Gonzales Distances Himself from Sampson Plan
Alberto Gonzales, during questioning by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said that he’d never intended to install Tim Griffin as U.S. Attorney for Little Rock using the Patriot Act provision -- a plan that Kyle Sampson had advocated. Doing that was a “dumb idea,” Gonzales said. And he says that when Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) told him that he would not support Griffin’s nomination in December, he offered to have Pryor suggest replacements. That’ll be news to Pryor, who’s said that Gonzales appeared to be following Kyle Sampson’s plan to string him along, to run out the clock, when they spoke. Pryor has said publicly, repeatedly, that Gonzales lied to him.
Later in the hearing, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) pressed Gonzales on this in a brutal line of questioning. We'll have that up soon.

Seriously folks, stick a fork in him, he's through. Horrible, horrible performance. When even the most delusional of Republicans see it- he has to go. But this is not over. Far from it.
Gonzo stands on both sides at once. He says he agreed with adding the law to the Patriot Act to bypass the Senate in USA confirmations, but he didn't agree with bypassing the Senate in confirming Griffin. So he both agrees and disagrees with an action at the same time? That's creative.
And I think Sampson did testify that Gonzo didn't object to the plan to bypass Congress wrt Griffin.

I really expected a better performance from him. This isn't even a challenge. He comes across as an incompetent, lying, clown. This guy went to Harvard. WTF happened to this guy. Has being a Bush bootlicker turned him into a bumbling idiot? Weird. Oh well Gonzo, it was nice knowing you. Now it's onto the next criminal in this administration.

My question is this: if this is the result of weeks of cramming and prepping, what, exactly, were they prepping him for? Is DOJ/WH playing this hearing as a big ruse to create a "reasonable" excuse for AG to resign without Bush having to ask; i.e. to make it appear as though he's simply "jumping on the grenade?"

Start a process for determining who needs to go and give it over to Homer Sampson. Tell Homer there are complaints from politicians about voter fraud. Homer adds people to the list and and then retains one because the state senator would not mind them being removed. Limited involvement. Didn't think this was related to the "process". But in hindsight ...

listening to the a.m. testimony again on c-span3, gonzales said a reason for dumping bogden was that he wasn't prosecuting obscenity and "it is against the law and it is therefore our duty to prosecute." well, there is a federal law making it a crime to impersonate smoky the bear too, but no one has been dumped for failing to pursue those cases.

my question = why was DAG offended? what was wrong with the letter? (it is located at DAG 511, Doc. Set 1-2, 3/19/07 doc dump [and many other places too as i recall]). the letter provides the DAG with advance info about an upcoming meeting with him concerning sharing information among federal agencies and with state and local agencies about terrorism. i couldn't understand why mcnulty had his nose out of joint about this letter when i read it, and the memoranda concerning it, in the early document dumps. now that letter is being cited as reason for firing mcKay. i just don't get it.
