Swiftboat Funder Withdraws Bid for Ambassadorship

Sam Fox, the administration's pick to be the U.S. ambassador to Belgium, has withdrawn his bid.

Why? Things weren't going his way. From the AP:

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., and other Democrats are raising concerns about Fox's nomination to be ambassador to Belgium because of a $50,000 contribution Fox made in 2004 to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth....

With a vote on Fox expected Wednesday in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Kerry's Vietnam crew mates on Tuesday sent a letter urging committee members to oppose Fox's nomination. A copy of the letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

“In our judgment, those who finance smears and lies of combat veterans don't deserve to represent America on the world stage,” said the letter signed by James Rassman and 10 other Vietnam Swift Boat veterans who served with Kerry.

Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., said Tuesday he opposes the nomination because Fox “refused to apologize for his behavior” during his confirmation hearing last month.

The sheer temerity of this appointment just shows the lunacy of this administration.

Kerry is on the fricken committee which has to approve his nomination, and you don't think the fact he funded the group that destroyed Kerry will affect anyone's view of him?

The sycophancy of the Bush advisors to tell him this was a good idea must be sickening.

Good riddance.

How nice it would have been to see the Democrats vote his nomination into the toilet. "I didn't know what they were going to spend it on!" What a maroon.

this is a tremendous opportunity for the democrats.

as the bush administration's power wanes, more and more disgruntled bushies will be popping up. they will be saying, "i was promised X for doing Y".

if they are slimy enough to be swiftboater types in the first place, they are slimy enough to expose some of the underpinnings and backdoor dealings that they had with the bush administration.

the dems should "turn" these guys to their advantage.

Is the tip of another pay-for-play iceberg?

Just how many of our sitting ambassadors got thier plum appointments because they were Rangers or Pioneers in Rove's political ally cabal?

I would wager there's more than one Texas accent plaguing our ability to communicate fruitfully with our world neighbors, now that Bush has intsalled all his cronies in our diplomatic corps.

Time for some time with the googles...?

All this is public information, and while each one of these "Bushbubba" appointments is not an evident issue in itself, much like the local aspect of the US Attorney matter, in looking at the whole picture, a more pernicious and insidious influence is clearly evident.

The last straw for me was when he praised Kerry's service during the hearing and then said he was not aware what his donation would be used for. That may have been true, but it hardly qualifies him to be an Ambassador. I wrote Cardin, my Senator, and encouraged others to do likewise. This need not be a partisan issue--it has more to do with basic decency which should be the sine qua non of politics. Thanks to those who brought this to light.

I certainly hope Senator Kerry doesn't plan to spend the rest of his years in office getting revenge on those who smeared him. While revenge can be sweet, it can also appear incredibly petty if it's repeated at every opportunity. I'm sure Kerry's pissed off at these people. But at least some of the blame for his defeat is his and I, for one, would like to see him aim his guns a little higher. We all know who was behind the Swiftboating. It's the guy behind the Swiftboaters that I'd like to see in the hot seat. And that's ultimately the president via Karl Rove.

Excuse me Mark F., this isn't about revenge from or for John Kerry.

Sam Fox is, in this case, the poster boy for the moral rot of the Republican party. The problem presented by the Republican party is not Bush, it's the whole disgusting gang.

Inasmuch as Rove is concerned, he gets nowhere without the support of people like Sam Fox. Well heeled contributors like Fox should not be rewarded for financing the ongoing perfidy of Republican campaign tactics.

A blow should be struck at every available opportunity.

Mark F. -- did you even watch the hearing, or at least the portion where Sen. Kerry questioned Sam Fox? Here's the Crooks'N'Liars edition.

Sen. Kerry gave the man every opportunity to disavow his connection with SBVT and Fox chose not to take it. Sen. Kerry was even gracious... certainly more so than I would have been in his situation. We also saw his cool, calm, quiet, prosecutorial skills at work.

I don't think you need to worry about Kerry's judgment. It worked just fine.

I suspect the White House had a pretty good idea he wouldn't be confirmed. They take the temperature on this stuff before they actually submit a name.

The WH was likely thinking that they've rewarded Fox with a nomination, and from then on it's between him and Kerry. This is definitely about revenge for Kerry, and good for him. He does have to be careful about seeming petty, and it appears he did a pretty good job of that.

As for the criticism of Dodd, I'm not a big supporter of his presidential candidacy, but I suspect he was just being the good soldier. You've got to give some politically reasonable explanation for rejecting a nominee. You can't just say "I voted against him for revenge," as satisfying as it would be to most of us. You've got to appear willing to meet him half way by allowing him to apologize. It doesn't mean Dodd would ever vote to confirm him.

Brussels is an important diplomatic posting, especially in times of war. Especially too in times of war tribunals. Yes, be nice to have a rich crony in town.
