Feds Tapped Calls between Corrupt Exec and GOP Rep Young
Things get worse for Rep. Don Young (R-AK). The feds are chasing Young for his ties to the corrupt oil company Veco (among other things), and he's already blown $450,000 in campaign funds on criminal defense lawyers. But it looks like investigators pulled out all the stops.
FBI agents recorded former Veco president Rick Smith's phone calls with Young, the AP reports today. In September, the AP reported that Veco's CEO Bill Allen had recorded his calls with Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK).
Young was close to Smith in a couple ways. Smith, who pleaded guilty to bribing a number of lawmakers, arranged Young's annual mega-fundraiser pig roast (see picture above) at a cost of about $10,000 to $15,000 for a decade. But the feds are investigating whether there was another, shall we say, more informal arrangement, according to the AP:
The Justice Department is investigating whether an Alaska oil contractor used golf tournaments to funnel cash to Rep. Don Young, people close to the corruption investigation said.......[T]he events at the Moose Run Golf Course just outside Anchorage were informal and the prizes were cash. There is no record of them on the campaign or personal financial reports that federal lawmakers are required to file.
"That tournament had nothing to do with the campaign or anything official. It was just people getting together to play golf," said Young's campaign spokesman, Mike Anderson, who declined to discuss the tournaments or how often Young won.
So was Young unusually lucky? It's unclear. The piece doesn't say how much cash Young took away, only saying that between sixteen to twenty-four people generally played in the tournament, each paying $100 each. But for some reason people tend to get suspicious when executives hand large amounts of cash to politicians.

The word on the street is Don Young's wife Lu was also exceeding lucky at the Al Chaffee sponsored golf tournaments at Desert Canyon, winning expensive diamond jewelry two years in a row! And she didn't even have to look at her raffle ticket to win!! She was reportedly miffed however, when the two tennis bracelets were identical! Someone should have told Al that she needed a choker!!!

Don Young has a 35 year record of fighting and delivering for Alaskans.
Conspiracy theorists like "Anonymous" and his buddies at the ADN would like to reward his good work by painting pictures of impropriety, casting shadows of doubt, and trying to persuade the public that he's actually done something wrong.
Our Congressman has been proven guilty of NOTHING.
But Anonymous, the ADN, and others seeking to replace Congressman Young - and send a Freshmen Democrat to Congress who will end up being a lapdog for Nancy Pelosi) - know that the old phrase "innocent until proven guilty" applies in the court of law, but not necessarily in the court of public opinion.
I hope the Alaskans who read this and other unsubstaniated stories will recognize the transparency of these efforts.
After 35 years of service and results for Alaska, we owe Don Young the benefit of the doubt. If you disagree, move back to the Lower 48 from where I'm sure you came.
Alaska49th wrote on November 14, 2007 11:18 PM:So the man plays golf with some buddies and colleagues and they play for bragging rights and some cash? What's wrong with that? Just because he's a Congressman he has to give up his right to a life? If this were a crime, and it's not, than you would have to make room in prisons across this country for every person who's ever played a round of golf, a game of 1 on 1 or a tennis match where a friendly wager was placed. Give me a break.
Anonymous wrote on November 14, 2007 11:22 PM:can we get an IQ check on DY because i don't think you will find a less qualified or dumber person to send to Congress than DY
Could DY have lasted this long if Ted Stevens didn't deliver and create Alaska into the largest welfare state in the USA? corporate interest threw $ at DY and TS because they were easily electable in their state with simple messages of "goddamn outsiders" "enviromentalist". that creates sycophants who while "fighting for Alaskans" also give out jewelry to his wife and fly is white trash ass around the country so he can 'stand up' for Alaskans at some Hilton reception stuffing his face with corporate money
federal corruption breeds incompetence of the worst form -the career politician and sycophant hacks
HateLower48 wrote on November 15, 2007 12:16 AM:Thank you, Anonymous, for proving my point.
You're post reeks of everything I noted above, and you stink of Lower 48 liberal activisim. You're no Alaskan.
You toss around unfounded accusations in a hissy fit of rage that reminds me of a baby who hasn't had his bottle.
You throw out words like "corruption" and "sycophant", and hope folks will stop and listen to your rant.
I'm not sure where you come from Anonymous, but one thing is clear:
You are an angry individual with an agenda that's apparently focused on crucifying a man that's done nothing for the last 35 years but work and produce results for Alaska.
Consider the fact that Alaska has Don Young to thank for the Trans Alaska Pipeline - the foundation of the States economy - which he made a reality in his first year in Congress.
The list of things he's done for our new state in the 30 years since is too long to list here.
Anonymous, I'm tired of your unfounded, sensationalist defamation of my Congressman.
ALASKANS: IF YOU'RE READING, SEE THESE EFFORTS FOR WHAT THEY REALLY ARE.
WE OWE DON THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.

Lawmakers Pony Up for Legal Bills
Susan Davis reports on Congress.
Rep. Don Young, a senior Republican lawmaker from Alaska, spent $178,000 on legal bills in the third quarter of the year, according to disclosure reports filed Monday. Washington Wire has not reviewed all 465 reports from House members, but Young’s bill so far appears to be the highest paid by any member of the chamber.
Young is under federal investigation in a broad public corruption probe enveloping a number of prominent Alaskan officials, including Sen. Ted Stevens. The Wall Street Journal’s John Wilke reported on the probe earlier this year. Young’s latest payment brings his total legal bills for the year to $472,000, all paid out of his campaign account.

