Extreme Makeover: Veco Edition

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) jacked his house off the ground, inserted a new first story and placed the old first floor on top, thanks to the help of a top executive at local oil company Veco Corp. who hired at least one key contractor to complete the feat of a job. Veco is entwined in a broad federal investigation that has led to the indictment of four current and former Alaska politicians and ensnared former Alaska Senate President Ben Stevens, son of Ted Stevens. Local press concluded that Stevens was state "Senator B," listed in the charging documents of two former Veco Corp. executives who pled guilty to federal bribery and conspiracy charges, saying they gave the younger Stevens $242,000 in illegitimate consulting fees. Neither Stevens has been charged with a crime. It’s unclear how the senior Stevens’ home doubling is connected to the broader investigation, but the Feds are now eyeing the construction job according to the Anchorage Daily News , which noticed a line in the Veco executives’ plea bargains that could link the senator to the probe:
The sentence, preceded by a listing of a dozen Veco-related enterprises around the world, said: "Veco was not in the business of residential construction or remodeling."
Maybe they dabbled.

Here on Long Island, you can tell the crooked politicians by their fancy paved driveways. Even the lowly county assemblyman around the corner from me has one.

I wonder if the Curt Weldon investigation will encompass the purchase of his home in 2000 from government contractor and big GOP donor, Frank Mongeluzzi.

Mongeluzzi, a Florida resident, made one major investment in PA real estate which happened to be the nine acres in Glen Mills that Weldon and his friends bought in 2000.

Weldon is so brazen, he claimed he sold land valued at between $100k and $250k on his official financial disclosure report. The only land Weldon sold in 2003 was three acres of the five acres his house sits on in Glen Mills and he sold the land to himself.

The Delaware County property records show Weldon owning only two acres in Glen Mills in 2003 but by 2006, Weldon was back to owning the same five acres he bought in 2000.

BTW, the Delaware County Recorder of Deeds is Thomas Judge, Sr., a long time Weldon crony.

Curt Weldon cracks me up. The guy is so crooked that when his mother died in 1996, he solicited bribes on the House floor in her memory. You can look it up!

I provided the details of Weldon's real estate transactions in a lengthy thread about him at the TPM Cafe. I linked to the thread below but be advised, it takes a couple of minutes to load.

Here is a summary of the transactions:

On 12/17/97, Mongelluzzi's company, Seminole Contracting Services Inc. of Palm Harbor FL bought 96 Tanguy Road in Glen Mills (city of Thornbury) PA for $475k from Harris SVGS Bank, according to Delaware County records.

On 12/30/99, Frank M. Mongelluzzi transferred ownership of the property at 96, 98 and 102 Tanguy Road from Seminole Contracting Services to himself.

The assesor's parcel numbers for three properties and acreage:
96 Tanguy Road - 44-00-00347-00 Acreage - 4.93.
98 Tanguy - 44-00-00347-05. Acreage is 2.32
102 Tanguy Road -44-00-00347-10. No acreage provided. Later records indicate acreage of 2.5

On 2/8/00, Mongeluzzi sold 102 Tanguy Road to Anthony S. and Cindy S. Pinnie for $135k.

On 2/25/00, Frank Mongelluzzi sold 98 Tanguy Road to Nicholas and Deborah Tymczyk for $163k.

On 3/16/00, Frank Mongelluzzi sold 96 Tanguy Road to Wayne Curtis and Mary Weldon for $440k.

In his 2003 House personal financial disclosure statement, Weldon reported that he had sold land on 8/18/03 for somewhere between $100k and $250k. But, according to Delaware County property records, the Weldons sold 96 Tanguy Road to themselves in 8/21/03 in what is described as an 'intra-family transaction" and their mortagage was refinanced for $295k.

According to the Delaware County property record documenting the 8/21/03 intra-family transaction, 96 Tanguy Road became a 2-acre parcel and not a 4.93 acre parcel as originally sold to the Weldons.

According to the 2006 Delaware County Roll Certification, the property at 96 Tanguy Road owned by Wayne Curtis and Mary Weldon is now once again 4.94 acres and the last sale date is 2003 which is somewhat misleading.

