One of the reasons he'll keep Gonzales is one of the reasons this whole thing is going on...avoiding Senate confirmation. Bush can't very well put another torturer in front of a Democratic Congress, so Gonzo will stay until he's impeached.

I suppose Bush could choose the cockroach option, like he did with the FDA, seeing how long the DOJ could survive without a head, but I doubt it.

This is backing? Hatch could have made the same statement about anyone currently under investigation anywhere in the US for any crime.
House and Senate Republicans are just going through the motions of supporting an administration even they are tired of defending.
