Bush Ducks Question on Rove Role in U.S.A. Firings

From McClatchy's interview with President Bush:

Q How central a role did Rove play in the U.S. attorney business? That's what everybody wants to know. Was he the main guy drawing up the list?

THE PRESIDENT: Just look at the facts as they've come out.

Q It's unclear.

THE PRESIDENT: There has been plenty of testimony, plenty of hearings, plenty of statements. And one thing is for certain, that there was no wrongdoing done. And --

McClatchy's Ron Hutcheson mercifully moved on to another topic.

Sojourner wrote on May 30, 2007 11:28 AM:

I just like the fact that someone had the cojones to ask Bush the question, instead of so much of the MSM dancing around things... Way to go McClatchy!

Anonymous wrote on May 30, 2007 11:32 AM:

Maybe someone should also ask why Rove wasn't fired for divulging Valerie Plame's identity. Isn't that what W promised?

Was Rove the Decider here, or was Bush?

If it was Bush, he may be happy to leave the impression that it was Rove.

Remember old school 60 Minutes when Mike Wallace was like a dog with a bone when it came to questioning crooks. I wish reporters would get back to that. Screw this moving on bs- keep asking until you get a straight answer. That's your job.

"It's unclear." No kidding? That's exactly what Bosch wants. Unclarity, as he would say. Same lies, different day.

neo1 wrote on May 30, 2007 12:14 PM:

I agree, hurray for McClatchy for all they've done in the past, but I am so sick of endless scenario's of no follow-up questions whether it be in presidential debates, 9/11 Omission Commission hearings, Congressional hearings, or press interviews -- I'm convinced nothing will happen until these lying ____'s are forced to face up to their lies in public. Why is that so hard?

Crust wrote on May 30, 2007 12:25 PM:

It's all about source greasing. The basic problem with aggressively following up is that it will make that the last presidential interview Bush grants that reporter and perhaps his news org.

Bottom line: We need to change the media culture to create a countervailing force against the obsequious courting of sources. Source greasers need to be aggressively called on it, at least the worst offenders. But it's hard to know where to start with such a pervasive phenomenon.

Jane wrote on May 30, 2007 12:26 PM:

Also ask whether he called Mrs. Ashcroft to set up the Gonzales ICU visit. And if so, for what purpose?

Kreine wrote on May 30, 2007 12:47 PM:

"there was no wrongdoing done"

wtf - at the very least, career position applicants were evaluated on the basis of their political affiliation = illegal.

illegal = wrongdoing

It pisses me off that journalists don't call out the lies for what they are

west wrote on May 30, 2007 12:52 PM:

I agree with Crust's assessment, but I think there is more to it than just that. It's rather obvious why the news media is the way it is today. Consolidation of media ownership.

GE (NBC, MSNBC, CNBC), a defense/government contractor is not going to piss off their customer (Bushco) with probing news organizations. I won't waste time discussing News Corp (FOX), other than the name is a metaphor for the current state of the industry. Viacom (CBS) and Disney (ABC) has a vested interest in keeping cable TV deregulated...

Not to mention that the vast majority of the board members and management for each of these organizations is Republican and they have a fiduciary responsibility to their own pockets to keep them lined with the gold provided by those in power.

Media consolidation is the cause. Bush's leverage on the media, as Crust points out is the result.

These guys suck up to the president because that's how they get access. If they are critical and are considered to be a pain in the ass for the White House, poof!, access denied. Soon, all there is is Fox News, who worships the Chimp.
And it's worked very well for the president.

John S wrote on May 30, 2007 2:06 PM:

Follow up questions for this president? You've got to be kidding me, and that's not a shot at the press. If Bosch persisted, he would have received a polite but forceful "This interview is over" response, that would not have allowed him to ask any more questions. Furthermore, had he persisted, it is unlikely he would have had an opportunity to question the man again. As it was, he moved on to ask a couple of questions about Iraq. Good for him. That's about the best he'll get.

What do TPM readers want from a Bush interview? Truth? Honesty? Integrity? These concepts don't resonate with Bush. The best you can hope for is having the president on record saying something that he may want to deny later.

But, when all that the Bush Administration is peddling is bull manure, why would any reporter want access to it?

Leta wrote on May 30, 2007 3:18 PM:

I disagree - if asked over and over again, and then the Chimpster abruptly says "you guys are being mean" and walks off - It'll be all over the MSM - yes, they'll cover the waaa. Paint the SOB in the corner....every day, all day long. Christ all they have to do is watch some Helen reruns if they don't know how to dog him.

The Oracle wrote on May 30, 2007 11:20 PM:

The statement "there was no wrongdoing done" is often the last resort of scoundrels trying to cover-up that "wrongdoing" was in fact done.

Outing a covert CIA officer: "there was no wrongdoing done." (A caller to Air America today used these words to try to defend what treasonous top White House officials did).

Starting a war in Iraq based on falsified intelligence and lying to the American public: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Awarding no-bid contracts to crony Republican companies: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Firing U.S. Attorneys over specious voter fraud claims: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Hiring entry-level DOJ attorneys based on their partisan political affiliation: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Giving billions of dollars of taxpayer money to partisan religious groups and individuals, in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Blowing off the Geneva Conventions: "there was no wrongdoing done."

Purging voters off voter rolls across our nation for purely partisan political purposes (i.e. stealing elections): "there was no wrongdoing done."

Starting war with Iran: "there was no wrongdoing done." (Oh wait, that's still on the neo-con Republican "to-do" list, especially Cheney's).

Whew, that's just to name a few of Republican wrongdoing. The list goes on and on and on and on.

I'm certain the devil will bend a sympathetic horned ear to all the Republicans arriving in hell who state "there was no wrongdoing done," before he breaks out into diabolical, hysterical laughter.
