Today's Must Read
Yesterday, FBI Director Robert Mueller appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to grovel for forgiveness. Over the past several years, the FBI has used thousands of National Security Letters to improperly obtain private information on citizens. The reasons, according to Mueller: "mistakes, carelessness, confusion, lack of training, lack of guidance and lack of adequate oversight."
The senators spent some time scolding him, but relented after it was clear he wouldn't fight back. Mueller's penitence, Chairman Pat Leahy (D-VT) soothingly observed, "seems to be a break from many in this administration now."
But the hearing was also a golden opportunity to grill Mueller on the firings of the U.S. attorneys.
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wanted to know whether Mueller had ever gotten wind of election fraud cases that should have been indicted, but were not (remember, U.S. attorneys work hand-in-hand with the FBI). Mueller responded that he'd never heard, nor asked about such a thing. Schumer followed up, asking whether the administration had consulted him about the prosecutors' performance on election fraud investigations. Again, no. Was he consulted at all about any of the prosecutors' performance before the firings? No.
The bottom line: though powerful Republicans were upset with the decisions not to indict Democrats for voter fraud, the investigators on the ground were not. Mueller said that regional offices do customarily pass complaints about U.S. attorneys up the chain for "serious cases."
There was another fruitful line of questioning.
Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) wanted to know why the bureau chief for San Diego Dan Dzwilewski had complained to the press about Carol Lam's firing, said that he "guaranteed" politics was involved, and that without her, a number of ongoing investigations might be jeopardized. Specter didn't want to hear that from the press -- he wanted to hear that sort of thing from Mueller.
Mueller responded that Dzwilewski hadn't passed such complaints up the chain, and that "my understanding is that our chief out there believes he was misquoted, but that our investigations were continuing, without any diminishment."
Misquoted? Sen. Dianne Feinstein followed up:
FEINSTEIN: Well, we followed up and I had my chief counsel call them to verify what they said. And they said, yes, they said it. But they also said they'd been warned to say no more. Are you aware that they had been warned to say no more?MUELLER: Yes, I am.
FEINSTEIN: And why would that be?
MUELLER: Because I do not think it's appropriate for us to comment on personnel decisions that are made by the Department of Justice....
FEINSTEIN: Well, I profoundly disagree that he was commenting on a personnel matter per se. He was simply saying that it would affect cases that were ongoing. And I think he's entitled to his opinion.

Does anyone else think that this story is actually starting to bring pieces together? It's like in Hollow Man when he goes back to being visible, where you can see the arteries and then bam, there's a heart.
That's how I feel about this: the US Attorneys, the fraud in contracting, voter fraud (can anyone say 2000 and 2004), and people taking the Fifth when it wasn't even sure there was a criminal investigation!
Books Alive wrote on March 28, 2007 9:36 AM:Sen Kyle, OTOH, gave Mueller a fig leaf by misquoting from the Anonymous letter in the March 23 Washington Post from the victim of a National Security letter, assuming this is the same letter that I read (as the WaPo says, they don't publish unsigned letters ordnarily, and the NSL gag rule prevents self-identification of recipients). Kyl indicated the recipient gave up the requested information, but his letter clearly says he did not. He went to the ACLU instead. Mueller went right along with the idea that requested, hence valuable, information had been obtained, although it had not.
In fact, the FBI later told this person that they didn't need his client's information after all, but he still could not reveal his role as an unwilling informant, should he have cooperated with the NSL request. Mueller stated that administrative subpoenas are preferable to national security letters for the FBI as well as the target. The law is less muddled, making it simpler for the FBI to use, and for the target, easier to remove the confidentiality constraint.
I sent e-mails yesterday to Kyle, Durbin and Leahy to point out Kyle's misrepresentation of what the letter-writer had clearly stated.

Mueller is "aware". And, he's also "aware" that politics has played the main part in the firing of the AGs. When did Mueller become "aware"?
And now, what will Mueller do with Dzwilewski?
"Specter didn't want to hear that from the press -- he wanted to hear that sort of thing from Mueller."
Specter. Ah, he's having a hard time covering and running interferrence for Bush and Gonzales. If he tries any harder, it will look like he's part of the conspiracy.
You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.
pt bridgeport wrote on March 28, 2007 10:00 AM:Mueller is correct that it would be subprofessional for Mr. D. to volunteer comments to the press about the wisdom or foolishness of any given personnel decision. What he's not taking into account is that it is entirely professional to comment on the propriety or impropriety of the decision: that's whistleblowing, and it's a good thing.
But regardless of whether Lam's firing was foolish, unethical, or downright criminal, comments which it might be unprofessional to volunteer become unimpeachable when the same comments are elicited by a congressional inquiry. I wouldn't be surprised if Senator Feinstein finds it worthwhile to invite Dzwilewski to DC for a little conversation and clarification.

