Emails Show Statement on Rove Involvement Went Through White House
Another crucial detail from the documents just released: the White House is also complicit.
On February 22, Kyle Sampson wrote, "Because this letter mentions Rove and alludes to Harriet, I'd like to send it to [the White House Counsel's Office] today for their review, with an eye on getting it out tomorrow." The letter was sent the next day.
The mention of Rove, of course, was that he wasn't involved in the appointment of his former aide as U.S. attorney, something shown to be false by the Justice Department emails.
Reacting to the released documents, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said:
“The plot continues to thicken. It seems the Justice Department rarely acted without the knowledge and approval of the White House. In effect, the White House was involved in denying its own involvement. This makes the need for Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, and others in the White House to testify under oath, with transcripts even greater.”

Abby Kelleyite wrote on March 28, 2007 6:21 PM:Note that what the white house reviewed was a letter saying that the "Department [of Justice]" was not "aware" of any Rove role in the decision. It didn't say anything about the white house being aware or whether in fact Rove was involved. Weasel crafted sentence.

Was it pure hubris? Do they hate people that much?

That AP story...
WASHINGTON - Eight federal prosecutors were fired last year because they did not sufficiently support President Bush's priorities, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' former chief of staff says in remarks prepared for delivery Thursday to Congress.
"The distinction between 'political' and 'performance-related' reasons for removing a United States attorney is, in my view, largely artificial," said Kyle Sampson.

Fascinating, he's planning to get out there and do a full wingnut in front of the committee: there's no wrongdoing here because we're free to do whatever we want. This is what you get from keeping them on a steady diet of kool aid and Fox News. He's going to implicate them all.

hubbabubba wrote on March 28, 2007 6:51 PM:Firedoglake has a related question for consideration by Sen. Schumer, et al.:
Why did Arlen Specter's aide-de-camp Tolman slip the provisions excluding Senate confirmation of USA's into the Homeland Security Act, and who told him to do it? Specter should be first in line to get to the bottom of that...and I think this is another case of Rove-review of law, regulation, and regulators.

I'm losing score...I can't tell if Sampson is being willingly set-up by DOJ to take the fall or whether he's going to be blowing the man-hole cover off this den of thugs...or both. Or neither.
There's a WaPo article out now stating that DOJ is admitting discrepencies but it seems to be indicating that it was all because of that damn Sampson. You know..."heh-heh, ambitious political hitmen can get exuberant at times and overstep their bounds." Is this the approach that abu G is going to use to wriggle out? Or is Sampson's apparent statement turning the water up to boil?

It's the incompetence that naturally follows the most extreme and blinding hubris. "Pride goeth before the fall," methinks.

Beck has a gmail account. The ad that appears at the top of the email reads "The Abscam Sting - Scandal/TheCardGame.com".
Gotta love those gmail ads!
And break out the subpoenas already, especially for all of these non-.gov email addresses.

Giant Teapot wrote on March 28, 2007 11:56 PM:From USNews blog today, this additional tale of overweening hubris:
"But the release of White House emails to the Democrats and the expanded request for more from Rep. Henry Waxman has iced the system. At least two aides said that they have subsequently bought their own private E-mail system through a cellular phone or Blackberry server. When asked how he communicated, one aide pulled out a new personal cellphone and said, "texting.""
Seriously? They bought new cellphones and think their texting is PRIVATE now? Mind-boggling.

Karl Rove is *supposed* to be smart enough to have covered his trail with the help of some crooked RNC IT guys, but he can't have controlled the FWD's and REPLY's showing his emails. I bet some very patriotic IT guys at the WH and DOJ have been holding the fort and will someday be recognized for their bravery.
Giant Teapot ,you are correct. The "underlings" , who work for the Busheviks at BushCo- actually are honet & loyal Americans. And these same said loyal Americans all across the bureaucracy in DC have been in quiet but open revolt against the Rovian putsche. Its not just the DOJ,its the DOD ,its wherever you look. More will be revealed later -one good "underling" to keep an eye on in this investigative proccess is the FBI station chief in San Diego -(think Carol Lam & Duncan Hunter & Dick Cheney , & Brent Wilkes, & phony contracfor anthrax protection at the White House)
