Florida County Threatened With Loss Of Fed Funding, Again

When Rep. Don Young (R-AK) dishes out pork, it sticks.

After Lee County twice tried to return a mysterious $10 million earmark for an unwanted Coconut Road Interchange, Rep. Don Young (R-AK) warned the Florida county that it was jeopardizing receiving federal funds in the future. Lee County faces a similar fate again, after voting to return the $10 million to Congress in hopes of getting it reauthorized for a broader (and wanted) project.

The News Press reports that the Florida Department of Transportation will not approve the county's budget through 2012 unless it overturns the reauthorization vote and allows more time for public comment on the issue.

Locals who want the county to forge on with the $10 million extra-Constitutional project, like, say, those married to developers who pushed for the deal, should have a fair shake at voicing their opinion.

Why hasn't someone suggested to Young that it is time to check into rehab and resign . . .

Why hasn't someone suggested to Stevens that it is time to check into rehab and resign . . .

Why hasn't someone suggested to Craig that it is time to check into rehab and resign . . .

Almost unbelievable. Almost.

You'd think that Young, being in a billion watt spotlight, might want to back off. Nope. If thats not the epitome of hubris....

I wonder who told Stanley Cann with FDOT to write that letter to the MPO. I might have to call the FDOT District 1 office at (863) 519-2201 to inquire why he wrote the letter.

The woman who answered did not know anything about the earmarked money, she was only answering Mr. Cann's phone because he was at a meeting in Orlando. I left my name and number for him to return my call.

So what if the MPO rejected the money the wrong way, it was earmarked the wrong way.

Rep. Young could learn a thing or two from that champion of pork, Representative Ron Paul:

According to the Houston Chronicle:
"Ron Paul leads the Houston-area delegation in the number of earmarks, or special funding requests, that he is seeking for his district. He is trying to nab public money for 65 projects, such as marketing wild shrimp and renovating the old movie theater in Edna that closed in 1977 — neither of which is envisioned in the Constitution as an essential government function.

Ron Paul loves to dole out the pork, and he loves making taxpayers in California and Massachusetts pay for pork projects in his district. No one in southeast Texas is better at distributing pork. Oink oink, Ron Paul!"

Are you telling me there's no one on Cap Hill asking this very, very obvious question:

Why in hell does the guy from Alaska want to be so deeply involved with an obscure road in FL, if it's NOT bribes/kickbacks/corruption??? I've seen blantantly corrupt moves before, but this one is on a different level altogether.

What if the R in FL starting lobbying for a bridge to nowhere in Alaska? WTF?

C'mon, y'all - this is South Florida we're talking about.

The place that inspired Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry. Both of whom would be the first to tell you that their novels of South Florida insanity, far from being exaggerations, are actually severely toned-down versions of the truth.

Wait 'till the bodies turn up. Then we'll have some fun.

Punchy, the only thing I can think of that could connect Florida and Alaska would be oil. A lot of people would like to drill for oil off Florida's coast and I'm sure there are some companies in business in Alaska that would like an advantage in case congress ever allows drilling.

I received a call from Stanley Cann a little while ago from Orlando. Stanley said he decided to write the letter to the MPO because the MPO did not properky advertise the meeting as required by Florida law. He agreed that it would be best if Congress adressed the issue with new legislation restoring the funds to the I=75 widening project as intended before Rep. Young added the Coconut Rd. earmark.

It is not necessarily as bad as it looks. The problem is that any decision made by the county is subject to judicial review. It looks as if the way in which the decision was made might well create grounds for an appeal.

Telling the county that it has to perform a re-do is not going to cause the money to be spent on Coconut Road. By the time the public comments are in Congress will have reallocated the money and the issue will be moot.

I can't believe it!
"Rep. Don Young (R-AK) warned the Florida county that it was jeopardizing receiving federal funds in the future?"
Who is in charge here?
How can this man steal 10 million dollars from us and still be standing. Does anyone care about us, they take our hard earned money and toss it around as though it has no real value, except in some sort of reverse money laundering scheme, where they send a whole lot to the laundry and get a paltry sum back. They sell us cheap.

How can he be so bold as to threaten law abiding citizens. Will this developer really still profit from his bribe?
Where is Nancy Pelosi, why isn't this man kicked out of House Membership? They really think they are an insulated in their little club don't they?

Is there a picture of Rep. Young next to the definition of "douchebag" in the dictionary?
