role -- get Republicans on both sides of the issue, then squeeze towards the "middle", which is preservation of the "status quo". Remember, the whole point right now is to preserve the AG's power to appoint USAs without Senate approval. That's the ball. They will do whatever they can to protect it.

So, am I to believe we have a Republican, a putative Conservative, advocating for a bureaucracy to solve its own problems?

What so you suppose they have on Ensign that made him change his mind? Sex, money, drugs?

Time for a chorus of Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Sen. Ensign is trying to do a "Specter". Not the James Bond institutional villain, the Senate Judiciary Committee minority head. Ensign is trying to appear valiantly opposed to these acts. But like Gonzales himself, he intends no consequences should flow from his words, certainly not Gonzales' or other resignations.

I especially like Gonzales' statement to the effect that "somebody screwed up, and I'll get them". I assume he's read the comic strip that speaks of having met the enemy, and they are us.

Mr. Gonzales topped his speech today with a naked plea for undeserved sympathy: he had met many challenges in life, he said - implying racial or ethnic discrimination - and that he was a success because he kept on truckin'. The sympathy is not warranted because Mr. Gonzales has consistently and nakedly represented Mr. Bush, never the people of the United States.

What a phony ensign is. Geeze, listen to him talk out both sides of his mouth, or more like both sides of his digestive tract.

From one end he's outraged, outraged I tell you! On the other hand, he's perfectly willing to roll over and accept business as usual if he can. Doesn't want to offend anyone at the WH.

I hate to stoop to as hominems, but geeze, look at the guy! He looks like Jim Carey doing his best liar's smirk and hairdoo. It's like closeted Reverend Ted Haggard and his psychotic liars smile. Or Tom Delay and his liar's smirk. While you can't usually judge a book by the cover... well it just amazes me.

Yeah, by the voters who elected these compulsive liars.

" I especially like Gonzales' statement to the effect that "somebody screwed up, and I'll get them". I assume he's read the comic strip that speaks of having met the enemy, and they are us. "

What else is new? Isn't this like when the OVP's office created the Office of Special Plans in the Pentagon to cherry pick WMD intel, and then blamed Tenet for the slam dunk comment, as though he was pushing WMD and not the other way around. He took the fall, even got a medal for it. And the Administration and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress went on, business as usual. Countless other examples.

What's new? Oh that's right, we actually have an opposition Congress, and not a Rubber Stamp for a change. Oh, and Tom Delay and Abramoff were busted, by some members of the DoJ who weren't completely blind.

So now the Republicans are outraged, and going to get to the bottom of all this. Outraged I tell you! Right.

Jesus. What a weasel this guy is.

Gonzalez has a "difficult challenge" to spin his way out of his blatant lies, on record, which Ensign is well aware of!

But apparently Ensign respects survivors. If Gonzalez can manage to weasel out of this and find a fall guy, well he'll have Ensign's respect again.

So let me get this straight, if you create a scandle, then lie about it to Congress - that is the time to prove yourself?!? He wants to see how he handles this 'crisis?'

If he does well does he get Rove's job?
