Snow on Gonzales: "We Hope He Stays"

From this morning's press gaggle with Tony Snow.

Q: Does the White House feel, at this point, that it knows everything it needs to know about Gonzales to decide whether he should remain in office? Or are you still fact-gathering?

SNOW: The president's said he's got confidence in Al Gonzales. This is not fact-gathering on whether to allow him to maintain his employment. We hope he stays.

Q: He will remain in office for the rest of the administration?

SNOW: Well, we hope so.

That must mean that he's out.

white house = liars club

does anyone, really, believe a word that Tony Snow says, or Bush, or Condi, or Gonzo?

Now there's a ringing endorsement, if there ever was one.

We? Who's we, Tony and Duhhbya?

Maybe it's REALLY up to Darth and Turd Blossom.

Like everything else.

Things to hope for:
(1) Gonzales stays
(2) Iran greets us as liberators, complete with flowers
(3) Halliburton sends their love from Dubai
(4) Dubya's Library has good security

The continued politicization of legal decisions made by my subordinates threatens to compromise the operations of the Department of Justice. In a time of war, our national security depends on these operations. For this reason, I have tendered my resignation to the President of the United States. While I am certain that history will recognize that there was no wrongdoing, my role as a servant leader requires me to do no less.

Mrs Panstreppon wrote on March 19, 2007 11:31 AM:

I hope AG AG stays, too. If he tenders his resignation, I hope the president refuses to accept it. I want to see the Imperial Presidency fight this investigation tooth and nail.

The firings of US attorney Carol C. Lam and Daniel Bogden were connected through one case that just so happened to be the first time the Patriot Act was used in a non-terrorism related case. The investigation, and the subsequently comprehensive search for financial records ended up getting Sheldon Adelson, the 6th richest man in the world and fervent Bush supporter, involved by highlighting $190,000 of contributions he gave to the now convicted ex-County Commissioner and Lobbyist Lance Malone. It is a highly complicated case but demonstrates that Mark Corallo, who has worked as spokesman for both Karl Rove and Attorney General Gonzales, and also at the Republican National Committee was most likely the go-between to help spur these firings on behalf of Sheldon Adelson.

I'm with Snow Job on this one. I totally hope the Abu Al-Gonzales sticks around for the next 2 years, thereby furthering dragging down the GOP; I hope that scandal after scandal, and investigation after investigation causes the GOP to ingest itself; I hope that the lies, failure, and corruption that have been the halmark of this administration and its GOP bitches in the Congress, for 6 years are dragged kicking and screaming into the daylight and feel the burning of public disgust.

By all means, PLEASE keep Abu Al-Gonzales on the payroll.

I hope they throw him under a bus. The only way to get a big-time organised crime boss (like Cheney, for instance), is to crank up the heat on his underlings, forcing them to betray other underlings, which leaves the boss more vulnerable on two levels: A; he loses a layer of cover; and B: his former defenders become potential witnesses against him. For some reason my mind keeps on wandering back to the Mark Bowden book about the hunt for Pablo Escobar...

Boy there's a vote of confidence.

They are reaching the point where their pol numbers can't go any lower. They are hurt very little if he stays.

Of course, if their pol numbers have bottomed out and there is no hope of moving them any higher... they don't need Karl either.

I'm still hoping for April Fools' Day for the announcement that Gonzales wants to spend more time with his family. Gonzales has to know that Bush's concept of loyalty is completely one-way. Bush has never sacrificed anything of his to help his friends.

Is this because you think this will get Bush, Cheney, Gonzales and Rove impeached and convicted faster?

EH wrote on March 19, 2007 12:10 PM:

I figured he was gone as soon as the administration started calling him "Al," all the time.

Mrs Panstreppon wrote on March 19, 2007 12:14 PM:

F.L., Nah. I just think it will be more fun to watch a sitting AG grilled on national television.

Seriously, replacing Gonzales will take some of the momentum out of the investigation by making it look like the Bush administration "fixed" the problem when the real problem hasn't seen daylight yet.

Richard L. Adlof wrote on March 19, 2007 12:15 PM:

Talk about forecasting the thump-thump of the bus wheels . . .

The question now becomes does Bush imply that he might have made an error appointing his lapdog and Torture Czar to an actual job with duties OR will the vain little prick go against years of existence and do the right thing by resigning.

Mrs. Linder-Phx.AZ wrote on March 19, 2007 12:25 PM:

I hope he stays too but by the sound of Tony, Gonzales will be Gone-saling soon.
I want Gonezales to testify before Congress and before the American people, under oath, hand on Bushie's christian bible. Alberto is not the head of the snake. Rove created Bush, the Manchurian candiate.

Buddy, can you spare a dime?

I think Gonzo should be fired immediately and replaced with Vicky Toensing. No only will nothing get done for the next 2 years but we'll all have massive headaches listening to her.

kentuck wrote on March 19, 2007 12:42 PM:

That means they have already decided to cut him loose? Of course, Bush is loyal - he never fires anyone. Alberto will resign voluntarily, of course.

I hope he stays because it gives the Democrats one shining chance to get it right -- learn how to go for the throat, bite hard, and hang on. The repubs won't run for cover until they see one of their own castrated, crucified and burnt for no other reason than we had the power to do so. Yes, I'm backing the arbitrary, vindictive persecution and destruction of some high-level scumbag. Drive him to suicide.

"We hope he stays." Does that mean that Mr. Gonzales, like about a thousand other political appointees who are subject to Senate cofirmation, no longer serves to pleasure the President?

If Mr. Gonzales has a choice, it is more likely whether he wants the figurative sword and the partnership at a Republican law firm, or a literal boot and a day job working the courthouse in Harlingen. It is not whether he stays.