Delivering what, comedy relief?
He's an idiot. He's always been an embarrassment to the state. Whitekeys had it right.
Whether guilty or not, he's always been crooked, and it's high time we stopped celebrating that and acted like adults -- finding long-term solutions and plans to build the state's own potential instead of living on handouts like entitled children.
PalmerBuyer wrote on November 15, 2007 1:28 AM:Dear 'hate lower 48'
Your signature says it all. Please don't 'speak' for me and other concerned Alaskans who are proud to be US citizens and ALASKANS. When you defend Uncle Don with no regard for his actions by giving him credit for the PIPELINE! I wonder if you were actually HERE then. I WAS.
If you think Don's ONE vote in the House (in his first year) was important, you are correct, but he did NOT get the PIPELINE for Alaska. That was planned and worked on LONG before he was elected. I WAS THERE. (And don't forget him running against a dead man and losing before he became a congressman.)
Knee jerk reactions finding him NOT guilty are just as bad as those finding him guilty --- BUT too much information is coming to the fore that dear Don has yet to explain. Doing good things 'most' of the time does not absolve anyone of responsibility for their actions.
And his actions and arrogance have made the 'perception of evil' worse. See Pig Roast, picnic, golf tounaments, etc. (BTW, MOOSE RUN is on a military base. Someone needs to check regs to see if tournaments such as mentioned are a violation of DoD regulations.)
He works for ALASKANS and needs to step up and explain what is going on. Sorry, but no completely INNOCENT person needs to spend half a million dollars a year on legal fees and his 'in your face' reaction just makes it worse.
It is time for Don to retire. BUT HE OWES US an explanation. So does Uncle Ted. We trusted them to do what was right for US and to leave their pocketbooks out of the equation.
Remember: the appearance of evil is often worse than the actual evil.
Those who work for the public have a responsibility to make sure they don't abuse that trust. And as we've seen in recent Alaska events, some elected officials seem to think they are 'entitled' to certain items / preferences BECAUSE they are elected representatives of the people. They are WRONG.
Pt. Thompson wrote on November 15, 2007 1:35 AM:Don Young cannot in any way take credit for the TAPS. The guy's arrogance has outgrown his contribution. It's really easy to feel powerful when you're spending all of the taxpayers money. It's time for him to go. Wonder if Lu is willing to go back to charming old Ft. Yukon now. I doubt it.
HateLower48 wrote on November 15, 2007 1:53 AM:Good work, Anonymous. Post a wsj piece detailing exactly what it costs to defend yourself from daily, unfounded, round-the-clock accusations of wrongdoing.
While none of these accusations have any substance, that fact is, unfortunately, irrelevant.
Because when folks like Anonymous and the nation's multi-million dollar environmental fundraising machines see an opportunity to "connect the dots" and present an illusion of corruption, papers like the Anchorage Daily News are waiting anxiously to report their story as fact.
And before you know it, the illusion of wrongdoing created by Anonymous and Earth Justice is on the front page of the ADN and other "news" papers.
Then they regurgitate these stories, trying to invent some new imaginary angle in order to fancy the imagination of more and more unsuspecting individuals and radicals like Anonymous.
THIS IS THE REAL STORY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE FOLKS.
DON YOUNG -
A MAN WHO HAS SPENT MORE THAN HALF OF HIS LIFE WORKING AND PRODUCING RESULTS FOR THE PEOPLE OF ALASKA -
DESERVES OUR SUPPORT AND THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.
HateLower48 wrote on November 15, 2007 2:09 AM:Dear PalmerBuyer,
I was here. Where were you? TAPS never would have become a reality as quickly as it did, if ever, we're it not for DY advancing an amendment to the proposal that banned any litigation on construction of the pipeline.
Stevens then worked the idea in the Senate and it was agreed by both Chambers.
At the end of the day, it was a delegation effort.
But if "you were around" at the time you'd know that DY was integral to its success.
In fact, Don's Colleauges recognized this fact and named him "Freshmen Congressmen of the Year"
I hope you're not teaching HISTORY in Palmer.

I doubt PalmerBuyer is teaching history here - in Palmer. But he knows his stuff. The most recent guy who did a helluva a job teaching that at the college in Palmer is now Alaska's AG. People like Don are likely to keep Tallis's crew really, really busy for the next few years.
What a friggin' great idea - legislation to hold contractors harmless for negligence. That's our Don, eh?

Come clean Don, why are you blowing all your campaign funds on a criminal defense team? You forget, we are your employers, and we have an absolute right to know, (until you resign), your business is OUR business.
That little shack in Fort Yukon needs someone to live in it, looks like its been abandoned since you first got elected and moved back Esat.

PalmerBuyer wrote on November 15, 2007 9:06 PM:No, I don't teach History in Palmer -- but I COULD if I wanted to.
Back in the 'dark ages' I actually worked for the agency that OVERSAW the building of the TAPS. I was there when it was PLANNED and the standard joke was that the five story building next to Alyeska on Bragaw was to store the Environmental Impact Statements. There were a lot of people responsible for getting the pipeline built. Don was one of MANY.
I think the biggest change in life in Alaska is that the internet has made stories and news available to more people SOONER and more accurately. It is harder to HIDE.
(Right Don / Ted / Benny / Kott / Tom / Scott / etc.?)
We have come a long way from getting our 'news' via tape played the NEXT day -- if then (depended on the weather and the plane arriving). The 64 earthquake changed our world because technology arrived. It has not been the same since.
It has always been a 'small' state politically and socially. Everybody who has been here for awhile knows everyone. Seven degrees of separation is too many here. (One time my cousin got married and my boss became my uncle by marriage.)
Old joke: I'm been bulls**t by experts, and I resent it when am amateur tries. Bottom line: Don owes an explanation, the sooner the better. He works for US. I don't want more BS, I want the truth. It is SAD that only the FBI appears willing and able to give it to us.
Again, it doesn't matter what good you do, you are still responsible for your actions. It is time for Don to stand up and be a MAN.