That should be the Bush Administration's official motto because the same phrase will be used over and over again in summation of their performance when they're gone.

Just a long term, widespread series of judgement problems, mistakes, errors, miscalculations, in every dept. of this Administration, for years, but certainly not any intentional desire to misuse power, harm anyone, etc.
And for most folks, Bush & Co. will go down in history as incompetent bunglars, not intentional burglars.
Which is really too bad, cause we know what they say about history repeating itself.
Mueller should have been fired long ago for his "investigation" into 911 - - those field agents who obstructed the investigation into the "flight school" trainees pre-911 were promoted when they should have been fired if not prosecuted for criminal negligence. The Venice Airport connection as to Atta and the drug ring down there was deep sixed with people actually threatened by the FBI to shut up - - Atta's girlfriend etc. (Daniel Hopsicker has covered this on his blog). "Law enforcement" is nothing but another Bush Crime Family operation these days with Gonzo and Mueller little more than family Capos . . .

Oh really, if the investigations are continuing, then why has no one heard about them. They were pretty high-profile cases. One would think if the investigations were continuing, something would have come out in the media. It's time that some hard questions were answered. Someone needs to ask Gonzales directly what is happening with the investigations in San Diego that Carol Lam was in the middle of when she was fired.

Mueller is a pooor adminstrator. Too many screwups in the FBI. Even though he was in the department a short time, the herniated role the FBI played in 9/11 was enough to trigger his resignation, It would have shown the department that accountabilty was still operative. Indeed in retrospect, his greatest contribution to the department would have been his resignation.
In Japan, suicide would have been the norm for such a devestating catastrophy to occur under one's watch.

Even if the public KNOWS you're lying, if you stick to your lie and the press and Congress refuse to pursue the truth, you get away with it.
So the hypothesis was tested and proved by Reagan, and now the Bush administration is making full use of it.
Unfortunately for Bush, the Republicans are no longer able to cover for him, the bloggers are the new Fourth Estate, and our Democratic Congress is on the case. This will just continue to get worse for Bush. And it's becoming clearer every day that the way forward leading straight to impeachment.

