Dems Ask Gonzales for Answers about Minnesota USA
House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), a member of the committee, wrote Alberto Gonzales today to ask about U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Rachel Paulose, the Federalist Society member and former senior aide in the Justice Department who was installed there last year. Paulose attracted attention last month when four members of her senior staff voluntarily stepped down to protest her apparently dictatorial managerial approach.
One of the mysteries of the U.S. attorney scandal has been whether Paulose's predecessor, Thomas Heffelfinger, who abruptly resigned in February of last year, left voluntarily. He says he did. If so, it's a hell of a coincidence -- just the month before, he'd appeared on a draft of Kyle Sampson's list of U.S. attorneys to be fired.
Conyers and Ellison want answers on whether Heffelfinger was asked to leave and why Paulose was put in his place. They've also asked for any documents relevant to Heffelfinger's removal, Paulose's selection, or the turmoil there. You can read the letter here.
So it would appear that Gonzales can expect some questions about Paulose when he appears before the committee on Thursday.

Couldn't happen to a better bunch.

Both Houses of Congress need to ratchet up a notch or two . . . Perhaps Representative Conyers needs to start questioning by confirming that citizens do not have the right to habeas corpus . . . Before they get into the meat of the questioning.

"concentrating on immigration and voter fraud cases." He can't concentrate on voter fraud because there isn't enough to worry about. What other election fraud that is going on is probably coming through Abu's office!
Besides Alzheimers, the word, criminal, keeps popping into my head when I think of Abu Gonzales and the DOJ. What a sad time for America and the brave people that defended our freedoms in years past. Most are spinning in their graves when they seen the crimes of the bush crime family.
Rebel wrote on May 8, 2007 10:13 PM:I believe Heffelfinger got a heads up on his pending removal and resigned. He was too much of a U S Attorney to play the "Loyal Bushie" Republican voter fraud game IMHO. Don't forget Paulose was working at the DOJ before Heffelfinger resigned.
Believe me, voter fraud was being pushed quite heavily in Minnesota especially when rabid rightwing Christian Republican Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer took office. But even with her typical rightwing fever she turned up nothing that Hefflefinger wanted to handle. She did a remarkably good job of destroying her own career though. Even in 2004 her voter disenfranchisement attemps were showing. That fall an article appeared in the City Pages titled "Ten Million Kiffmeyer Critics Can't Be Wrong." It was a series of quotes that other made about her, including Democrats, Independents and fellow Republicans. Below is a sample.
"The baseless allegations [that Hennepin County violated federal voter registration rules] represent an appalling lack of expertise and knowledge of the law in the secretary of state's office. The unwarranted charges have taken valuable time away from our staff, at considerable cost to taxpayers.... As chair of the Hennepin County Board, I expect a prompt apology to our staff and the taxpayers. This is obviously not a partisan matter, as Secretary of State Kiffmeyer and I are both Republicans." ~~ Randy Johnson
"If people take [her] warnings seriously, they will be suspiciously eyeing every 'strange looking' neighbor waiting in line [at polling places]. Thankfully, election officials around the state refused to put [her terrorist alert] posters up. But the point is: Kiffmeyer should not have sent them out to begin with. Where is her judgment?" ~~ Tim Penny ~~ Independent Candidate for Governor
"In less than six years, she has distinguished herself as probably the least competent person to hold this important office in Minnesota history."~~ Mike Opat ~~ Non Partisan Hennepin County Comissioner
Kiffmeyer was a "Loyal Bushie," moreso than Heffelfinger. Fortunately for Minnesota Kiffmeyer's incompetence lead to her own undoing. She lost the election in 2006.

