GOP Anti-Alberto Roll Call

update: For a more recent list, click here.

Alberto Gonzales is working hard to shore up support on the Hill, but there are a number of Republicans who aren't worth a phone call.

Below is a list of GOP lawmakers and other notables who want Gonzales gone. In the interest of clairty, we've chosen to limit it to those who've made unequivocal statements -- if the list included those who've merely expressed skepticism, it would be much, much longer.

Here it is:

The Senate:

Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR)- "For the Justice Department to be effective before the U.S. Senate, it would be helpful."

Sen. John Sununu (R-NH)- "The president should fire the attorney general and replace him as soon as possible with someone who can provide strong, aggressive leadership."

The House:

Rep. Vern Elhers (R-MI)- "Since he's such a close, personal friend, he's hurt the President by what he's doing, he should have the politeness to offer his resignation."

Rep. Paul Gillmor (R-OH)- 'Given the totality of the circumstances, I think it would be better for the President and the Department if the Attorney General were to step down."

Rep. Dana Rohrbacher (R-CA)- "Even for Republicans this is a warning sign … saying there needs to be a change."

Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE)- "Frankly, until these statements came out that contradicted his first statement, I was backing him, saying that he shouldn't resign. Now I think that he should."

Other Notables:

The National Review Editorial Board- "Alberto Gonzales should resign. The Justice Department needs a fresh start."

Mark Corallo, Justice Department spokesman (2002-2005)- "Alberto Gonzales' loyalty to George Bush has got to trump George Bush's loyalty to Alberto Gonzales."

How much longer will the list grow after the April 17 hearing?

Note: If we've missed any other notable calls for the AG's head, let us know in the comments.

From the Minnesota USAO story - there was this item buried at the bottom.....

"And indeed, some of the early White House memos indicate three people on the hit list resigned before they could be fired."

I don't ever remember seeing this noted elsewhere - or seeing it in the document dump myself - or from those TPM readers who dutifully went through each of the stacks.....

Also, if this was in the documents - presumably Schumer would have known about it when he was asking Sampson who the other USAs were on the hitlist. He would have known they already resigned & thus that was why they were off the final list.

Does anyone else remember seeing any reference to this?

I'm surprised there isn't more being said about the case in Wisconsin that was overturned yesterday:

http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070405/APC0101/70405164/1003/APC01

"A former state worker was being released from prison Thursday after an appeals court overturned her conviction on charges she steered a contract to a company that donated to Gov. Jim Doyle.

"A three-judge panel of the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals vacated Georgia Thompson’s convictions and ordered her immediate release from the Illinois prison she entered in November after oral arguments on Thursday."

This was a federal case filed by U.S. Attorney Steven Biskupic in Milwaukee.

A comment on the WP article about the documents, clued me in. Under no circumstances will he resign. If a confirmable AG was installed, the whole White House crowd would end up in prison. The only obstacle between Bush-Rove and billowing winds of oblivion is one diminutive political peon named Gonzales! Impeachment, roll on!

Almost:

Rep. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, the senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, called the Justice Department's management dysfunctional for sending Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General Will Moschella to testify before the panel last week "without knowing all the facts."

"They're going to have to come up with some answers," Sensenbrenner said Tuesday in an interview with The Associated Press. "If they don't, they're going to lose everyone's confidence."

"What I'd like to hear is the truth," he said, complaining about the Justice Department's different explanations for the dismissals. If that record is not corrected, Sensenbrenner said, "then the Justice Department and the attorney general himself are going to die by a thousand cuts."

I don't know what the problem is, but he's got a problem. You cannot have the nation's chief law enforcement officer with a cloud hanging over his credibility," --- Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.

Alberto Gonzales apparently never communicated a code of conduct to guide them as they wrestled with various political pressures. That's a grievous failure of leadership. --- NYTimes, David Brooks

I was browsing the net, and happened to look up what my US Rep. Dan Lungren has been up to lately. After a google search, I found his page, and as he is on the House Judiciary Committee, I clicked a link and found myself on a page for Republican committee members. At the very top of the page, there was a link to a letter the republican ranking member has sent to former President, Bill Clinton.

Seems that, "The House Committee on the Judiciary's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and
Homeland Security will hold a hearing on Thursday, March 29, 2007, at 10:00 a.m.

The letter goes on to invite Clinton to speak on the issue because "You are no stranger to controversial pardons, most notably the pardon of Marc Rich on your last day in office."

There is no limit to their "in your face" arrogance. The rapaciousness of their hearts shows in their every action.

Here's the site link to the letter:

Charles Bowman,

I think you are dead on . . . But that is only half the story:

A comfirmable AG would have to investigate, indict, prosecute and imprision the whole gaggle of Fascist Plutocracts in the Shrub 43 Klepocracy. BUT . . .

The Chimp-in-Charge would have less than zero desire to fill that position once the hobbit Fredo is finally drug kicking from the scene. Bush and buddies will get to play to their strength . . . Embattled by the godless, evil, bad, stinky liberals . . . Although liberal may be defined as 99 percent of America soon.

The writting is all over the wall on this one AND they can afford to run out the clock. That would mean that our best hope lays in bottling them up so they can't do anything until the next President having them all arrested as tay-er-rists and sent to some country whose name ends with -istan for a little firm questioning.

It will be ugly but the Fox-Opinioncast may have something to report on other than the missing white woman of the week soon.

Gonzales should go, Ehlers says
Sunday, April 08, 2007
By Nate Reens
Gazette News Service

GRAND RAPIDS -- Ashamed of the way Attorney General Alberto Gonzales handled firing eight federal prosecutors and other issues, U.S. Rep. Vern Ehlers said the head of the Justice Department should resign.

Ehlers, R-Grand Rapids, said Gonzalez should offer President George W. Bush the courtesy of ending the political controversy over what role the Attorney General played in the dismissals.

[snip]

Senate Democrats last week postponed Gonzales' first chance to testify in his own defense over the firings of eight federal prosecutors, including Margaret Chiara from the Western District of Michigan.

Gonzales won't appear on Capitol Hill until April 17.

``Maybe he should leave before the Democrats have that whole circus,'' Ehlers said.

U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Holland, was out of the country and could not be reached. U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, also could not be reached.

Spanish-language papers want Gonzales to resign.
From ThinkProgress:
http://thinkprogress.org/2007/04/07/spanish-language-papers-want-gonzales-to-resign/

The daily La Opinión in Los Angeles and the Chicago weekly La Raza argue in a common editorial that Alberto Gonzales should resign. ‘The firing of the U.S. attorneys is sufficient cause for doubting his capacity for distinguishing his loyalty to President George W. Bush from his duty to citizens,’ the editorial says. Another Spanish-language column in the Chicago paper Hoy:

Gonzales’ ascent was “a double triumph,” Muñoz wrote: “Not only was he was the first Latino attorney general, but he was the first Latino to occupy one of the four most important seats in the presidential cabinet.”

But with many in Congress calling for his resignation as a result of the U.S. attorney firings, the columnist added, “Latino leadership needs to join” in that demand. “Gonzales not only has let down the community — he’s let down the nation,” Muñoz…wrote.

Sam Thornton wrote on April 10, 2007 2:45 PM:

I fervently hope Gonzalez DOES NOT resign prior to his testimony to Congress. We need this weasel on the record, under oath, before he slips out the door. After that, he can take a flying leap at the moon, he's still indictable.
