Rove Comments On Siegelman Prosecution
White House strategist Karl Rove has been markedly quiet on the subject of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman (D), despite being accused of orchestrating a political prosecution that now stands to land the former lawmaker in prison for 30 years.
A reporter from The Huntsville Times caught Rove on Thursday on a visit to the state with President Bush. The reporter asked Rove about the allegations made by a Republican lawyer in a sworn affidavit (available here). The lawyer, Dana Jill Simpson, claims that on a conference call in 2002, a GOP strategist said he and Rove spoke about having the Department of Justice investigate Siegelman purely to get him out of the way.
Rove's response (with a smile) to such an explosive accusation:
"I know nothing about any phone call," Rove said. Then a White House press aide stepped up and said, "What he meant to say was that he has no comment."
No one has accused of Rove of being involved in the call -- just that his name was mentioned in it.
Siegelman was convicted last year of appointing a chief executive of a health care company, Richard Scrushy, to a hospital board in exchange for a $500,000 contribution to an education fund. Siegelman's sentencing hearing is scheduled for tomorrow. The prosecution seeks a 30 year prison term.

Why is this not bigger news?

Why is there no special prosecuter working on this DOJ case yet? There should be a grand jury someplace compling information on the misuse of this department, but instead we have to rely on a reporter from the huntsville alabama paper to get this information into the public realm?
How far does Rove have to go before something happens? Are we waiting on a citizens arrest or something?
Can we bring back the three martini lunch? News like this makes me think I need one. Oh, and forgive me if I don't get excited this time.

I only wish the republican lawbreakers got the same aggressive sentencing suggestions. A few 20-30 yr penalties might just save the taxpayer a few hundred billion dollars this next few years. It might also add some support for our now struggling democracy...

Jane, Thanks for the link to Scott Horton's Harper article, "Justice in Alabama" - link below. Horton does a terrific job explaining how Siegelman was framed.
I hope Laura McGann takes a look Horton's story.

Is Rove's answer supposed to be a reference to the line in Gone With the Wind about "I don't know nothin' about birthin' babies"? If so, very strange sense of humor.

Mrs Panstreppon,
My life is richer since I found Scott Horton's blog. He discusses the news in a historical, classical, literary context -- he teaches me far more than current events. But his and the other outstanding blogs that challenge what's happening in this country, have too narrow an audience.
Blogs are great, but they fail to reach a lot of well-meaning people who, because they're seriously misinformed, are part of the problem.
It's very frustrating when my neighbors -- wonderful people -- believe that they're getting the news when they listen to talk radio, and form their opinions accordingly. And connecting them to the internet is unrealistic.
Blogs are written and read by a lot of smart, monied, well-connected people. I wish they would devise ways to reach red-necks like my neighbors and myself --

I think you're doing a great job of widening Scott Horton's reach. I'd never read (nor heard of) his blog before, but I think I'm already hooked. He's a transcendent writer, too -- I feel a little more in love with the true ideals of our country after reading that entry.
Thanks for sharing the link.

Bush was at the Brown's Ferry Nuclear plant in Athens, Al on the 21st to do a photo-op and talk up Nuclear Power. There was a small number of protesters on hand. Huntsville and Athens are DOD contractor towns which no doubt tended to kept that number small.

The Siegelman fiasco makes it look like going after Democratic state elected officials - and not just after (mostly minority) voters likely to lean Democratic - might have been part of the scheme.
is it only Alabama? What about Wisconsin?
While some seem to feel that Wisconsin's USA Steve Biskupic is a good guy (http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/013959.php)
. . . you have to ask, did he keep his job because he went after an employee in the (Democratic) Wisconsin governor's administration, in a case with evidence the federal Ct of Appeals called "beyond thin" - fervently hoping to get her to rat out the governor, during a hotly contested race last fall.

are there other Democratic state officials prosecuted by USAs in the past few years? I think it would be worth checking into.

Don Siegelman was a wonderful governor, and his opponents have gone through the years of his political service in as detailed a manner as could be done. Please read the background on this case and pass on this heartbreaking story. Siegelman and his wife, Lori, dedicated their lives to promoting education, business, and the arts in Alabama. He started the Reading Initiative Program that has been so successful in Alabama and across the nation. See the link below for latest reports; however, don’t expect to see any credit given to him in the report. To learn that he started the program, you will have to go to the second link. The article at the AL state archives lists facts about his achievements, such as bringing four major car industries to AL during his administration. His success is what angered his opponents because the people in Alabama loved him and elected him in an overwhelmingly Republican state.
