Lute Backpedals on Hadley

Lute is sure to be confirmed as war czar. But the testimony the Senate Armed Services Committee clearly wishes it had is that of National Security Adviser Steve Hadley. Under questioning from Sen. John Warner (R-VA) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Lieutenant General Doug Lute furiously backpedaled from his earlier statement that Hadley won't be the president's principal adviser on Iraq:

Apparently unconvinced, Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) got Lute to explain that he'll be the one who prepares President Bush's daily brief on Iraq -- but, he added, he'll "coordinate" that effort with Hadley. Since Bush famously prefers to be briefed in person, that's at least one area where Hadley loses out. Someone should hire a coordinator. Oh, wait...

Can we just go ahead and create the "George W. Bush Medal of Incompetence" that rewards those who demonstrate incompetence, ineffectuality, or flat-out stupidity in the pursuit of one's job responsibilities?

The really sad thing about all this - remember back in 2002 and 2003 when there was so much debate about the possibility that 9/11 could have been prevented? The Administration consistently denied any form of culpability, responsibility, or negligence. Given what we have seen since that time, with flat-out failure (I can’t think of another good term) a so many levels, is it not reasonable to think that this utter incompetence, this unmitigated disaster of government might have had something to do with Administration’s ability to recognize and address a threat? I do.

"The question in my mind is not to what extent can we force them or lever them to a particular outcome but rather to what degree do they actually have the capacity themselves to produce that outcome," Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

I think that Lute is competent and honest and did an exceptional job in his prior positions. He has the background and larger perspective to at least assess the circumstances accurately.

I think that his title 'CZAR' suggests 'cronyism' in connection with some of the Neocons whom made such a mess that he is now left to address.

Remember that title was the rhetoric of some political idiot and has little to do with what in actuallity Lute is dealing with.

Keep in mind that Tursday when the decision is made on Libby that an individual worthy of scorn, ridicule, and humiliation will be in the news.

Lute does not deserve the political attacks and frankly i was surprised that anyone took the position. Attacking Lute is not part of any solution but instead misplaced anger and 'internal public consumption' political dribble.

Lute is OK and not at all a bad guy... he just has to figure a way to fix what was not screwed up, or crapped upon by his predecessor.

Dee Illuminati - I do not know if you were directing the Lute defense toward me. I poking Hadley, not Lute. If Hadley could actually do his job (as all other NSA's have been able to, even in time of war) there would be no need for a War Czar. The proper way to "fix" the situation would be to fire the (obviously) incompetent Hadley and replace him with Lute.

Of course, Hadley would then have to be awarded the "George W. Bush Medal of Incompetence" for his persistant, entrenched, and above-average incompetence.

If Hadley cannot or will not do his job, why not dump him and make Lute Def Sec? Why the H*** are they creating a new, redundant, job? Congress should tell them to forget it.

rusty.. Lute is a smart guy.. his study at war college was un line with Jared Diamond's Collapse which will probably be received in literature along with his first pulitzer winner as insightful as to why stuff works or it doesn't in 'nation building.' One damn thing for sure.. Lute's job or that of gates would be easier if they were in no way connected with the cast of idiots generally refered to as Neocons. Gates and Lute are OK.. but the mess that they inherieted, that SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN started.. is problematic to use understatement...

When we abandon the political rhetoric of the 'war on terror' and start calling the circumstances 'humanitarian relief' yeah the tough admittance that Chalabi was wrong when he said that "We are heros in error"

This nation and the region might have a framework for a political discourse that could garner international support from say: Jordan, Turkey, Saudia Arabia, and other nations in the region and the G8.

The actual acts that started this war did not oiginate with Lute and frankly considering the circumstances, I think it safe to say that at least Lute is "reality based" instead of groupthink based as the Neocons were.

When you stop and think of it... Kosovo was a much more cleaner and well managed operation from the political palayability perspective because we were 'the good guys.'
