Conservative Groups: Gonzales Should Go

From Time:

In what could prove an embarrassing new setback for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on the eve of his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a group of influential conservatives and longtime Bush supporters has written a letter to the White House to call for his resignation....

Alluding to ongoing scandal, it notes: "He has engendered the suspicion that partisan politics trumps evenhanded law enforcement in the Department of Justice."...

Signatories to the letter include Bruce Fein, a former senior official in the Reagan Justice Department, who has worked frequently with current Administration and the Republican National Committee to promote Bush's court nominees; David Keene, chairman of the influential American Conservative Union, one of the nation's oldest and largest grassroots conservative groups, Richard Viguerie, a well-known GOP direct mail expert and fundraiser, Bob Barr, the former Republican congressman from Georgia and free speech advocate, as well as John Whitehead, head of the Rutherford Institute, a conservative non-forit active in fighting for what it calls religious freedoms.

Nothing but a thin attempt to deflect attention from the real culprits.

What timing!

What, no signatures from anyone in the Federalist Society?

These guys have been in the news before. They are the kind of text-book (in a good way) Conservatives who have attacked the administration for its war against civil liberties -- they recently formed the "American Freedom Agenda", and described there goals this way:

===========
"to restore congressional oversight and habeas corpus, end torture and extraordinary rendition, narrow the President's authority to designate 'enemy combatants,' prevent unconstitutional wiretaps, email and mail openings, protect journalists from prosecution under the Espionage Act, and more."

In a statement, the four said the president "has encroached on the power of Congress to make laws, and on the power of the courts to interpret the law - a scenario that the Founding Fathers foresaw and warned against." As a result, they said, "We are issuing this call to Americans of all political and philosophical persuasions to join us in urging Congress to enact The American Freedom Agenda."
================

We should be applauding this.

Hell No, Don't Let Al G. Go! wrote on April 16, 2007 2:20 PM:

Nope, President George W. Bush should stand by his man for the sake of Texas. How would it look if a former member of the Texas State Supreme Court resigned under a cloud of suspicion?

A lot of people already think Gonzales was appointed to the TX Supreme Court for one year or so to throw a big case. Whe he got the job, Al G. knew he would join the Bush administration if Bush was elected.

Besides, a lot of the fun will be gone from this scandal if Al G. resigns and we can't kick the sitting AG around on the internet. Conventional wisdom - out of sight, out of mind.

Speaking of out of sight and out of mind, I wonder what Kyle Sampson and Monica Goodling do all day now. Work on their resumes?

What do the Right wingnut groups know that we don't? . . .

It is beginning to look like the whole Gone-lawless thing is going to go something like this:

Bush is going to declare "Heck of job, Afredo! Day then

Three months to get Gone-lawless out then

Three months to choose the 'right' candidate then

A month to reject he/she/it then

A month of White House whining/complaining/grousing about it then

Three months to choose the 'right' candidate then

AFTER A YEAR WITHOUT JUSTICE, we will end up with either a jack-booted thug or a milquetoast arse who will let the White House run out the clock without ever investigating boo while Whore-for-Hay . . .

Sad.

And when will they get around to Rove?

No, no, no. We already let Rummy and Brownie escape - keep Fredo and Rice and Cheney right there in the gun sights every single day from now through impeachment.

The wingnuts want gonzo gone like they wanted rummy gone - get the chump out of the way so the Chimp survives.

Don't fall for it!

Prediction Time:

Which Senator will deliver the KO punch to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales?

My money is on Specter. His questioning of Sampson was masterful and showed that he understands the difference between an interrogation and appearing on Bill O'Riley. Schumer needs to cut to the chase and leave the theatrics at home. Leahy was a prosecutor and it showed, but I think the coup de gras is more likely to come from a Republican. My Money is on Specter.

Ya win some, ya lose some. And I'm not touching "screw" with a ten-foot screw-driver.

Stand by your man, Dubya. I'd rather see your boy (as well as all of you) impeached than getting off with a resignation and a pardon.

But hey, if Abu G wants to resign, that's cool: it lets us move on to the next target in your administration. Impeach until you get to the top, I say.

"Conservative Groups: Gonzales Should Go" ...and then he should be prosecuted for war crimes.
