Nance: U.S. Troops Now 'Guaranteed' To Be Tortured in Captivity

Rep. Artur Davis (D-AL) asked during today's hearing whether even the impression that the U.S. tortures makes it more likely that an adversary in a future conflict -- he used the Iranians as an example -- would torture captured U.S. or allied troops.

Former Navy instructor Malcolm Nance said he considered it a "guarantee" that other nations now have "a legal standard to subject American soldiers to enhanced interrogations." U.S. Air Force Reserve Colonel Steve Kleinman said he "agree[s] entirely."

This is certain : the US government's justification of torture has already been picked up all over the world.

This administration has thown away our 'soft power' - the ability to use high ideals to persuade. That was too complicated for the people in charge now.

They like to threaten, to bomb, and to bribe.

The administration now finds itself at the limit of what bombing and threats to bomb can accomplish. They do not like what Iran and Pakistan are doing now - and they are unable to change it.

This is a compelling argument against torture that even logic-challenged foaming wingnuts should comprehend (as if we needed any reason other than the moral one). OUR TROOPS will now be vulnerable to the same barbaric practices we use on the terriss.

Why do Bush, Cheney, the Republiscums, and their enablers hate our troops?

I hoped to see his testimony, at least on CSPAN3.

Nope.

CSPAN's toothlessness is another symptom of our dying democracy.

I watched it from the HJC website feed. I'm sure they'll have it available for your viewing pleasure soon.

Kirk Anderson editorial cartoon on torture. There's another in MPLS. StarTrib today, but I can't find it in online edition.

Plus, the "terrorists" can embarrass the U.S. by not torturing "Crusaders".

Isn't it interesting that after all our wars and conflicts, it takes an administration which bases its existence and goals as God driven, to decide torture is acceptable practice....

And we are now, according to this same administration, at war with Moslem extremists, who blatently disregard God's word...

Let's not forget that with our new system of law any American citizen traveling outside of the country can be grabbed by a foreign government and use enhanced questioning. Then results can be sent to a secret court without a defence and punishment will be administered. American citizens should thank their government.

Thanks Steve for that info. Never thought to look at the hearing from the House site. I too was dissappointed it was not on cspan. I used to get 2 cspan channels, by the way. Time warner bought out Adelphia. Now I just get the House. Thank god for the web. Sorry if this is off topic. The issue is too despicable to address from here.

My emphasis. In future conflicts we have lost the moral and legal authority to press charges against mistreatment of our troops. Jesus! What does it take to be called a war criminal these days? If the former Cheerleader and his Gang of Thugs aren't War Criminals we are truly in a sad state of affairs. Its heartbreaking what these treacherous rat-bastards have done to the honor of this country.

Of course, Mushareff already used the old "Lincoln did it" excuse for detaining dissidents without charges, just like Bush and Cheney denying the Writ of Habeas Corpus for suspected terraists. Mushareff can also cite W. as authority for how swell it is to use enhanced interrogation techniques on those anti-government dissidents in Pakistan. We're a model for behavior all over the world! Doesn't your chest just swell with pride?

This is probably all part of the plan. Once Americans see proof that US soldiers have been tortured, who won't they be willing to go to war with? Bomb the shit out of? It's all part of the effort to dehumanize anyone in the Middle East whose race doesn't start with a J and end in a W.