I don't know for sure if there was anything illegal about Mongelluzzi's sale of the Glen Mills property to the Weldons. But only two months before Weldon bought the property, Mongelluzzi registered two companies in PA.

Frank and Ann Mongelluzzi are in the temporary labor businss in a big way and appear to be doing a lot of business in NOLA since Katrina. In 9/06, Ann Mongelluzzi donated $28k to the RNC.

There might be nothing more than coincidence to Mongeluzzi's sale to Weldon but this is the same Curt Weldon who coincidentally sold his DC house to a member of the Kuwaiti royal family and at least one of Weldon's mortgages seems to have just disappeared into thin air.

Weldon's 2003 sale of the Glen Mills property doesn't make sense. On the surface, it looks like the Weldons merely re-mortgaged their property but if that is the case, why were the Delco property records changed? Keep in mind that Thomas Judge Sr, a long time Weldon crony, is the Delco Recorder of Deeds.

Weldon did not report owning any other property other than his residence in Glen Mills after 2001 in his official personal financial disclosure reports. The Glen Mills transaction has to be the one he referred to in his 2003 report.

As an aside, I think the Glen Mills sale was the one that real estate agent-turned-lobbyist, Cecelia Grimes, was supposed to have handled for the Weldons. Grimes who is attractive, blonde, and fortyish, was appointed to the board of a state commission in 1997 for a three-year ter, according to her online bio.

Grimes and Rep. C. W. Bill Young's daughter-in-law, Cynthia Young have been busy women. They are partners in a lobbying firm and executives of defense contractor, Galaxy Scientific, according to FEC records.

Frank Mongelluzzi only registered Seminole Contracting Services Inc in Pennsylvania on 12/15/97, two days before Seminole Contracting bought the Tanguy Road property. He registered Able Lumber and Supply Inc. and Professional Staffing - A.B.T.S., Inc. in Pennsylvania on 1/27/00, two months before he sold property to Weldon.

John S@May 29, 2007 03:47 PM - The grand jury was reportedly convened in the Weldon investigation in May 2006 and supposedly only covered Weldon's involvement with the Karic family and two Russian companies, Saratov Aviation and Itera.

Either the DOJ is stalling like hell or the scope of the Weldon investigation has been significantly expanded. In either case, there have been no leaks since October.

The story in the press related to new information about the Weldon case was a pair of 11/06 Philadelphia Inquirer stories which focused on Weldon's crony, John J. Gallagher who is also under investigation in the Weldon case.

As was reported by the Inquirer, Gallagher set up a phony company, CSG Software, in 10/01 to take advantage of a DOE program and obtain a contract to re-train Russian nuclear weapons scientists. My research indicates that Weldon knew CSG existed only on paper.

The Inquirer story came out at the end of November 2006. Two weeks later on December 12, AG Gonzales visited the basement of the Delco courthouse ostensibly in connection with a children's internet safety program. There, he met with USA-EDPA Pat Meehan and Delco DA Green. Meehan himself is a former Delco DA and, as such, knows where the bodies are buried.

I don't think it would be easy for Gonzales to cover up the Weldon investigation now because too many people already know a lot about Weldon's shady deals.

Take Weldon's deal with Mongelluzzi. An ordinary person in Delco can't verify that Weldon actually paid Mongelluzzi for the Glen Mills property but he or she could check when Weldon's house was built, who built it and how much it would have cost at the time.

Delco property records online do not provide that information, only that the Weldons have a pool. But I would imagine that information has to be officially on record somewhere.

BTW, as I recently documented in a TPM Cafe thread (link below), Weldon is up to his old tricks by selling his influence to the Bangladesh government. This time, he is working for the "Global Alliance for Homeland Security" which is being run out of an apartment in Queens, NY.

As I said, Curt Weldon cracks me up. He is like an Energizer bunny gone bad in that he keeps going and going, no mattwer what. The guy is under federal investigaton and he is still screwing around with foreign governments.

Grimes and Young made their contributions to Rep. Robert Young's campaign as Galaxy Scientific execs on 9/10/04 along
with several other GS execs, according to FEC records. (I used PoliticalMoneyLine.com for my search - link below.)

My guess is that an admin type at GS took names of execs from payroll records and sent off the contributions to Young's office. GS execs were regular contributors to Young and Weldon for years.

