AP: FBI Launches Investigation of Blackwater Shooting

To the rapidly growing number of overlapping probes of Blackwater (some more probing than others), you can add this one:

Amid questions of reckless behavior by U.S contractors, the FBI is sending a team to Iraq to investigate the role of Blackwater USA in last month's shoot-out in Baghdad that killed 11 Iraqis, an FBI spokesman said Monday.

FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko said the agency was making the move at the request of the State Department to examine evidence in the Sept. 16 shooting and to pursue possible criminal charges in light of allegations that guards working for Blackwater might have shot innocent Iraqi citizens.

"The results of the investigation will be reviewed for possible criminal liability and referred to the appropriate legal authority," Kolko said.

now this old chicken walks up to the new kid and mentions how he can avoid the ax, when a thermonuclear warhead is found under the hen house.
why not ask the slug to investigate the snail?

Did I read this right? The State Dept. requests an FBI investy? The same State that let the inital "report" be written by the accused themselves? The same State that continues to use Blackwater in the face of Iraqi opposition? The same State that supports them monetarily, politically, and publicly?

I'm sure THIS will be a thorough investy. I'll bet 3 days, a cloud of smoke, and complete exoneration of every employee.

And that would be what appropriate legal authority?

Coupled with the letter of 7 Republican Congressmen asking Waxman to hold off until the State Department and FBI can complete their investigation, the FBI investigation sounds like a huge Republican cover-up in the works.

I'm more concerned about Blackwaters' ambitions in the US. I dont like fanatic Christo-fascist armies being legitimized by bushco to operate in the US in lieu of Nat'l Guard. Actually I don't like anything at all about privatizing the Defense department.
Its just another end run on accountability.

They'll get right on it...as soon as they figure out who sent all that anthrax through the mail.

Annonymus: Of course we need to delay the Waxman investigation--it can't be held tomorrow! You should never conduct an investigation until all the facts are in.

We hired Blackwater to help our troops so criticizing Blackwater is the same as criticizing our troops. Besides, there are top secret issues that we can't talk about.

Have you seen the news that Brittany Spears lost custody of the kids? THAT's the interesting story today.

Okay...

The FBI is going to investigate Blackwater for possible criminal activity.

They will spend a few million dollars investigating.

The State Department has already exonerated Blackwater from all criminal liability.

Anyone want to guess the FBI result?

This is so transparent, it's laughable...and really, really sad.

A hearing into Blackwater's criminal acts over in Iraq is scheduled in Congress.

The Bush administration's State Department announces that the FBI is starting an investigation into Blackwater.

Initially, the indication was that Waxman would need a subpoena to drag Blackwater's hardly-Christian owner, Erik Prince, before Congress. But now, and following the announcement of an FBI investigation into Blackwater, Erik Prince will now testify.

But what will he say?

Who wants to bet that Erik Prince will appear and refuse to say anything, claiming that it would be inappropriate for him to comment while there is an "ongoing investigation." Game. Set. Match.

And the FBI investigation will last until Bush either is impeached or leaves office in January 2009. Thus, Erik Prince won't have to testify meaninfully and truthfully before Congress for a long, long time.

I'm certain one the Republican crackpot lawyers in the most corrupt administrations in American history came up with this scam.

well, I guess this means the FBI definitely can't be trusted. If State is willing to turn it over to them, then they must be corrupt.

The *boy king* employs a mercenary named *Prince* - Can it get any better?

Dumb question time: The connection between Eric Prince, Betsy [Elizabeth Prince] DeVos [Mrs. Richard, jr.] and Rep. Hoekstra seems very obvious. Is this more than just Holland, MI, political donations, conservative religionists, and possible access to Select Intel Comm.?

I think moondancer's got it right...the domestic implications (new orleans on a grand(er) scale) are appalling. What ever happened to bigwigs going to prison?

pointus wrote on October 2, 2007 9:02 AM:

Perhaps Special Agent Rampton will be in charge?

Jolly Ranchero wrote on October 2, 2007 9:05 AM:

"baseless allegations"? He's really going to say this? Considering the Iraqis have video, have anger, and have dead civies on their streets all based on BW, you'd think he'd be more contrite.

I have a feeling a few of the Iraqi militias may use this disrespect to incite something really, really bad.

Mafalda Hopkirk wrote on October 2, 2007 9:27 AM:

Yes. Domestic Implications. Martial law being declared anyone? I used to think it couldn't happen with the troops pinned down in Iraq. But with mercenaries, beholden only to cheney/bush? makes you wonder...

king george... prince erik... and the curious combination of erik the gay hater alongside condi the rumored lesbian? And all that republican money!

we live in interesting times....

After a careful investigation, the FBI will disclose that all the eyewitnesses were "enemy combatants" and send them off to Gitmo.

What about Blackwater's Bahamian subsidiary Greystone Ltd.? Are they active in Iraq?