Don't worry Dean. I think he finds it amusing to say, "Again Senator, I just don't recall." At this point he's getting a kick out of it. He knows he looks like a lying putz so he might as well have a laugh in the process.
What I want to hear is someone to call him on that bs phrase "recall remembering" - here is my fantasy-dialogue:
Sen: Mr Gonzalez, do you remember A?
Scott L wrote on May 9, 2007 2:22 AM:AG: I don't recall remembering A, Mr. Senator.
Sen: But that's not the question, Mr. Gonzalez. I asked, do you remember A?
AG: I don't recall remembering A, Mr. Senator.
Sen: Again, Mr. Gonzalez, let's be clear here. I didn't ask, do you recall remembering A, I asked, do you remember A itself. These are two completely different questions. I asked, do you remember A?
AG: I don't recall remembering A, Mr. Senator.
Sen: Mr. Gonzalez, I am losing my patience with your failure to address my question. I am not asking whether you can recall an instance of recalling A. That is a second-order question. I want to know whether you recall A simpliciter. The question of whether you recall remembering something is totally irrelevant! So please, just answer my question, do you remember A?
AG: I don't recall remembering A, Mr. Senator.
Sen. Mr Gonzalez, I have no choice but to vote to hold you in contempt, for failing to answer my simple questions! Your irrelevant answers about recalling remembering, or not, are not answers to the questions you were directed under oath to answer.
Drag out the lie detector machines. Sounds fair to me.
Ron Russell wrote on May 9, 2007 4:41 AM:When (or better, if) is the Judiciary going to forward Articles of Impeachment against Abu Gonzales, for lying to Congress? He's been caught repeatedly and the secondary lies of "I don't recall" are no longer relevant.
I suspect he hasn't faced impeachment because Democrats have a political advantage to keep him there. So my final question is: Would the political will continue to exist to push the US Attorney scandal, if Gonzo was gone?
parrot wrote on May 9, 2007 5:36 AM:First off, Conyers committee is the one that will probably decide whether the house should offer Articles to the House to vote on...unless the leadership of the House steps in directly. This should be a very, very interesting session to watch on Thursday.
Now, when are we going to get the 'AG' out of AG AG?
LimaBN wrote on May 9, 2007 6:16 AM:Another interesting thing about former Minnesota
Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer's little BushCo
jihad against "illegal voting" - the wingers had poll-watchers all over the state who pissed off the Chicano voters something fierce.
And what was funny was that, by and large, the
Hispanic-American voters came to vote for Bush - after all, he spoke Spanish, and they thought they knew him. And here were these racist white wingnuts challenging anyone who looked like s/he might be guilty of voting while brown.
The Hispanic-American community has trended Republican here in Minnesota for quite awhile. When Paul Wellstone would work the Cinco de Mayo
parades in West Saint Paul, you would think they would have been cheering for the man who did so much for their community. Instead, they applauded Coleman. Of all people, Norm Coleman, the handmaiden of irresponsible capitalism...
Thanks to people like Kiffmeyer, the Republicans have endangered their access to the Hispanic-American vote for years to come. The only way they can hang onto it now is through the "faith-based initiative" funding of the evangelical movers.
As to whether USA Heffelfinger quit, got fired, or got shoved - it took him something like four months to find a new job here in Minneapolis. Not the kind of happy landing one would expect if he had any participation in the process of his removal. And he didn't get the $1.5 million bonus that that one California USA (Yang?) got for laying off Rep. Doolittle and taking a job with the firm that is defending him, either.
Just goes to show that it pays better to go after the buggers - at least do so long enough to make them really nervous.

The circumstances of her departure are very strange.
***Josh & Co.,***
There are a number of Congressional inquiries to date, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of them.
A summary of various Letters sent by the various commitee's, the individuals/items/topics of the letters along with the follow-up responses would help tremendously in keeping everything straight.
I thought that the format used for the "grand ole docket" might work.
Mrs Panstreppon wrote on May 9, 2007 9:19 AM:Has anymore been said about the missing emails?? That topic has been off the radar for awhile now.
Take a look at Paulose's resume, available at the HJC doc dump. Link below - p. 11.
On her resume, Paulose indicates that she has been worked for the Republican Party since 1992. I wonder if that bit of information has always been on Paulose's resume since she worked in the Civil Rights Division of the DOJ from 10/98 to 5/99.
Paulose, of course, is a member of the Federalist Society and has been since 2001.
After leaving her position as AUSA in 9/02, Paulose did two short stints at two different law firms. At Williams & Connolly, she defended someone or some group against a class action slave reparations suit. Paulose worked at W&C from 10/02 to 10/03.
She worked at Dorsey & Whitney from 10/03 to 12/05 where she defended faith-based health care prgorams. She also claims to have successfully represented the Republican Party in an election lawsuit.
I'd like to know which case Paulose is referring to on her resume. I only found one case involving voter registration that listed Dorsey & Whitney: American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota, National Congress of American Indians, and Bonnie Dorr-Charwood, Richard Smith and Tracy Martineau, Plaintiffs, vs. Mary Kiffmeyer, in her official capacity as Secretary of State for the State of Minnesota, Defendant, Case No: 04-CV-4653 (JMR/FLN).
The case involved the question of whether Indian reservation i.d. cards issued to Indians living off the reservation was acceptable identification under Help America Vote Act even though it was acceptable under Minnesota law.
I think the overall goal here probably was to very narrowly define what constituted acceptable i.d. under HAVA but I'm not a lawyer.
Looking at Paulose's resume, my guess is that when she was appointed senior counsel to McNulty in 1/6, the decision has already been made to appoint her as USA in Minnesota.
The story as to how the DOJ found Paulose at Dorsey & Whitney and who approached who ought to be interesting.

Does anyone have any information about the status of the Jerry Lewis investigation that Yang was pursuing at the time she was hired (bribed?) off the case?
chimpeach wrote on May 9, 2007 10:21 AM:I'm glad some of you brought up Kiffmeyer. She was just one of many GOP Secretaries of State around the country whom I'd refer to as Katherine Harris wannabes. If they ever get a hold of those RNC and GWB43 e-mails sent from the White House, I won't be too surprised to see a number of them going to these SOSs giving direction on how to decrease voter turnout. Kiffmeyer was obviously being told what to do.
Heffelfinger had a good relationship with the tribes and I'm sure his refusal to help disenfranchise Indian voters probably led the DoJ to help him find the door.
