Specter: Gonzales Has "Burden of Proof"

Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) is a key figure for Alberto Gonzales, since he's yet to call for his resignation, though seems close to doing so.

In his opening statement, Specter made it clear that Gonzales has a high hill to climb -- he has the "burden of proof," Specter said, then proceeding to run through some of the key contradictions between Gonzales' statements and testimony given by his former aides under oath.

Note: No, there's nothing wrong with your screen. It appears Specter has some sort of eye infection. Get well, senator!

Specter: "Let's move on. I don't think you're going to win a debate about your preparation, frankly."

That's GOTTA hurt.

In the end, Specter will fold. He always does. He's like McCain; they make a few noises to fool the media in believing that they are straight-shootin' GOP moderates, but in the end they will circle the wagons with their Republican co-conspirators. They always do.

It's good to see Specter back in the mode of a prosecuter on cross -- esp. since he helped create this problem! well, today, Arlen has won back some of my confidence.

Specter actually doesn't suck here. And he's right--Gonzalez has LOST his credibility. He's been trapped in so many deceits that it's no longer incumbent upon his accusers to prove what he says is false, it's on him to prove what he says is true.

Has anybody else noticed that Gonzalez has the same facial expressions that Bush does? Same squinty eyes, frown, vague air of petulance, disbelief and condescention?

I can't imagine that is going to be helpful.

Security code: judge. (Personally, I'd have gone with mene mene tekel upharsin.)

Now THAT's funny. I too am looking forward to Alberto getting the big finger.

Specter is protecting the President by making Gonzales the scapegoat. I would like to see the Democrats ask Gonzales who is finally responsible for removing the USAs, he or the President. Then make it obvious with the evidence they have why they were removed.

Ask a simple question; Who is finally responsible for removing the USAs?

I think Specter has cut him loose.

At the end of the day, I won't be surprised to hear Specter say he wasn't satisfied with the answers provided by Gonzo. Specter may even call for Gonzo's resignation.

This isn't because Specter is a great guy, it's because there's a hurrican force wind blowing against Gonzo, Specter has run for shelter.

Kennedy seems well prepared, and he's tenacious. I hope the Dems are going to box the AG in and make him look utterly incompetent, and then, when he's tired and cornered (and reading the writing on the wall!), maneuver him into incriminating the Prez. Hope springs eternal!

"I don't recall remembering...."

Well, that's it in a nutshell, isn't it?! What an ass.

Yes, he's a lot like Bush -- he shares that spoiled-brat whine.

Yes, Specter as well as anybody else knows that Gonzales is gone, and he has been for weeks. Talking points aside, the strategy has been to firewall anybody higher up, to sacrifice the administration's "soldiers" in order to preserve their plans. Whether this hearing manages or even attempts to break through that, to regard Gonzales' leaving as a foregone conclusion so they can get to the real business, remains to be seen.

I suspect that all involved understand that this hearing is one battle in a war against the unitary exec. Gonzales and his handlers probably understand that he's toast and will try to make the best of what is just a holding action.

Damn you, EH! :)

Sen. Specter should have worn an eye patch just to throw off Beto.