The question is whether Grimes and Young were real GS employees or no-shows. No one in the press ever reported that Grimes and Young were GS employees which would have been big news, given the amount of contributions Weldon received from GS.

The Grimes and Young GS contributions were hard to pick out because one, Cynthia Young is a common name and two, Cecelia Grimes' name is mispelled as Cecilia.

SRA was another big contributor to Weldon, btw.

That being said, like Mrs. P I am from Long Island...."Crookhaven"....also known as Brookhaven. New York has nothing on Alaska. This is the most corrupt place I have ever seen. Only where New Yorkers still realize that corruption is wrong, Alaskans just accept it as normal. Very surreal to hear locals say "yeah we know Young and Stevens are crooked, but they bring so much money into the state, so what if they take a little?"

Until Alaskans decide they want to clean up the place, it will stay the dirtiest state in America.

hey daCascadian, enough with the hyperactive troll patrol. Don't know if you read the beginning of the thread, but my previous comment about people in Seattle jacking houses all the time was a response to the earlier comment by Yellow Dog at 1:50 saying nobody ever jacks up a house because it's too expensive. I made no comment at all suggesting there was nothing wrong with it being paid for by an oil services company. Yet you run straight to "old white men drinking Kool-Aid." Let's not turn into the thought police ourselves or anything.

Trolls such as Jason are sad little dreamers...pretending to be a volunteer in the Fourth Reich's Gestapo...spewing his hate in schoolyard terms...master of all he can type...striking fear into all rational Americans who cling to the antiquated ideals of the Enlightenment ...the Rule Of Law...the Constitution and other such obsolete notions. Can't you see him now...goosestepping around his bedroom (inMom's house), Wagner playing though his delusions, saluting his fuhrer ...Busholini.

Republicans should never forget to take their meds.

There is lots of corruption in Congress.

You guys would seem more honest if you went after both sides.

Corruption is not a partisan issue. I want Stevens to feel the heat. And Wm. "Cold Cash" Jefferson.

You might want to look into Murtha's "charities" as well.

I really would like to see the most honest Congress in history.

Ted has a whole closet full of skeletons involving self dealing and passing the tax bucks to his friends and back. This house deal is small potatos.

Using methods honed by Duke Cunningham, we can all hope that Ted winds up in the same slammer as the Dukester. Couldn't happen to a more deserving piece of slime.

Agree with the commenter who pointed out that it's a near-miracle, given the way that Bush/Cheney have staffed the federal government, that any of these indictments is happening at all. I really tip my hat to some of the unsung law enforcement folks who are going after white collar crime.

Ted Stevens is practically a god in Alaska. And if the human species lives long enough, he'll be reviled as among the most feckless, corrupt leaders contributing to Global Warming and environmental degradation that ever walked this earth. But he and his pals have done this for so long, on a scale so big, that they think it's completely 'normal'.

The Ted Stevens International Airport in Anchorage is one of the premier airports in the U.S. And it really drives home how well he's served ExxonMobil and his other true employers.

He's in a 2007 world, but his mindset is still stuck in the WayBack Machine in about 1944. The sooner his ilk get cleared out of the system and stop feeding at the public trough, the better.

As Rick said, there are plenty of us who've voted for any number of Republicans who are p*ssed as hell at how carelessly they've squandered and stolen our national treasures, making life for future generations very, very difficult. Ted Stevens is a prime example of unaccountable power with too damn much money behind it. The man is a walking embodiment of the generation whose heads are still stuck in a John Wayne movie, while we're getting our asses kicked by something out of a cheap, Chinese martial arts movie.

The sooner this entire generation of feckless, corporatist fools is gone from political decision-making, the better for our environment and our kids.

Ted Stevens embodies the pillaging of natural resources by corporate management and shareholders, for a 'quickie' ROI -- at a greater cost to our health and environment than we can probably stand to think about.

The fact that he's 'the norm' and has been so 'successful' tells you everything you really need to know.

Rick in AK has plenty of company on the political sentiments; the corruption has gotten so completely out of hand that even a few cynics I know are outraged. And given the amount of good Matanuska dope those cynics have smoked through the years, that is really saying something.
