Stevens Not A Target, Investigation Still a Problem
Yesterday we talked about how Sen. Ted Stevens’ (R-AK) home improvement project has piqued the interest of federal investigators.
A local oil company’s involvement in hiring one of the contractors who built the new level to Stevens’ single-story home -- underneath the existing ground floor – seems to be the questionable part.
The Associated Press followed up today on the story by adding that two sources close to the investigation said “Stevens was not considered a target of the investigation.”
That won't comfort Sen. Stevens.
The carefully-crafted language "I'm not a target" has been peddled by other politicians tied to investigations, like former Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT) and Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA).
The phrase makes the politician sound practically exhonerated, when really, prosecutors tend to wait to send out a “target” letter until shortly before an indictment is issued. (Feel like pleading guilty? Now's your chance.) Former number two at the Interior Department J. Steven Griles was named a target in the Abramoff scandal in January; he pled guilty to lying to Congress in March.
It’s not clear how entwined Stevens is in the investigation, which has already led to the indictment of four current and former state officials. Two top executives from the oil company at the heart of the controversy, Veco Corp., pled guilty to conspiracy and bribery charges this month.
But, both the AP and the Anchorage Daily News mentioned a search in the ski-resort town of Girdwood, where Stevens’ newly doubled home sits.
From The Anchorage Daily News:
The wide-ranging federal inquiry surfaced in August when agents raided six legislative offices, including those of then-Senate President Ben Stevens, one of Ted Stevens' sons. The FBI said at the time that it also had executed a search warrant in Girdwood, among other places, although the location of that search has never been officially disclosed. The FBI hasn’t said what it searched, but the list of possibilities isn’t very long. Take a look at a map of Girdwood, population 2,000:

Conrad Burns was a Republican Senator for the state of Montana. I was on the Hill in the mid-90's with a group of students. Conrad was supposed to be speaking to the children from Montana. There happened to be some sort of civil rights legislation coming to the floor for a vote. He announced to the children with a wad of tobacco between his lip and gum that he couldn't talk to them because he had to go to a "slave auction."
I had never been so embarrassed in my entire life. He was and is a defilement of this country and the great state of Montana. I left the state at the end of the school year. Unfortunately the "cowboys" kept electing the fool.

I don't think people in the "lower 48" can really understand how powerful he is and how much he means to the State of Alaska. It is so isolated up there and he brings billions of dollars and jobs back home. If you look under anything up there- and I mean anything- his name is on it. I can't stand the guy, but he could be caught eating babies and he would still get elected.

That's a pretty sh**y house for a Senator.

I wasn't aware that he was even able to enter the United States, either -- but I do like some of his earlier music, though.
Wha -- *Ted* Stevens? I though you said *Cat* Stevens! My mistake.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20070529/cheney-secrecy/
The Sept. 13, 2006, letter from Cheney's lawyer says logs for Cheney's residence on the grounds of the Naval Observatory are subject to the Presidential Records Act.
The letter regarding the vice president's residence was in addition to an agreement quietly signed between the White House and the Secret Service a year ago when questions were raised about visits to the executive compound by convicted influence peddler Jack Abramoff.
That agreement, which didn't surface publicly until late last year, said White House entry and exit logs were presidential records not subject to disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.
When the agreement was signed in May 2006, a number of private groups and news organizations had filed FOIA requests with the Secret Service in an effort to identify how many times Abramoff or members of his lobbying team visited the White House.

Robin Boerner wrote on May 30, 2007 10:44 PM:Ted may not be a target yet but at least some of the as of yet not arrested politicians up here are nervous. My fiance' got a phone call last weekend from an Alaskan politician looking for a personal character reference that he worked on their campaign....over FOUR years ago. Hasn't even talked to him in two years. Not since the US Army declared my fiance' AWOL from a military command center in a time of war and accused him of stealing CLASSIFIED documents.
John went to THIS SAME politican for a character reference two years ago and was told this little scuzzball couldn't get involved because shady suit guys were asking questions related to the charges. Now John is suing the US Army in federal court and the Alaska Report did a story on the ordeal..
The Alaskan politicans must be scrapping barrel to be calling guys they fucked two years ago for character references.
Of course I am truly proud my fiance told him to go pound salt. I hope all the others he must have called did the same.

salmonshark wrote on May 31, 2007 6:38 AM:This is what I put in front of the court 9/05 a year before the Labor Day raids:
[Most recently the Senate president Ben Stevens has been petitioned for recall, and has allegations of conflict of interest in several of his business dealings including Aleutian Spray Seafoods / Adak Fisheries Pollock allotmentslegislated by his father, and VECO, the Alaska Pipeline contractorwhich is wanting legislation that robs the Permanent Fund, and several other questionable consulting relationships. This is all available online and the Plaintiff would ask that the Ninth Circuit reviews some of this material to be familiar with the Legislature's ethics committee leader and his concept of ethics and what the plaintiff has described as the "existance of a crisis" in a Motion for Preliminary Injunctionand as it may apply to the case before the court.] [copious amounts of newspaper articles and Department of Law opinions relating to Ben Stevens' recall petition, etc. Anchorage Daily News, Juneau Empire and Los Angeles newspapers are a good source.]
[The Plaintiff visited the Department of Labor in Seattle to relate the apparent collusion between Management and Union in March of 2005. Special Agents in the Racketeering section explained was not with individual complaints or collusion. The Agents said they could investigate Retirement Fraud. The Plaintiff expressed that considering the apparent level of corruption that there would likely be some evidence of pension robbing as characteristic of corruption. After a week or so the Plaintiff sent articles of the retirement fund deficit which was growing at a rate of 1.7 million a day for the first 1000 days of the Murkowski Anministration, and at approximately minus $700,000 per current employee. This would seem to be criminal negligence.]
That's what the Ninth Circuit had to look at in Sept 2005. Someone must have read it, and considered my request for the Federal Grand Jury to procede.
