A Guilty Plea Hat Trick For Alaska

A third corruption guilty plea since last week came out of Alaska yesterday. This time, prominent lobbyist Bill Bobrick owned up to a conspiracy to bribe former state Rep. Tom Anderson, who himself was indicted on seven felony counts of bribery, extortion and money laundering in December. Last week, top executives at one of Bobrick’s client companies, VECO Corp., pled guilty to charges of bribing three state representatives and two senators. The Anchorage Daily News had the story on Bobrick this morning.
The prosecution says in court papers that Bobrick and Anderson began conspiring in July 2004. Bobrick created a sham company to funnel payments to Anderson in exchange for his doing the bidding of a private corrections company in the state Legislature, the prosecution says. Prosecutors quote Bobrick telling an informant that he and Anderson were "pitching a bunch of people" to get money for the legislator.

Bill Bobrick! There's a name that fell off my radar for a while . . . I'm glad he's getting a little o' his own back. Correcting the corrections scum.

Has this been tied at all to higher ranking officials than state legislators? I'm wondering if we'll hear soon of Alaskan congressmen complaining about unfair FBI searches. It's hard to make this out to be bigger than an Alaska scandal right now, but when these things happen in enough states, it makes the culture of corruption charge stronger, like Ohio Republicans did last year.

From the Alaska Ear:

IT’S A VERY SMALL TOWN … The Omniscient Orifice senses that summer block parties over on 11th Avenue might be a tad strained this year. Looks to map-mulling Ear like Bill Allen (the defendant) and John Sedwick (the judge) live right across the street from each other.

bobrick didn't just dole out cash to republicans. he was a big donor to the democrat Tony Knowles senate campaign. He actually secured me a place to run my GOTV out of. I liked the guy. I'm pretty disappointed to hear this. I should have known when he supported a Walmart being built across the street from a middle school.

So when are they going to unseal the indictment
on Senator A/B?

The nightly news had it nailed nailed down to three and two claimed it wasn't them, one with a familar name wasn't commenting.

why,yes, I think so....
From Anchorage Daily News paper..May 10...

"Campaign donation records also show that Veco Corp. sent tens of thousands of dollars to candidates outside Alaska, including President Bush. One of the executives, Veco founder and chief executive Bill Allen, served as state financial co-chairman in Bush's 2000 campaign.

Since 1990, Anchorage-based Veco, its employees and their family members gave the state and national Republican parties, GOP congressional candidates and Bush slightly more than $1 million, according to an analysis by the watchdog Center for Responsive Politics. Bush's 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns received a total of about $24,000 of that money.
Allen and Veco vice president Rick Smith pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to spending more than $400,000 to bribe state lawmakers. One current and two former members of the state House pleaded not guilty last week to federal charges of bribery and extortion."