Mueller knows what happened to an innocent medical doctor named DR. MARK GORDON....and what crimes were committed by Minneapolis and Sioux Falls, SD, FBI scumbags.
My complaint got Sioux Falls FBI lowlifes, DAN REYNALDS, DAVID HELLER, and their SAC DEBORAH STREBEL PIERCE FIRED.
THE SD US ATTORNEY JAMES MCMAHON was also fired.
This complaint has been obstructed all the way up the chain of command (FBI OPR, DOJ OPR, DOJ OIG in Denver and Dallas, The Dems at Senate Judiciary Committee, etc, etc.
I gave up on this country along time ago.
I got chipped in my own home, by NSA/DOD/FBI Div 5 and counterintel special agent STEVEN PLUTA at Sioux Falls, SD, FBI.
Why all this smoke and chicanery from big, bad BOB "the cowardly punk" MUELLER?
Because the complaint mentions the Canadian warrant for former Miami FBI agent TERRY NELSON'S CALI COCAINE DISTRIBUTION NETWORK IN MONTANA...and the bank records show laundering into Bush, Racicot and GOP campaigns.
That's the info that the Dems refuse to question Mueller over?
Face it...............I gave the Dems at Senate Judiciary Committee all they needed (FBI and NSA TAMPERING WITH A US SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE WITNESS WHOU OUTED BUSH ON THE NSA TSP when I contacted Senator Grassley three weeks before the New York Times wrote their story).
Notice how the Dems forgot about who KEN TICE WAS AND WHAT HE WANTED TO TESTIFY ABOUT?
How many people understand that the Dems rolled over on oversight of the bogus politicized NSA TSP?
Jack wrote on March 28, 2007 8:33 PM:The FBI has not ever been kind to any form of whistleblower, regardless of why they decided to do it. Their careers are usually ended shortly thereafter. If anyone in the FBI wants to blow the whistle to Congress, they would be well advised to drop an anonymous letter in a mailbox. Congress needs you in place.
ewastud wrote on March 29, 2007 3:50 AM:Many people today may not be aware that Mueller was head of the criminal division of DOJ back in the 1980's during th exposure of the Iran-Contra scandal and he worked diligently back then to stonewall John Kerry's subcommittee's investigation of the BCCI criminal activities, which have also been linked to the Bush crime family in very complex ways. Mueller is a water carrier for the Bushes, IMHO - he sure as hell is no "straight arrow," nor even very competent at his job, as has been show recently.
Larry Matthews wrote on March 29, 2007 5:08 PM:I noted from this article that Mueller thought that the comments from FBI agent Dan Dzwilewski was interfering in a personnel matter when he questioned the dismissal of Carol Lamm. I heard today from the testimony from Kyle Sampson that he too called that FBI agent because he thought it was interfering with a personnel matter. This is odd. Have they talked together about this matter? Did both receive information from the WH after this appeared in the paper and told to solve this problem. Dianne Feinstein carried the ball on this issue. I think it needs to be expanded into who had contacts with this particular agent after his statement and who else they may have spoken with about this concern. This sounds like Karl Rove to be. Go after the leaker or complainer! Rovian politics at its best.
James F. Marino wrote on April 25, 2007 8:59 PM:Robert Mueller is just another liar and member of the fascist bureau of intimidation. The FBI has always been a complete joke as law enforcement, instead acting as a domestic spy and enforcer of the status quo in America.
The truth about this subversive agency and its Illegal COINTELPRO operations is that is has never
abided by US Law or the US Bill Of Rights, violating both civil and human rights routinely in its nearly 100 year history.
Of course the US media never talks about the FBI's crimes, because it was subverted by the CIA back in 1948 as a result of Operation Mockingbird. Mockingbird was headed by Frank Weisner and Allen Dulles, both of who contacted Phil Graham of The Washington Post, asking him to help out in the cause of wiping out Communism in the United States -- another complete fraud .
However, Graham bought into it and contacted many of his media peers (journalists who were not above making some easy money on the side circulating the CIA's black propaganda.
Since that time, the entire US media industry is controlled by a less than 100 very powerful people at the apex of this industry; those who see to it that the CIA's protocols for keeping the US Intelligence community out of the media
whenever issues that could cause it serious problems surface.
Ironically enough, Phil Graham was found dead in the 1970's from what was reported to be a suicide.
But one must wonder if he had a pange of conscience and told the CIA that he no longer wanted to participate in their scheme of defrauding the American people through the US media's propaganda.
Over the years, many journalists who were exposing crimes that the CIA was involved in have committed suicide. At least that was on the coroner's report.
However in the case of Gary Webb, a reporter who was doing exposes on the CIA's drugs for weapons Iran Contra scandal, he turned up with two gun shots to the back of his head. A suicide??
And Steve Kangas, a former US Military Intelligence officer was found murdered when he was in the process of writing a book in regard to the CIA's drug trafficking operations in the United States and their manufacture of crack cocaine.
Kangas was also shot in the head. Yet his death was ruled a suicide.
The FBI is essentially just a domestic form of CIA, in which it uses covert forms of terrorism to maintain the status quo in this country, while protecting the criminals who run this government and the corporations who run it.
George W. Bush was accused of raping a woman by the name of Margie Schoedinger, who filed charges against him. She was dead from a gunshot wound to the head less than 9 later. Yet the mainsream media ignored her story, which also included an account of the FBI itself being used by Bush to attack Schoedinger in efforts to destroy her.
See Raymond Ponzini's "An American Caligula" which can be accessed on Google, to learn more about this coverup that Bush and the FBI are involved in.

These people are typical of the absolute CRAP that we have operating in the US Intelligence community; something that should have been abolished in favor of a much moral and law abiding Intelligence community.
Given the scandals that are this community is now being faced with, and those which have yet to be promulgated on a mainstream basis, it is only a matter of time before US Intelligence is completely restructured as a datagathering service, which is no longer allowed to use any forms of counterintelligence -- those extensive criminal aspects of these agencies which have destroyed their credibility.
