House Panel Holds Hearing on Voting Rights Section

The hearing, broadcast on C-SPAN 3 and streaming on the House Judiciary Committee's website, just got under way. Voting rights section chief John "They Die First" Tanner is, of course, the star witness.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) kicked it off with, "We're in a crisis, and it's the duty of this committee to determine what went wrong."

This is unbelievable. This man is beyond ill prepared he is incompetent. He doesn't know anything. Keith Ellison and Artur Davis have filleted him. How the Repubs will defend him is beyond me.

Never stops amazing me how ill prepared someone like Tanner is to testify- I'd have all stats pertinent to whatever was in my opening statement @ my fingertips. This indicates incompetence, indifference, or both.

BTW, HJC hearing in a brief recess now for voting. Let's see if Tanner gets one of his staff to shoot him some pertinent stats or other info on what's been asked so far. I'm not holding my breath...

I confess, I would love to see Tanner sweating under merciless grillings and make a fool of himself, one more time!
Another alumni of the "Alberto Gonzalez School of Preparedness"...

I'm surprised how awful and unprepared he is. It almost sounded like he was beinging to cry at times. Even the GOP wasn't very friendly to him, Pence excluded.

I don't find his ill-preparedness surprising as a tactic. Remember, the GOP doesn't punish incompetence, they punish disloyalty.

It's far easier to say "I don't know" 50 times than to duel on policy with a barrage of congressmen, some of whom are knowledgeable and actually support the policies Tanner is supposed to execute (but instead undermines).

Conyers calling for an additional hearing on this subject. Absolutely- we need to hear from Tanner again, too many loose ends from his testimony. Plus HJC & SJC both need to make clear that the Gonzales et al era of fumbling the ball under direct questioning in these hearings is unacceptable & over.

Bring all these witnesses back. And, get on the ball to ENFORCE THOSE SUBPOENAS that are still pending, dammit.

Just a tale from the Voting Section to highlight the character, or lack thereof, of Acting Deputy Chief of Section 5, YVETTE RIVERA. A black staffer noticed that her toaster was missing. She sent around an email to the Section, asking if anyone had seen it. Some staffers consequently learned that an intern took the toaster, after being told by RIVERA that he could, even though it was not hers to give. Now when the email went around asking for the toaster, and when a note was placed on the bulletin board, a normal, moral person would send an email to the staffer saying "oh, I'm so sorry I did not realize that belonged to you, and I gave an intern permission to take it. Let me know how much it cost, and I will be happy to replace it." That is what I would do, and what I assume you all reading would do as well. But no, not RIVERA. She clearly read the email, has seen the bulletin board, yet weeks continue to pass, and she remains silent...Yvette, we know you read these, and we want you to know that WE KNOW you are behind this! And you want us to respect you when you lie and hide little mistakes like this? Now how can we respect you when you tell lie after lie, ask staff to spy on each other, and treat black staff SO differently than non-black staff?
